ALLENDALE — Grand Valley State University is extending a crucial lifeline to students from fellow Michigan college Siena Heights University.

With Siena Heights set to close its doors, GVSU is offering guaranteed admission and scholarship opportunities, aiming to ensure a seamless academic transition for those facing an unexpected disruption to their education. Sienna is located on Michigan's southeast side in Adrian.

The decision by Siena Heights, a 105-year-old Catholic institution, to cease operations after the 2025-26 academic year was announced June 30. The move impacts approximately 1,855 enrolled students, creating an urgent need for clear pathways to continue their studies. The decision to close its doors came down to several factors, mainly financial, according to a statement on its website.

“Senior leadership has assessed the financial situation, operational challenges and long-term sustainability. Despite the dedication of our board, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters, continuing operations beyond the coming academic year is no longer feasible,” the statement reads.

Grand Valley's immediate response seeks to address the students’ placement head-on.

In a statement from B. Donta Truss, Grand Valley's vice president for Enrollment Development and Educational Outreach, it’s clear the university is there to help.

"We understand the uncertainty and disruption this unfortunate situation creates for Siena Heights students," the vice president said. "We want to assure them that their educational goals can remain within reach. Grand Valley is ready to help them continue their journey."

Comprehensive support for transition

GVSU has developed a multi-faceted approach to support transferring Siena Heights students. Beyond guaranteeing admission for those in good academic standing, the university has extended the deadline for its transfer merit scholarships to Aug. 22, providing valuable extra time for applicants to secure financial assistance, according to the university’s website.
