Janet Ruth Bell
August 21, 1928-November 14, 2025
Janet Ruth Bell, age 97, of Spring Lake, Michigan, and formerly of Midland, Michigan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on November 14, 2025.
She was born in Salem, Oregon, on August 21, 1928, to Carl and Lydia Ruth (Liening) Miller. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Oregon State University. On November 24, 1950, she married Paul E. Bell in Salem, Oregon. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2022.
Janet is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Michele Bell; her three grandsons, Thomas (Courtney Brown), James (Alexis Yezbick), and Michael Bell; her great-grandson Theo Bell; her brother-in-law Earnest Bell; her sisters-in-law Winifred Payne and Katherine Bell; and several nieces and nephews.
Janet is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Lydia Ruth Miller, her sister-in-law Connie Bell and her brothers-in-law Gordon Bell and Charles Payne.
Janet was highly skilled throughout her life at academics, teaching, working administratively in a variety of private companies, higher education, and religious organizations, and she was an expert at leading projects and planning and seeing through events in her career in professional publications and administration, as well as in philanthropic affiliations. She had high standards for quality in all that she did, and she inspired others to produce excellent outcomes while maintaining positive relationships. Before marrying her husband, Paul, and before he became an accomplished professor at Penn State University, she played a crucial role in helping him to learn how to study and excel in academics when he had been struggling as an undergraduate student.
Her abilities were exceptional in teaching technical and language arts subjects. She was proficient in music and other creative endeavors, including all forms of handicrafts like knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and designing and making clothing and other fabric-based articles. Choral singing was important for Janet throughout her life, and her strong alto voice was an integral part of a variety of church choirs over more than six decades. Even well into her nineties, she recalled by heart the lyrics to nearly every song performed at instrumental and vocal performances that she attended. She was masterful at the piano, and her singing voice was always a joy to hear.
Janet was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in State College, PA, and she was a former Alpha Xi Delta Sorority president while at Oregon State University.
While working in technical publications at an engineering firm in Pennsylvania, she was granted increasingly advanced security standings until she had attained the highest civilian level of security status granted by the federal government. Only she and the CEO of the company were privy to strategic information regarding some of the firm’s government contract projects.
In addition to being a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many wherever she lived, Janet was a wonderful educator, planner, organizer, project leader, and contributor to her churches and communities, and she led a happy, loving, family-oriented, and satisfying life. She will be greatly missed.
A private service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Janet may be given to hospice organizations. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at sytsemafh.com.

Carey Jon Boote
February 23, 1951-October 31, 2025
Carey Jon Boote, age 74, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, surrounded by family after a courageous, decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born on February 23, 1951, in Hull, Iowa, Carey was the son of the late Clarence and Carol Boote. Growing up on a dairy farm, he honed his strong work ethic in his younger years, waking up early in the mornings before school to help his father tend to the livestock.
After graduating from Boyden-Hull High School in 1969, he attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and majored in biology. While at Hope, he was a Baker’s scholar, member of the Arcadian fraternity, and student taught, where he cultivated his passion for teaching others. Most importantly, in college, he met his wife of 52 years, Susan Ponstein. Shortly after college, Carey started work for the former Prince Corp., where he worked for over 25 years in various management roles.
Ever the hard worker, Carey devoted his time and energy to his work at Prince, typically waking up at the crack of dawn to get to the office and leaving it in the evening to spend time with his family, who regularly greeted him at the door upon his return. Indeed, caring for his three children: Jillian, John, and Jacquelyn was his pride and joy in life. Whether it was moving them into college dorms, helping them with homework, chaperoning soccer road trips, or organizing evening family boat rides — Carey’s proudest achievements were his three children.
Aside from his family, Carey was an active member of Christ Memorial Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan, and served in the consistory on multiple boards. A testament to his generous spirit, in his free time, he also spent many years volunteering with Junior Achievement. As a longtime resident of Holland, Carey loved attending Hope College basketball games and his Friday morning meet-ups with his close friends from the community.
Carey is survived by his devoted wife, Susan (Ponstein) Boote, and three children Jillian (Brian) Parsons, John Boote, and Jacquelyn (Edward) Alfriend, in addition to four grandchildren Megan Parsons, Colin Parsons, Avery Alfriend, and James Alfriend. He also is survived by four siblings Brenda (Don) DeBruyn, Cathy Boote, Daniel (Mary) Boote, and Evan (Nancy) Boote. A memorial service for the family will take place in early 2026. Growing up in Detroit, Kathy grew up as a hockey fan and loved going to games with family and friends. She chose to make Spring Lake her permanent home in 1979. She worked for Grand Haven Area Schools and retired after 30-plus years. Animals, especially cats, were her passion her whole life.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will take place in the summer of 2026, at her favorite annual event: Beach Day at North Beach Park in Ferrysburg, Michigan. If you knew Kathy, she probably made you laugh. Continue to bring that laughter into your life because it enriches the lives of those around you.

Pennie Lynn Robertson
July 31, 1942-November 2, 2025
Pennie Lynn Robertson, age 83, of Spring Lake, passed away at home on November 2, 2025.
Born on July 31, 1942, in Harbor Beach, Michigan, Pennie was the youngest of seven children born to Earl and Stella (MacKichan) English. She attended Grace Nursing School in Detroit, where she met the love of her life, Gary Robertson, while he was attending medical school at Wayne State University. Pennie was on the Queen’s Court at the Grace Hospital Cotillion Ball and was introduced to Gary by her dear friend Penny Harvey. He became her date for the Ball, and so began their lifelong love story.
Pennie and Gary were married for 62 years and shared an extraordinary life together. After being married in Harbor Beach, their journey took them to Royal Oak, where Gary completed his medical internship, to South Dakota during his service in the U.S. Air Force, and then to New Orleans while he completed his residency and specialty training at Tulane and Charity Hospital. In 1969, they settled in Grand Haven when Gary established his OB/GYN practice at North Ottawa Community Hospital and where they built an incredible life, raised their family, and became deeply rooted in the community.
Pennie was devoted to her family — a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She and Gary raised three children: Heather Robertson (Hendrik Basson), Holly Johnson (Erick), and Gray Robertson (Amy). She was also the proud grandmother of Annica Robertson (Michael), Kai Robertson, Amber Bray, Madelynn Johnson (Mike Szajnowski), Ian Johnson (Bethany Jewison), Kate Robertson, and McKeathan Robertson, and the adoring great-grandmother of Chase and Aspen Robertson. The Robertson family always had dogs — and Pennie especially loved their current pup, Molly.
Pennie was known for her warmth, grace and wicked sense of humor. She was a gifted homemaker and an exceptional entertainer — renowned for her cooking, her beautiful table settings, and her legendary homemade bread and pecan rolls. An avid collector of English antiques, Pennie had a refined eye for beauty and created a home filled with love and charm. Her friendships were deep and spanned decades — she knew how to find special people and hold them close. Lynn, Penny and curiously, many of them were named Nancy.
She gave back to her community in countless ways as a volunteer, committee member, and cherished friend. The Tri-Cities Family YMCA held a special place in her heart — particularly its Early Childhood Center, which will be named in honor of the Robertson family.
Pennie and Gary shared a lifelong love of travel, exploring the world together and creating countless memories with family vacations along the way. As her backyard for years, the peace and solitude of Duncan Woods brought her comfort and joy.
Pennie is survived by her beloved husband, Gary; her children and grandchildren; her great-grandchildren; her sisters, Joann Hargraves, Judy Schlabach and special cousin, MaryJane Balcueva as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Marion Henderson, Norma Harris, Tillie Krause, and Alton English as well as her brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Kay Robertson.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Erika for her loving care over the past year, as well as to the compassionate team of caregivers from Comfort Keepers and Harbor Hospice. Though Pennie valued her privacy, she deeply appreciated the kindness and dedication of those who cared for her.
A celebration of life will be held Jan. 15 at the Spring Lake Country Club — additional details to be provided in early January. Memorial contributions may be made to the Y for All Capital Campaign at the Tri-Cities Family YMCA in Grand Haven or to the M. Gary MD and Pennie Robertson Endowed Scholarship at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services.

Randall "Randy" Stroud
November 2, 1959-October 26, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that we share that our beloved Randall “Randy” Stroud, age 65, of Grand Haven and formerly of Northville, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2025.
He was born on November 2nd, 1959, in Three Rivers, to Harley and Sandra (Hill) Stroud. Randy spent most of his youth in Muskegon.
On May 7, 1994, he married Jane McLaren in Northville. Randy blessed their marriage with two of his biggest sources of pride and joy: his children, Janessa and Jason, from his previous marriage. Shortly thereafter, they were blessed with John and Zachary. Together, they built new traditions, shared adventures, and established a foundation of love and faith in God for each of them to flourish. Randy was in awe and amazement of each of his children’s individual talents, capacity to grow, and desire to be of service to their family, friends, and communities.
A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Randy went on to earn a marketing degree and certification as an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic. Keeping with his passion, he carried on a successful career in aviation for 30-plus years. He started at Pentastar Aviation, a division of Chrysler, as an aircraft mechanic. Recognized for his strengths in communication, technical problem-solving, and building connections with everyone he met — from mechanics, customers to business executives — he grew into the VP of New Business Development. Following this, he shared his talents with Signature Flight Support/TechnicAir until his retirement.
Randy was very knowledgeable and talented in so many areas, especially working with his hands and fixing things. He shared these gifts as he forged loving bonds with his children, siblings, neighbors, coworkers, nieces and nephews, and even his children’s friends who quickly became part of his extended family. He always enjoyed helping anyone he got to know, and he got to know A LOT of people. He loved to share these talents, in service to others, whether it be through offering a helping hand, a humorous story, or a listening ear.
He was a “Michigan Man” at heart, who loved nature and the beauty of the lakes, the birds, and the fall colors that come with the changing of seasons. He cherished spending time with loved ones and his dogs (all generations of them), adventuring on the Grand River, voyaging to Lake Michigan, building famous bonfires, and sharing stories and belly laughs. He passes on his love for adventure, nature, and the water to his children and grandchildren.
Randy has left an imprint on countless people; his generous heart and spirit live on through Jane, his children, grandchildren, and all those he touched throughout his life. He always shared and lived by the mantra, “be humble and kind.” He challenged everyone around him to be a better person. He gave his family and friends enough love to face any trial. This warmth and love help guide us through his untimely passing.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jane McLaren; four children: Janessa (Tim) Smit, Jason Stroud, John (Kathleen Felicelli) Stroud, Zachary Stroud; three grandchildren: Tenley and Tatum Smit and Elliott Stroud; brothers: Bradley (Nick) Stroud and Steven Stroud; stepsister, Cindy Lee; stepfather, Owen Hansen; sisters-in-law: Donna McLaren, Terry White, Charey Fox; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, and close friends.
He is united in Heaven with his parents, Sandra Hansen, Harley, and Marjorie Stroud.
In keeping with his wishes, a celebration in the spring of 2026. Memorial contributions in memory of Randy may be given to the and or a tree or park bench coordinated through the family.
In keeping with his wishes, a celebration of Randy’s life will be hosted at their place on the Grand River in Grand Haven in the Spring of 2026. More details will be shared here. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Randy Stroud's memory may be given to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the family wants to have a tree planted in his honor and a park bench in his honor — coordinated through his wife, Jane McLaren.
Randy shared a hundred stories a day, and we are missing those moments. To help fill that void, please take time to share your stories here for us to cherish.
