Building bridges on every block: Holland hosts second annual Good Neighbor Celebration

HOLLAND — Neighborhood organizations across Holland are gearing up to celebrate community spirit this autumn, inviting residents from every corner of the city to gather for the second annual Good Neighbor Celebration.

Timed to honor National Good Neighbor Day, the festival will take place 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the West of Washington Plaza, 1006 Washington Ave.

A festival of family, fun, and recognition

Designed as a family-friendly afternoon, the celebration will feature a wide lineup of festivities aimed at bringing residents together, including live music, games, prizes, a dunk tank, and complimentary haircuts.

The event will also feature free food and ice cream and a presentation of the "Neighbors of the Year" awards, highlighting standout individuals from several Holland neighborhoods for their outstanding contributions to local community life.

The event is spearheaded by a coalition of neighborhood groups, including 3Sixty, Heights of Hope, Washington School Neighbors, and Westcore Neighbors, with additional support from local churches and the City of Holland.

A tradition rooted in civic pride

National Good Neighbor Day was originally established by presidential proclamation under President Jimmy Carter in 1978, designated as a day to recognize the vital role that neighborhoods play in fostering connection and civic engagement.

Local leaders are continuing that legacy. Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks recently issued an official proclamation designating September as National Good Neighbor Month throughout the city. Bocks emphasized that strong, socially cohesive neighborhoods directly improve resident health, individual well-being, and overall civic pride.
