Martin "Bob" Hughes

June 8, 1931-October 3, 2026

Martin Robert Hughes, affectionately known as Bob, age 95, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 3, 2026.

Bob and his wife, Eleanor, lived in Grand Rapids until he became the executive director of Camp Geneva in 1974, at which time they moved to Holland. Earlier in his career, Bob worked in design and engineering at Bissell, where he earned a patent for a disposable dust mop. His work at Camp Geneva became a deeply meaningful part of his life, bringing together his faith, leadership, and dedication to others. During his tenure, he helped strengthen the camp's financial foundation, expanded opportunities for year-round retreats, introduced Camp Sunshine for children and young adults with special needs, and supported Athletes' Week and camping programs for those with muscular dystrophy.

Bob dedicated much of his life to serving his church and community. He served as president of the Kenowa Hills School Board, a West Michigan YMCA Board member, president of the West Michigan Arabian Horse Association, and director of MidWest Rocket Football. He was a member of the board of directors of Maranatha Conference Center and Camp Geneva, served on the Remembrance Reformed and Christ Memorial consistories, and contributed his leadership as a Tulip Time Board Director and a board member of the Royal Coast Condo Association in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Sports were a lifelong source of enjoyment for Bob. At Union High School, he was a member of the 1948 state championship football team and the 1949 state championship baseball team, earning recognition as an All-City First Baseman in 1949. He went on to play baseball with the Grand Rapids Red Sox and basketball with the Class A Lear Inc. team. In later years, he continued to enjoy watching games and following his great-grandchildren's activities.

Above all, Bob treasured his family and his faith. He began each morning with devotions and prayer and shared that steady faith with those around him. Known as "Bobby" to his great-grandchildren, he brought laughter, encouragement, and a sense of belonging to family gatherings. He loved time spent together in Florida and around the Thanksgiving table, and considered his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren his greatest accomplishment.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, in 2019.

He is survived by his daughter, Luann (Ronald) DeVries; son, Paul (Lynn Marks) Hughes; grandchildren, Amy (Jordan) Kramer and Jill (Justin) Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Emerson, Hadley, Claire, and William.

James "Jim" P. Morris

October 30, 1936-October 1, 2026

James "Jim" Morris, age 89, of Grand Haven, passed away at home on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

He was born on October 30, 1936, in Water Valley, Kentucky, to the late Reginald and Mary (Pirtle) Morris. He married Patricia Ann Newington on August 20, 1955, in Detroit, and she preceded him in death on January 25, 2025, after almost 70 years of marriage.

After high school, Jim went to work at his father's used car dealership. Later, he took a job with Wonder Bread loading trucks, and then driving delivery trucks. Jim eventually took a position with Pfizer as a pharmaceutical sales rep. This brought the family from the Detroit area to Grand Haven. Enjoying being in sales, Jim went over to Merrill Lynch as a stockbroker. Later, seeking new challenges, Jim moved into the insurance business and went to work for Allstate, where he eventually became a territorial manager. Jim then moved on to the Lamse Agency, Wolbrink Agency, and the VanderMolen Agency, where he became an owner.

Jim purchased his first agency in Rockford from the Jack Root Insurance Agency and after a few name changes, the agency became Morris, Schnoor & Gremel. After retiring, he came back to work to help his son, Glenn, build an agency from scratch.

Jim and Pat were both longtime members of Lakeshore Baptist Church, where he was an active volunteer and participant. They enjoyed spending more than 50 years at the family cottage on McLaren Lake in Hesperia. Jim also enjoyed boating and spent many years traveling the southern circuit with the Tennessee Drag Boat Association, which was later called the Outboard Drag Boat Association, and the Hydro-Plane Boating Association of America.

Jim and Pat had several dogs over the years and always enjoyed walking their toy poodles around the neighborhood.

Jim will be forever remembered and missed by his children, Shirley (Michael) Bagalay and Glenn (Carla) Morris; five grandchildren, Ryan (Ashley), Adam, and Marissa Bagalay, Sydney and Nate (Lauren) Morris; eight great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Deborah (Edward) Applebee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat; sister, JoAnn Burdick; and brother Marvin Morris.

The funeral service for Jim will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Lakeshore Baptist Church, with Pastor Nate Birkholz officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to Lakeshore Baptist Church- Deacons Fund.
