Judith Ann Barde

January 31, 1943-July 25, 2026

Judith Ann "Judy" Barde passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved and cared for so deeply throughout her life.

Judy was born and raised in Pittsburg, Kansas, where she met the love of her life, Alex Barde. They began their married life together in Heidelberg, Germany, where their first two children, Dimitre and Lisa, were born. Two years later, they returned to Kansas, where their third child, Ethan, was born. Together they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. In 2019, Judy and Alex moved to Douglas, Michigan, to be closer to their family.

While raising her children, Judy was a nurse's aide and later returned to school to become a registered nurse. Her career spanned emergency rooms, obstetrics, and work as a travel nurse. Caring for others was not simply her profession. It was an essential part of who she was.

Judy was an artist, a lifelong adventurer, and a devoted caretaker who approached life with imagination, courage, and ingenuity. When Judy set her mind to something, she usually found a way to make it happen. She was a gifted photographer, a relentless problem solver, and delighted in bringing new life to old treasures. Whether she was creating handmade gifts or finding new uses for forgotten things, Judy had a remarkable gift for making ordinary moments feel extraordinary. She handcrafted scrapbooks, refurbished an Airstream trailer, and partnered with Alex in transforming a former railroad engine house into the innovative passive solar home where they built the next chapter of their family's life.

When Alex accepted a one-year sabbatical in Puebla, Mexico, Judy eagerly embraced the adventure. The family made the journey by car, creating memories they would cherish for the rest of their lives.

Judy loved travel, camping, sailing, and cycling. She participated in Bike Across Kansas several times and always maintained a sense of wonder, once dreaming of hopping aboard a freight train just to see where it might lead.

Together, Judy and Alex built a life filled with creativity, curiosity, and adventure. Their talents complemented one another beautifully, inspiring all three of their children to remain curious and find beauty in everyday life. Judy often reminded them that it wasn't the type of camera that mattered, but how you used it.

She had an ability to make each person feel as though they were the most important and special person in the room. Whether you were one of her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or a friend, Judy made you feel deeply loved. She was the heart of her family.

If there was a way to make life more beautiful, more creative, or more memorable for the people she loved, Judy would find a way.

Judy is lovingly remembered by her husband, Alex Barde; her children, Dimitre (Rachel Green) Barde, Lisa (Dave) Strohauer, Ethan (Tammy Kerr) Barde, and Shala Larsen, a cherished member of the family; her grandchildren, Ellie Barde, Sam Larsen, Alec Kerr, Zac Kerr, and Luke Barde; her sister, Vickie (Kenny) Waltrip; her nieces and nephews, Jason (Michelle) Waltrip, Stephanie (PJ) Forbes, Emily (Justin) Hamilton, Brad Waltrip, and Katie (Justin) Swezey; her brother and sister in law, Billy (Diane) Bardy; her nephews, Brad (Linda Knight) Bardy and Troy (Kate) Bardy; and a joyful crowd of great-nieces and great-nephews, far too numerous to name individually but each very much a part of the family she loved.

She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Sterling Strohauer; her parents, Edwin Albert "Ed" Herbeck and Ann Herbeck; her brother-in-law, Peter Bardy; her sister-in-law, Helen Bardy; and her parents-in-law, Dimitris Naum "Peti" Barde and Sena Barde.

A celebration of Judy's life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been made.

Vivian Ann Blease

July 25, 1929-August 2, 2026

Vivian Ann Blease, age 97, of Grand Haven, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at home.

She was born on July 25, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, to Walter and Helen (Pranger) Wlodar. Vivian married Donald A. Blease on May 30, 1947, in Grand Haven, Michigan. Donald preceded her in death on February 9, 1991.

Vivian was a longtime member of St. Patrick Parish, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2326 Auxiliary, and a member of the Council on Aging at the Senior Resource Center. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, and being outdoors. Vivian was a marvelous cook and baker, notable for her Chinese food. She enjoyed traveling, particularly to the casino for the slot machines. She was one heck of a card shark, especially at cribbage, pinochle, and euchre.  Most of all, she loved her family and spending time with them.

She is remembered by her nieces, Diane Muzyczuk (James, deceased) and Beverly Wlodar; nephew, Kenneth Kamps (Cherrylyn); three grandchildren, Shawn Blease, Donna (Don) Sokolow, and Brandi (Josh) Jackman; four great-grandchildren, Elliona and Lev Sokolow, Kyli and Bo Jackman. 

Vivian was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra “Sandy” Blease, in 1961; son, Lenard Blease in 1995; sister, Sylvia Kamps in 1996; brother, Melvin Wlodar and nephew, Larry Wlodar.

Wayne Alan Brower

December 7, 1953-August 3, 2026

Wayne Alan Brower, age 72, passed away at home on Monday, August 3, 2026.

Wayne was an incredible husband, father, friend, and one of the kindest souls. He poured his entire heart into his family, and anyone who knew him saw that in the way he lived every single day. His smile would light up the room, and his life was a beautiful example of unconditional love, selflessness, and faithfulness. The legacy he left behind will be seen in generations to come.

He was an active outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing in particular. He was a gentle man with a sly sense of humor. To know him was to love him.

We couldn't be more thankful that God chose him to be in our lives. The pain of losing him is indescribable, but we find peace knowing he is no longer hurting. We know he was welcomed into Heaven with open arms by Jesus, and by other family members, as well as so many loved ones who went before him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gillis and Ida Brower; and his sister, Sandy Martin.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Brower; children, Steve and Jennifer Hamlin, Morgan and Gary Hamrick, Brette and Tyler Thomas, Jordan and Ashley Brower; grandchildren, Destin Hamrick, Colin Hamlin, Aiden Hamlin, Avy Hamrick, Conner Hocking, Sevastian Brower, Rhys Brower, Riley Thomas, Uriah Hamrick, Evelyn Hamrick, Penelope Hamrick, Peyton Hamrick, Briliey Hamrick, Candrah Hamrick, Corbin Hamrick, Hayleigh Hamrick; siblings, Diane and Bob Velthouse, Dave and Rhonda Brower, Kathy and Jim McFarland, Karen and Mark VanSlooten; brothers-in-law, Louis and Mary DeRosia, Mike Cornell; and many extended family members.

Barbara Ann Davies

June 22, 1934-August 1, 2026

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Davies, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, and friend, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the age of 92.

She left this world peacefully after a life filled with kindness, faith, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Born in Grand Haven, Michigan, on June 22, 1934, to Dorothy and Herman Kruizenga, Barbara spent her childhood in Muskegon. As an only child, she grew up in a close-knit family, spending weekends with grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles in Spring Lake. Barbara’s love of others, compassion and social engagement shaped every chapter of her life.

While attending Muskegon Heights High School, she met James Henry Davies, whom she married in August of 1957, following her graduation from Hope College and his from the University of Michigan. They continued visiting Ann Arbor to cheer on their favorite team, the Michigan Wolverines, for decades. Barbara and Jim began their family in Muskegon, moving briefly to Utica on the Eastside of the state. They returned to the Westside, settling in Grand Rapids where they lived in their home for 48 years. Together they built a home filled with faith, service to others, social gatherings, and a love of sports.

Barbara was known for her generous heart, her ability to listen without judgment (although she loved to talk), and her gift for making everyone feel valued. This was evident over her career as a teacher and paraprofessional in various special education classrooms, volunteering in the church, or sharing life over a cup of coffee with numerous circles of friends and neighbors. She touched countless lives with her gentle wisdom and open heart.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 68 years, James; her sister-in-law and dear friend, Virginia Raby; her daughter, Allyson and John Fris; granddaughter, Elizabeth and Taylor Otteman; grandson, Jacob Fris; great-granddaughter, Marguerite Otteman, and close friends, the VanderWoude family.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Herman Kruizenga, son Kurt Davies, and numerous cousins with whom she remained close. Her legacy of love, resilience, and grace will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 10, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1100 Lake Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506, with friends and family invited to share memories and honor her remarkable journey. A visitation and light lunch will follow the service

Gary Lee Dempsey

Gary Lee Dempsey, age 85, passed away at home while surrounded by his family on Monday, August 3, 2026.

Gary is preceded in death by his spouse, Bonnie Dempsey; parents, John and Thelma Dempsey; daughter, Elaine Dempsey; grandparents, John and Orphan Dempsey and Ernest and Myrtle Price.

He is survived by his children, Jeff (Betty) Dempsey, Terri (Lloyd) Herbstreith; grandchildren, Tyler Herbstreith, Chad Smith, Jana (Gus) McClellan; great-grandchildren, Brayden McClellan, Mckena McClellan, Cade McClellan, Brynleigh McClellan, Keegan McClellan, Toby Smith, Gabriel Smith; sister, Judy Hopkins; niece, Tiffany Hopkins; nephew, John Hopkins; and many extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 22 years, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After retiring from the military, he went on to serve his community by working for the Postal Service for 20 years. Gary had a kind and charitable heart, often blessing complete strangers with a gift or helping someone in need. Most importantly, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

A funeral service celebrating Gary’s life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418, with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

Gary will be laid to rest at Georgetown Cemetery with full military honors. Gloria Jean (Parsons) Elenbaas

August 17, 1951-August 2, 2026

Gloria Jean Elenbaas, age 74, of Grand Haven, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Corewell Health Grand Rapids-Butterworth Hospital.

She was born on August 17, 1951, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to the late Wesley and Beverly (Braheny) Parsons.

Gloria graduated from Grand Haven High School, Class of 1969. She then completed her medical assistant schooling and worked as a medical assistant at the urgent care center in Grand Haven. She was also a loving caregiver in many capacities for many people over the years.

Gloria lived in Tennessee for a time, where she loved her church. She always attended her kids' and grandkids' events and sports games, and she loved spending time with her friends. Gloria was an avid reader who most enjoyed relaxing with a good book.

Gloria will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter, Renee (Korey) Kemp; her son, Brian (Becky) Elenbaas; seven well-loved grandchildren, Emily, Gage (Mia), Devin (Marisa), Michael, Lance, Tristan, and Hayley; and her brother, Gordon (Victoria) Parsons Sr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, Roger; and her two sisters, Cindy Veihl and Vicki Purdy.

Timothy "Tim" Dean Ensign

August 22, 1951-July 29, 2026

Timothy "Tim" Dean Ensign, age 74, of Grand Haven, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Holland Hospital after a courageous battle with service-connected throat cancer.

He was born on August 22, 1951, in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late Wilbur and Betty (Allen) Ensign.

Tim shared two important chapters in his life through marriage. He first married Leslie Graves, and together they welcomed two daughters, Megan and Lindsay. He later married Maribeth Stankich, and together they welcomed two sons, Timothy and David. Tim's family grew in different seasons of his life, and each of his children and grandchildren held a special place in his heart.

A proud veteran, Tim honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His military service remained an important part of who he was, and the service-connected illness he faced later in life reflected the sacrifices he made for his country.

Tim was a skilled mason whose craftsmanship reflected the pride he took in a job well done. He enjoyed camping, spending time outdoors, reading, collecting clocks, and preparing meals for family and friends. He appreciated life's simple pleasures and found happiness in sharing them with others.

One of Tim's greatest gifts was his imagination. His children will forever remember the funny, imaginative stories he created, spinning tales that made them laugh, wonder, and eagerly wait to hear what happened next. Those stories became treasured family memories and were one of the many ways he expressed his love. His grandchildren were fortunate to experience that same playful spirit.

Those who knew Tim will remember his resilience, his quiet strength, and his willingness to lend a hand. He faced life's challenges with determination and left behind a lifetime of memories that will continue to be shared through the stories, laughter, and traditions of those who loved him.

Tim is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Megan (Aaron) Boos and Lindsay (Andy) White; his sons, Timothy and David Ensign; his grandchildren, Andrew, Ethan, and Anna Boos; his brother, David (Tanja) Ensign; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Betty Ensign; his wife, Maribeth Stankich; his daughter, Alicia Ensign; and his brothers, Robert, Russell, and William Ensign.

David Keith Hasty

David Keith Hasty, age 74, passed away in Muskegon, Michigan, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, following a hard-fought six-month battle with cancer.

David was born in Grand Haven, Michigan, on July 9, 1952, to Wayne and Doris (Bulson) Hasty. David actively served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, something that he was deeply proud of.

David was a quiet, gentle man who was well-liked by all who knew him. He welcomed people with an easy warmth and a smile that everyone loved, forming his own genuine friendships with visiting friends and family who deeply respected his company. He lived his life with contentment and routine — starting his days with a hot cup of coffee, staying active with a daily workout, and taking pride in keeping up with his daily household routines. He was a man of simple pleasures who filled his days with music, strumming his guitar, and enjoying the foods he loved best — from a good perch dinner or a warm bowl of soup to simple canned goods and his favorite desserts.

Always willing to give back, he quietly supported charities and helped others whenever he could. David had a unique perspective that allowed him to find deep value in the simple, everyday details of life that others often overlook or take for granted. One of his greatest joys was being able to live with his grandchildren for many years, taking great pride in the opportunity to help raise them as much as he did. David truly exemplified the truth that "Love is patient, love is kind ... it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

David will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Brian (Gretchen) Hasty, Daniel (Mara) Hasty, Julia (Thomas Potter) Hasty, and Heather Duga; 13 grandchildren, Brandon, Evelyn, Elliot, Maizylin, Gia, Kaia, Maverik, Jennifer (Jarrett), Peyton, Kaleb, Dustin, Xavier, and Kathleen; four great-grandchildren, with one on the way; sister, Laura Bliss; niece and nephews, Jennifer Hasty, Jeremy Hasty, and Kenneth Bliss; Linda Calkins (the mother of his children); and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Doris Hasty, and two brothers, Gordon and Wayne Hasty.

David will be buried at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, 15501 W Dickman Road, Augusta, MI 49012.

A graveside service with military honors will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026. Jean Heyboer, age 90, of Zeeland passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

She is survived by her husband, Junior Heyboer, of 70 years; her children, Dawn Werkman, Laurie and Robert Hieftje, Larry and Kristi Heyboer, Sheila and Jack Cavanaugh; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sarah and Dan Ouwenga, Ben and Kelli Werkman, Jenna Werkman, Matthew and Andrea Werkman, Nicole Hieftje, Chris and Haleigh Hieftje (Adelyn and Hudson), Brittany and John VanByssum (Eleanor, Lucy, Frances and Charlotte), Philip and Brittany Heyboer (Howard and AvaLynn), Lisa and Christopher Rumsey (Nolan and Nora), Michael Heyboer, Josiah and Erin Samy (Peyton, Bennett and Pierce), Anisha and Nick Kasper (Jade); brother, Gerald and Nancy Hoekstra, and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Andy Hoekstra, Keith and Isla VanNoord, Marcia Zeerip.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Anna Hoekstra, and her siblings, AnnaMae and Harold DeYoung, Jay and Marcia Hoekstra, Millie Hoekstra, Shirley Veltema and Laverne Heyboer.

Jean was born on May 20, 1936, in McBain, Michigan. She attended Hudsonville Christian School, Hudsonville High School, and Reformed Bible College.

Jean’s greatest pride and joy was her family, and she treasured every moment with them. Jean also took great delight in teaching others about the Lord. She was very active in her church as a youth leader and Sunday school teacher for many years at Vriesland Reformed and Drenthe Christian Reformed Church. She visited and taught Bible study to residents of the jail for many years and loved leading other Bible studies throughout her life.

Jean’s warm and engaging personality made her many wonderful friends wherever she went. One of Jean's favorite places was Golf Lakes Estate in Bradenton, Florida, where she and Junior spent 30 happy winters. She loved to emcee and perform with her friends in programs at Golf Lakes. Jean had a talent for oration and often could be found memorizing and reciting poems for family and friends. She continued her passions at Royal Park Place and Quincy Place, easily making friends with staff and residents along the way.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland. The funeral service to honor the life of Jean will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2026, in the chapel at Central Wesleyan Church, 446 W. 40th St., Holland.

Interment will be in Zutphen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the missionary work of Lynn Gann or Jim Lokers c/o Central Wesleyan Church.

Cherie Leone Huyser

November 11, 1951-July 22, 2026

Cherie Huyser, age 74, went to be with her Lord and savior on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Helen Susewitz.

She is survived by her son, Brian (Stephanie) Clelland; daughter, Tammi Osterink; brothers, David (Kathy) Susewitz and Dennis (Linda) Susewitz; grandchildren, Chase Osterink, Zachary Clelland, Kasey Osterink, Madison (Austin) Smith; great-grandson, Hudson Smith; and many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

Cherie loved her family and friends unconditionally. She expressed her love through her passion for baking and cooking, always happy to prepare a favorite meal or special treat, even if it wasn’t something she enjoyed herself. Whether it was a yearly birthday treat or a comforting bowl of spaghetti, she did it without hesitation. Her love of flowers was just as remarkable. Cherie always had a special gift for keeping any flower alive and thriving, no matter the conditions, often leaving others wondering how she did it.

Cherie’s greatest joy, however, was making cherished memories with her friends, family, grandchildren, and great-grandson, creating moments that will be treasured by those who knew and loved her.

Harold Nelson Koning

November 13, 1942-July 31, 2026

Jesus welcomed Harold Nelson Koning (born November 13, 1942) into his arms and into his heavenly home with God on Friday evening, July 31, 2026.

He is cherished and missed by his wife, Jeanne (Piersma) Koning, Tim and Kim (Coghlan) Koning, and Joy (Koning) and Geoff Reynolds. He will be remembered with love by his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katherine, Adam, Karen, Peter, Daniel, Ellen, Silas, Lewis, Nathan, and Jason.

Harold was a loving husband, a tenderhearted father, and an active, engaged grandfather. During his life, Harold was also a teacher, businessman, mentor, executive director of a rescue mission, board member, foster parent, tutor, Bible club teacher, church elder, and volunteer. He lived in communion with God. He encouraged everyone he met. He inspired those who knew him to follow Jesus Christ.

A memorial service for Harold will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland, MI 49423. A private graveside service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery in Grand Rapids.

Sidney "Sid" J. Kuizema, age 82, formerly of Grand Haven, peacefully passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at home in North Fort Myers, Florida.

He was born July 12, 1943, in Prairie City, Iowa, to the late Rev. Harmon and Regina (Tiddens) Kuizema. He married Beverly Kuizema on April 30, 1994, and she preceded him in death on December 15, 2018, after 24 years of marriage.

Most of Sid's career was spent in banking and real estate in West Michigan, and he invested his time in several civic organizations in the area. When out and about, it often seemed like he knew most of the population of Grand Haven and Spring Lake. Following retirement, he and Bev moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2005.

Sid's hobbies included anything with a motor that could go fast. He loved muscle cars, from his new 1962 Chevy until the day he died with his Corvette in the driveway. Few could rival his driving skill and finesse. For many years, Sid would be on a lake in a power boat with the family nearly every summer weekend.

In later years, he became an expert pilot of remote-control airplanes, maneuvering over the airfield with loops, rolls, hammerheads and knife edges. Over and above his love of speed and thrills, Sid was a considerate, caring man with a dry sense of humor who made everyone feel welcome.

Sid is survived by his companion, Marsha Schmidt; sons, Lawrence (Suzanne) Kuizema and Scott (Renee) Kuizema; grandchildren, Riley Kuizema and Emerson Kuizema; and first wife, Noreen (Fred) Karasinski.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; and daughter-in-law, Leslie Kuizema.

The graveside service for Sid will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Lake Forest Cemetery, with Pastor John Kenny officiating. Please join the family for visitation and reception at noon at Klaassen Family Funeral Home immediately following the graveside service.

Dr. Jean Shafer McCabe, age 86, of Grand Haven, Michigan, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2026.
 
She was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Blynn and Juanita Shafer. She spent most of her early years in Washington, D.C., and later made her home in Grand Haven, a community she cherished deeply.
 
Jean often said she never met a child she didn’t like and devoted her career to education. She earned both her undergraduate and master’s degrees from The Ohio State University, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Connecticut. She taught for several years and served most of her career in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools, including developing and teaching a pilot program, Open Classroom. In 1973, she became principal of Central School and later Mary A. White Elementary School. She was also involved in the curriculum department of Grand Haven Area Public Schools.
 
Jean and her spouse, Lynne Deur, loved to travel and explore. They visited over 35 countries by boat, plane, and train. When they weren’t traveling or spending time in their Colorado home, they could be found at the beach in North Shore.
 
Jean is survived by her children, Kelly Smart of Bradenton, Florida, Shawn (Kathryn) McCabe of Spring Lake, Matt (Susan) McCabe of Denver, Colorado, Ryan (Lynette) McCabe of Largo, Florida, and Katie (David) Wilson of Pittstown, New Jersey; grandchildren, Lindsey, Adam (Kaelen) and Nicholas Smart, Sarah and Madeline (Matt) McCabe, Conor, Grant, and Megan (Nick) Cunningham, William, Esmeralda, Lyn, and Ecaterina McCabe, Benjamin, Annie, and Maya Wilson; great-grandchildren, MaryMcCabe and Louise Cunningham; and sister-in-law, Lou Ann Shafer of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jean is also survived by her spouse, Lynne Deur, of Spring Lake; stepchildren Vincent (Tracey) Deur of Spring Lake and Sara Deur (Richard Garrett) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and six step-grandchildren. Jean’s parents, her brother, Dale Shafer, and son-in-law, Chris Warber, preceded her in death.
 
A memorial gathering for Jean will be 3-5 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417 (616-842-6100), with a celebration of Jean’s amazing life to be held in the near future.

Timothy James McClure

January 17, 1959-July 30, 2026

Timothy J. (TJ) McClure, 67, of Hamilton, Michigan, passed peacefully in his sleep on July 30, 2026, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on January 17, 1959, to James and Mary Ella (Zahl) McClure. TJ attended Ashtabula St. John (1977) and the University of Toledo.

TJ lived life to the fullest and never hesitated to "go for it." His greatest joy was his family, especially his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. TJ loved exploring wilderness areas with his wife Sandy. They would frequently find themselves off the beaten path or in small town wineries or breweries, as they loved to sample craft beers and local wines.

An avid outdoorsman, TJ was happiest spending time outdoors and sharing his knowledge with those he loved. Some of his favorite times were spent driving two-track trails through the woods with family and friends, on "TJ Adventures."

He had a deep passion and dedication for the pharmacy industry, where he started at age 15 and worked for 52 years until he retired on February 1, 2026. He wore many pharmacy hats over the years, but his favorite and final was using his vast knowledge to teach and mentor others about opening and running a pharmacy.

He leaves behind a legacy of passion and adventure and a family he will watch over for years to come.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mary Ella McClure, and his brother, Denny McClure; in-laws, Deloy and Mary Appel, and brother-in-law, Ed Appel.

TJ is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sandy (Appel) McClure; children, Jessica (Nick) Van Dyke of Hudsonville, Michigan, Travis (Jaema) McClure of Zionsville, Indiana; his three cherished grandchildren, Max, Gracie, and Emma Van Dyke; brothers, Mark (Anna), Kevin (Terry), Gary (Kate), Greg (Wendy), Chris (Michelle), and sister in-law, Debbie; brother in-law, Kevin (Julie) Appel and many nieces and nephews.

Cheryl Diane (Schmidt) Moreno

Cheryl Diane Moreno, age 81, of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at American House, Spring Lake.

She was born on November 1, 1944, in Elgin, Illinois, to the late Leonard and Alice (Neilsen) Schmidt.

Cheryl graduated from high school and then received her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. She spent her career working in hospitals as the director of medical records until her retirement.

Cheryl will be lovingly remembered and missed by her son, Neil (Heather) Moreno; her four grandchildren, Alyssa (Treavor) Neiman, Ryan, Evan, and Raymond Moreno; and her brother, Allen Schmidt.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Larry Schmidt.

John Fredrick Naser

July 12, 1939-July 31, 2026

John Fredrick Naser, age 87, of Grand Haven, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Grand Pines Assisted Living Center.

He was born on July 12, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late Harold and Katherine (Patterson) Naser. John married Sharon Burmeister on June 22, 1963.

John graduated from Tecumseh High School and went on to attend Albion College and the University of Michigan, where he earned his bachelor's degree in engineering.

John had a deep interest in local politics and was dedicated to serving his community in many capacities. He served nine years on the Grand Haven City Council, 12 years on the Grand Haven Board of Light and Power, and three years with the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. He also was involved with the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority Recruitment and Retention Committee and proudly served as president of the Jaycees for six years.

John and Sharon attended First Presbyterian Church and Christ Community Church, where he served as an elder at both churches. In his free time, John enjoyed watching University of Michigan football and basketball games, caring for his lawn, working on home projects, playing golf, and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

John is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sharon Naser; his four children, Jeffrey (Lori) Naser, Rebecca Naser (Bruce Grindy), Missy Naser (Drew Martin), and Jennifer Naser; and two grandchildren, James and Lydia Naser.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas Naser.

The memorial service for John will take place at a later date to be announced. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.

Mark Joseph O'Donnell

Mark J. O’Donnell, 73, of Holland, Michigan, died August 4, 2026.

Mark was born in Syracuse, New York, and attended Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York.

He graduated from LeMoyne College with a B.S. in Economics and from Cornell University with an MBA in Hospital Administration. In 2005, he obtained a master's in education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids.

Mark had a successful career in health care consulting before embarking on a second career teaching college mathematics.

His varied interests ranged from a love of Gilbert and Sullivan and Community Theater to the Chicago Cubs. He trained for and participated in many triathlons.

Mark was predeceased in death by his father, Bernard T., and his mother, Jane A.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Tait; sisters, Molly (Mike McGahan, deceased) and Katie; his brother, Tim (Kitty); and wonderful nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 480 152nd Ave., Holland, MI 49424, with an hour’s visitation before the service. Father Michael Burt will preside.

Roger Dale Olson

Roger Dale Olson, age 76, of Wyoming, Michigan, passed away on July 30, 2026.

Born on March 24, 1950, in Cadillac, Michigan, Roger lived a life defined by dedication, immense humor, and love for his family and friends.

Raised in Wyoming, Roger carried with him a deep appreciation for his Michigan roots throughout his life as a proud Wolverine, Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions fan. His favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting, and golf. He proudly owned and operated Olson Construction and many of his pole barns are scattered across West Michigan. He could always be seen with his signature mustache, aviator sunglasses, shorts, and a T-shirt sporting one of his favorite sports team logos.

Above all else, Roger placed his faith in God. He found strength, hope, and comfort in his relationship with the Lord, and that faith guided him through both life's joys and its challenges. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, welcomed into the loving arms of his Savior, and reunited with those who went before him.

Roger was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, sharing stories, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

He is survived by his incredible wife, Marcia; son, Daniel Olson; daughter, Kimberly (Matthew) Haik; daughter-in-law, Wendy Olson; sisters, Carol (Bob) DeWitt and Tammy (Scott) Bravata; brothers, Rocky (Kate) Olson and Richard (Holly) Marshall; sister-in-law, Marion Olson; grandchildren, Justine Olson, Kennedie (Noah) Reynolds, Madison (George Agon) Olson, Jaylan (Eury) Gonzalez, Hayden (McKenna Bennett) Olson, Ella Haik, Baleigh Olson, Stacy (Marcus) Martinez; and his five great-grandsons, Charles and Louis Agon, Adrian and Alex Gonzalez, Augustin Reynolds, and another great-grandchild on the way; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Olson; father, Albert Olson; mother, Alice Olson; stepmother, June Olson; and brother, Rick Olson.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in knowing that Roger is at peace and no longer in pain. His unwavering faith assures us that this is not goodbye, but until we meet again. His spirit will remain in our hearts forever.

Larry Petroelje

February 18, 1944-August 3, 2026

Larry Jay Petroelje, 82, of Holland, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 3, 2026.

Larry was born in Zeeland, Michigan, to Peter and Geraldine Petroelje. He graduated from Zeeland High School and continued his education at Michigan State University and Davenport College. Larry honorably served in the United States Army and is a Vietnam veteran. While on leave from the Army, he met his loving wife, Betty Kapenga. They were married on June 19, 1970, and were married for 56 years. Larry grew up on a dairy farm and continued his love of farming with his own hog farm. For 50 years, he worked at Lamb Industrial Supply. He was a faithful member of Noordeloos Christian Reformed Church.

He possessed a deep appreciation for the outdoors, dedicating his time to woodworking, farming, gardening, hunting, and traveling. He cherished time with his family at their Bear Lake cottage, enjoyed attending the many sporting events of his children and grandchildren, and loved lively family gatherings.

In addition to his wife, Betty, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Michelle and Doug Holstege (Rachel and Aaron Van Donselaar, Kristen and Peter Laning, Jocelyn and Levi Smits, Darrin, Trent), Laura Petroelje, Jill and Jason Holstege (Lydia, Cora, Hannah, Jared, Justin, Joshua, Kayla, Josiah), and Deb and Chris Lamer (Breanna, Allison, Aubrey); eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Sandy and Ron Kleinheksel, Dave and Marge Petroelje, Paul and Sherry Petroelje, Linda and Kendall VanderKamp, Jack and Beth Petroelje; Betty’s siblings: Karen Wolters, Patsy Bull, Mary and Mark Scheerhorn, Tom and Diane Kapenga, and many extended family members.

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Darlene Slachter, of Grand Haven, who peacefully entered the presence of her Lord on August 1, 2026, at the age of 65.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Cornelius ("Casey") and Mary Verwys, and her dear brother, Cornelius ("Neal") Verwys.

She leaves behind her loving siblings, Randy (Rosie) Verwys, Mary Koetje, Shirley Verwys, John Verwys, and Paul Verwys; daughter, Candie (Dustin) Sentz; and two adored granddaughters, Eliana and Lyla Palmer. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces, Jamie (Skip) Short and Kaylee (Justin) Duram, and nephew, Kyle Koetje. She held a special place in the lives of her treasured great-nieces and great-nephews, Raegan and Madison Short, Isaiah Verwys, and Sophia, Remington, Tucker, Easton, Asher, and Tate Duram. She also leaves behind extended family and countless friends whose lives were forever changed by her love, kindness, and unwavering faith.

She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like family and faithfully checked in on those she loved. To many of her younger coworkers, she became like a godmother — always offering a listening ear, sharing wisdom, teaching life lessons (and even how to drive), giving thoughtful advice, and lifting others up through heartfelt prayer. She shared a special bond with her dear young friend, Kayla Coats, whom she loved as family.

She enjoyed taking daily walks with her beloved dog, Bear, chatting with neighbors, laughing, shopping trips, canoeing, and just spending time with family and friends. Her contagious smile, uplifting spirit, and genuine love touched countless lives. Her faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. She loved the Lord with all her heart and lived out her faith through service, kindness, and generosity. Whether volunteering, helping those in need, or offering encouragement and prayer, she reflected Christ's love in all she did. She was humble, generous with her time, and thrifty in the way she lived, always thinking of others.

Above all else, she loved her family and wanted to be remembered for her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Though she will be deeply missed, her love, service, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. We find comfort knowing she has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and now rests in the eternal joy of her Savior.

A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Cook Memorial Chapel, 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, Michigan, with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Beaverdam Cemetery. Connie Lea Sneathen

October 24, 1944-August 2, 2026

Connie Lea (Hall) Sneathen, age 81 of Dorr, Michigan, passed away on August 2, 2026.

Connie was born on October 24, 1944, in Belding, Michigan, to Clayton and Maxine (Doty) Hall. She graduated from Belding High School in 1962 and went on to attend cosmetology school. Connie met the love of her life, Peter D. Sneathen, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On January 28, 1967, the two tied the knot and went on to start a beautiful and loving family in Dorr, Michigan.

Connie worked for many years as a hairstylist and retired in 2016 from ABC Auto Auction in Wayland, working as a title turner. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, family reunions, camping, fishing, being in the water and outdoors, playing card games, knitting, styling hair, bird watching, reading the Bible, and watching tennis, Kansas City Chiefs football, and comedy shows. She loved the music of Josh Groban, Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton, and Michael Buble. She was a fantastic cook and baker. Her family will always remember her warm tapioca pudding, red velvet cake, frozen strawberry jam, and her legendary frosted Christmas sugar cookies.

She approached life with an open heart and an open mind. Those remarkable qualities fueled her wonderful sense of humor, and her home was always filled with laughter, joy, and the warmth of her presence. She was welcoming, accepting, and inviting of all who were fortunate to know her. She could make people feel loved anywhere she went and was able to make friends easily. She was generous with her time and wanted others to feel loved and special — a quality that she passed on to her family.

She was a longtime member of the Community of Christ Church and was a devoted servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Peter D. Sneathen, in 2017; parents, Clayton and Maxine Hall; and brothers, Terry Hall and Jim Hall.

She is survived by her children, Tanya (Dantáe) Barden and Pete (April) Sneathen; grandchildren, Carter Sneathen, Parker Sneathen, Kayla Wustman, and Justin (Bayleigh) Wustman; and great-grandchild, Payton Wustman.

A celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Douglas Walker Park, 1195 84th St. SW, Byron Center, MI. Vincent P. Staffney, age 74, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Muskegon, Michigan.

He was born to Donald and Lou Anne (Stenholm) Staffney on December 4, 1951, in Muskegon, Michigan. Vincent received his associate's degree in accounting and was at the top of his class. He then went on to work in construction for 30 years, building homes.

He is survived in death by his sister, Cathy (Gary) Barnes; stepdaughters, Mindi Darling, Rhonda George, along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lou Anne Staffney.

Marilyn Ann (Brown) Steele

Marilyn Ann Steele, age 95, of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Grand Pines Assisted Living.

She was born on August 13, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Zack and Jean (Denby) Brown. Marilyn married George "Cal" Steele on November 29, 1980, in Spring Lake, Michigan. He preceded her in death on November 9, 2012, just days shy of celebrating 32 years of marriage.

Marilyn graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit and went on to enjoy a long career in administrative and secretarial work. Throughout the years, she worked for Detroit Edison Company, General Motors, and Detroit Overseas before serving as a teacher's aide with the Farmington School District. She later returned to secretarial work, spending time with MI Plastics and Sealed Power before her retirement.

Marilyn's faith was an important part of her life. She was a devoted member of Covenant Life Church, where she participated in the Prime-Time Group and Bible Study Group. Marilyn also dedicated countless hours to serving others through volunteer work at North Ottawa Community Hospital, Stephen Ministry, International Aid, and local hospice organizations. Her compassionate heart and willingness to help those in need left a lasting impact on many lives.

Marilyn enjoyed staying active and could often be found out walking. A naturally social person, she cherished time spent with friends and was an active participant in a widows' group, where she found companionship and shared many meaningful friendships. Marilyn's warm personality, caring spirit, and genuine interest in others will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Janice "Jan" (Andy) Scherf, Diane (Doug) Sparling, Kathleen (Ed) Archer, and Dan (Jane) Steele; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her sister, Jan Benningfield; and her brother, David (Karen Strand) Brown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cal; sister, Barbara (Herbert) Mills; brother-in-law, Robert Benningfield; and nephew, Daniel Benningfield.

The memorial service for Marilyn will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Covenant Life Church, with Pastor Bruce Ballast officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Philip A. Van Der Kooi, age 47, of Zeeland, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Resthaven Care Center.

Philip was born on November 2, 1978, in Zeeland, Michigan, to George and Kay (Veldheer) Van Der Kooi. As the youngest of seven children, he brought joy to his family throughout his life. Philip had a lifelong love of baseball and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. He especially enjoyed listening to games on the radio and attending several games at Comerica Park. His enthusiasm for the game and his kind spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents, George and Kay Van Der Kooi.

He is survived by his siblings, Mary (Joe) Beelen; Lois Van Der Kooi (Larry Cleveringa); Daniel (Vicki) Van Der Kooi; Ruth (Kevin) Nagelkirk; Mark (Alicia) Van Der Kooi; and Anna (Dave) Cook. He is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews and 35 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation with the family will be 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland, Michigan 49464.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Borculo Christian Reformed Church, 6464 96th Ave., Zeeland, MI 49464.

Private interment will take place at Olive Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of Holland.

Philip will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

David Glen Vander Zwaag

February 16, 1949-July 30, 2026

David Glen Vander Zwaag, age 77, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, after a courageous battle with colon cancer.

David was born on February 16, 1949, in Zeeland, Michigan, to Paul and Florence Vander Zwaag. As the oldest of three children, he grew up on the farm alongside his two sisters and graduated from West Ottawa High School. Following graduation, he attended Andrews University for a short period of time, where he studied agriculture before beginning a lifetime of hard work and service to others.

David proudly served in the Michigan National Guard for ten years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a dedicated businessman and entrepreneur, owning and operating Tulip City Standard, Tulip City Towing, and B&J Towing. Later in life, he returned to one of his greatest passions, working on the family farm, Crisp Country Acres, where he found immense joy in farming and delivering produce.

David was a loyal sports fan who rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams. He was an avid University of Michigan supporter and faithfully followed the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, and Detroit Tigers through every season, good or bad.

Those who knew David will remember his incredible sense of humor and his ability to make others laugh. He had a gift for bringing smiles to people, even during difficult times. His generous spirit and caring nature touched countless lives. He genuinely cared about people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His employees were more than employees; they were family. He took care of them, supported them when they needed it most, and earned their respect, loyalty, and love in return.

Above all else, David loved his family. He cherished his wife, Kimberley, who was not only his partner of nearly 30 years but also his best friend. Their years together were filled with love, friendship, laughter, and unwavering devotion to one another. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who found great joy in the people he loved.

David was also a man of deep and abiding faith. He loved Jesus, found comfort and strength in God’s Word, and faithfully relied on the Lord throughout every season of his life. His faith guided the way he lived, loved, forgave, and cared for others. Whether facing life’s blessings or its challenges, he trusted God wholeheartedly and lived as an example of quiet faithfulness.

Even throughout his illness, David’s grateful heart never wavered. During the final months of his life, he continually thanked the nurses and caregivers who cared for him. He looked for opportunities to encourage them, make them smile, and remind them how appreciated they were. His kindness, humility, and gentle spirit remained evident until the very end.

David will be remembered for his quick wit, unwavering loyalty, generous heart, and remarkable ability to make people laugh, even during life’s most difficult moments. He lived a life marked by hard work, faith, forgiveness, compassion, and love. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, the family he treasured, and the example he set through his kindness, humility, strength, and steadfast trust in the Lord.

While his family grieves his loss, they find comfort in knowing that David’s faith has become sight and that he is now at peace in the presence of the Savior he loved so dearly.

David is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kimberly Vander Zwaag; children, Dan (Patti) Vander Zwaag, Debbie (Jarade) Olson, Matthew (Amber) Baumann, and Kaycee Kay; grandchildren, Gracelynn Olson, Garrett Olson, Jacob Vander Zwaag, Madeline (Isrrael Torres) Vander Zwaag, Ava Baumann, Kaydence Braden, Raygen Braden, Gannon Braden, and Mayzee Braden; mother-in-law, Sharon Forgette; brother-in-law, Scott (Renee) Wagenmaker; and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Paul (Florence) Vander Zwaag; sisters, Carol Lampers and Mari (Doug) Visser; father-in-law, Kenneth Wagenmaker; brother-in-law, Kenneth Dale Wagenmaker; and step-father-in-law, Charles Forgette.
