ERIE, Pa. — The Great Lakes are hoping for a historic tourism boom in 2026.

Regional officials announced this week that the 2026 cruising season is projected to generate a record-breaking $300 million in economic impact, marking a 25% increase over the previous year.

The forecast, unveiled by Cruise the Great Lakes at a press conference in Erie, Pennsylvania, suggests that the inland seas are becoming a premier destination for luxury and expedition travel.

The economic forecast said more than 23,000 passengers are expected to cruise the lakes this year, a 5% increase over 2025. More than 800 port visits are planned, which is nearly 15% higher than last year, and the total number of cruise passenger visits across the region is estimated at nearly 175,000, up nearly 15% from 2025.

The surge is driven by a combination of more frequent port calls, increased shoreside spending, and a growing market for premium freshwater itineraries, according to tourism leaders.
