New trail connection expands outdoor access along the Macatawa River Greenway
Outdoor enthusiasts in Ottawa County have a new way to explore the Macatawa River Greenway following the completion of the 2.1-mile Middle Macatawa Connector and major infrastructure improvements at Hawthorn Park.
HOLLAND TWP. — Outdoor enthusiasts in Ottawa County have a new way to explore the Macatawa River Greenway following the completion of the 2.1-mile Middle Macatawa Connector and major infrastructure improvements at Hawthorn Park.
The newly completed natural surface trail creates a continuous route between Hawthorn Park — formerly Hawthorn Pond Natural Area — and the Upper Macatawa Natural Area. Designed for hikers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers, the pathway features boardwalks and a newly constructed bridge spanning the Macatawa River.
Alongside the trail launch, partners unveiled several upgrades at Hawthorn Park, which is jointly owned by Holland Charter Township and Ottawa County Parks. Improvements include expanded parking, enhanced security, and a modern restroom facility.
The project marks the culmination of a multi-year, multi-agency initiative aimed at securing land along the corridor, restoring wetlands and floodplains, and expanding public access.
"The Macatawa Greenway is an excellent example of what can be accomplished through strong partnerships," said Ottawa County Parks Director Jason Shamblin. "Together, we're improving access to the outdoors while helping protect the natural resources that make this corridor so special."

Land for the connector spans property owned by Holland Charter Township, Ottawa County Parks, and the ODC Network. Funding and resources were pooled from all three entities, leveraging additional support from Zeeland Charter Township, Ottawa County, and the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.
The broader Macatawa River Greenway extends from Lake Michigan through the Holland and Zeeland areas, tracking the Lake Macatawa and Macatawa River watershed. To date, regional state, county, municipal, and nonprofit partners have permanently protected and connected more than 1,500 acres of public land.
"The Macatawa River Greenway is creating a legacy that will benefit our community for generations," said Dan Callam of the ODC Network. "It's preserving the landscapes that make this region unique while ensuring future generations have the opportunity to explore, learn, and build lasting connections with nature."
