GRAND HAVEN — Gracious Grounds broke ground Thursday on Ability Way, a new 77-unit, 67,167-square-foot affordable housing community that will expand independent living opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities in Grand Haven.

When completed in early 2027, Ability Way will increase Gracious Grounds’ capacity from 50 to 86 residents, furthering its commitment to creating communities where adults can experience supported independence, continue building the skills needed for daily life, and live with dignity.

Ability Way is financed through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and through the investment of tax credit equity and construction financing by Independent Bank, which serves as a financial partner and co-owner in the project.

The financing supports construction only, the organization said, as it relies on community support to sustain its model of resident assistants living on-site.

“Ability Way reflects our belief that adults with intellectual disabilities deserve access to affordable housing where they can continue to grow, strengthen their independence, and be part of a supportive community,” said Matt Lehr, executive director of Gracious Grounds. “We are deeply grateful for Independent Bank’s partnership in making construction possible and for Reenders Inc., whose leadership in the building process has been pivotal in bringing Ability Way to life.”

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at 16941 Ability Way.

Construction is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2027.

Gracious Grounds is a nonprofit housing community that supports successful independent living for adults with intellectual disabilities. For more information, visit graciousgrounds.org or email hello@graciousgrounds.org.
