OTTAWA COUNTY — Many readers gravitate toward independent bookstores over chain stores, drawn by collections curated with the local community in mind.

Independent bookstores are often seen by community members as cornerstones that foster learning, and this stands true for Ottawa County.

Many businesses utilize in-store gathering spaces to host “meet the author” events and provide programming for a variety of age ranges. In addition, some readers value keeping money in the local economy and seeing selections that have been curated for the community, including novels written by local authors.

Small, locally owned shops, dubbed independent bookstores, have seen an increase in popularity nationwide, often acting as cultural hubs for communities. Independent Bookstore Day on April 26 saw a record growth in online sales — a 77.4% increase compared to Independent Bookstore Day in 2024, according to the American Booksellers Association. Similarly, since 2020, the number of independent bookstores in the U.S. has seen a 70% increase.

Readers flock to bookstores for a variety of reasons, ranging from picking up new releases, selling used, well-read novels in an effort to clear off shelves and collecting antiquated literature that can be hard to come across. No two bookstores are the same, as shops specialize in unique niches that serve sectors of the community.

Here are some shops in Ottawa County selling new, used and antique books:

Book Cellar: Housed in a colorfully painted building, Grand Haven’s Book Cellar offers new and gently used books in a variety of genres, including comics, rare books and autographed copies. The eclectic shop at 8 N. Seventh St. hosts acclaimed authors throughout the year, and accepts books on consignment, with sellers receiving 33% of the sale price in store credit.

Vanessa’s Bookstore: Vanessa’s Bookstore in Grand Haven showcases itself as a family-friendly shop selling new and used literature. Located at 1003-A South Beacon Blvd., the store highlights Michigan authors on its shelves and provides a selection of children’s novels and picture books. Accepting consignments, Vanessa’s Bookstore pledges to beat “valid, online cash offers” for used titles brought in by sellers.

The Bookman: The Bookman is a book, toy and gift store located in Grand Haven that routinely hosts reading groups in its space. Selling mostly new and some used items, the shop at 715 Washington Ave. provides a discount pricing schedule for teachers, active or retired military personnel, book clubs and large orders when wholesale prices allow. The Bookman offers Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon book clubs that take place monthly for community members looking to discuss their reads with others.

Espresso Books & Beans: This family-owned business specializes in new and signed books, alongside a coffee bar offering a variety of drink options. The shop opened its doors in April 2025 to booklovers and coffee drinkers alike. For customers looking to try a literary-themed latte, Espresso Books & Beans sells drinks inspired by classic tales, such as “The Great Gatsby” and “Frankenstein.” The shop is located at 3006 West Shore Drive in Holland.

Bluestocking Bookshop: Bluestocking Bookshop offers a diverse, community-oriented selection at 12330 James St. in Holland. Selling new and used books, the business partners regularly with community organizations, including Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates and Out On The Lakeshore, to further work related to inclusivity and equity. Bluestocking Bookshop also has an event space that can be utilized by book clubs and hobby groups.

Reader’s World Bookstore: The family-owned Reader’s World Bookstore has been in business since 1967 in downtown Holland. The shop’s collection includes books, newspapers, magazines, puzzles and other literary and stationery items. Reader’s World, located at 194 S. River Ave., prices current New York Times bestsellers 20% off and welcomes special orders from customers.

Reformed Book Outlet: This nonprofit bookstore opened in Hudsonville in 1985 as an evangelistic outreach of Hudsonville Protestant Reformed Church. The small shop at 3472 Harvey St. supplies teaching aids, music, Bibles, religious commentary and study material, among other works. Any profits collected are used to produce and stock additional inventory. The store hosts regular storytime sessions and crafting events.
