F. Elaine Hartley Adam

June 11, 1946-September 7, 2026

I was born the daughter of Edwin L. Hartley and Eleanor D. Johnson in Springfield, Illinois.

Before I came into the world, my sister, Phyllis (Dave) Baseler, was born, later marrying Dave and raising three beautiful daughters.

I have read a lot of obits in my life and have been saddened by the lives they have led. They have done many things, and so many of them have been honorable. The problem is that so many of them say nothing about eternity. Our life on earth is like a vapor, no matter how long or short.

One Sunday evening, November of 1963, I was sitting on the steps outside of my dad's church. He was preaching on the fact that there are many things in our lives that we can change, but only the Lord Jesus Christ can change a heart. I got up off of those stairs and down the isle into the arms of my earthly father to accept the free gift of salvation from my Heavenly Father, a sinner saved by grace.

I met Jack Martin Adam on April 24, 1964, marrying on December 24, 1964. The marriage brought Warren Hartley Adam into our life, and a couple of years later, Jacquelyn Elayne Adam made our family complete. Of course, as families grow, we have a wonderful daughter, Michelle, and two wonderful grandchildren, Nathan Adam and Marley Adam.

Jacquelyn brought our wonderful son, Jody John Olney, to our family, giving us Cara (Joey) Wright with two precious great-granddaughters, Eliora Jane and Iris Jayne; Alyssa (Andy) Baldwin and great-grandchildren, Grayson Martin and Brooklyn Eleanor, Kayla (Ryan) Ihrke and very handsome little men Ezekiel Dawson, Aston Rowan, and daughter Brekkyn Reign Ihrke, Hannah Olney and Adam Olney.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services, 7000 W. State St., Rockford, IL 61102. Burial will be in Willwood Burial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

William Ellison Black Jr.

January 4, 1939-September 6, 2026

William Ellison Black Jr., age 87, passed away on September 6, 2026, in Holland.

He was born January 4, 1939, in Savannah, Georgia, to William E. Sr. and Mildred (Dixon) Black. A veteran of the U.S. Army, William served as a Chaplain’s Assistant, a role that reflected a steady devotion to faith and a life shaped by quiet service to others. In his younger years, he sang in quartets and as a soloist, offering his voice with sincerity and purpose.

William was hard-working and steadfast, retiring from Haworth after 21 years. He was a member of Central Wesleyan Church, where his faithful spirit was evident in his love of reading the Bible and discussing its passages — conversations marked by care, conviction, and a generous willingness to share what mattered most to him.

In 1965, William married Carolyn (Brink), and together they shared 61 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Brink); his children, Kristina (Keith) Smith and Kevin Black; and his grandchildren, Elliana (Logan) Harig, Serena (Nicholas) Essenburg, Marlaina Smith, and Josiah Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Black; his sister-in-law, Karen Brink; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. William dearly loved his grandchildren, and they loved him in return.

There will be a celebration of life with military honors at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Central Wesleyan Church, 446 W. 40th St., Holland.

Margit Gorog Demicke

May 31, 1936-September 9, 2026

Margit G. DeMicke, age 90, of N. Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on September 9, 2026, in Holland, Michigan.

Margit is preceded in death by her husband, Peter DeMicke; parents, Sandor and Rozalia Gorog; sister, Terez, and daughter, Linda Andre.

Margit is survived by her daughter, Janet Andre (Richard Stec), and sibling, Leslie (Linda) Gorog.

A future memorial service is planned in Holland, Michigan, with final interment at Elmlawn Memorial Park, 3939 Delaware Ave., Kenmore, New York.

Mom was proud to be Hungarian. She would tell anyone she would meet she was surprised she made it to be 90 years old. When the Russian forces moved through Hungary at the end of World War II, the family decided to leave Hungary. They got as far as Graz, Austria, spending the next seven years living in a Displaced Peoples Camp.

Mom typically referred to the camp as Hitler’s barracks, its previous use. While there, Mom was hospitalized for typhoid fever, placed in a sanatorium for tuberculosis and tragically lost her younger sister to typhoid fever. Catholic Charities helped move the family to the United States in 1952. The family was one of the last immigrants processed through Ellis Island and placed in Buffalo, New York. I have the one trunk that contained the belongings they brought to the U.S. At that time, there were no social benefits; they had to work to survive. I think this childhood contributed to Mom being tough, feisty and critical. Even though she could be ornery and negative, she loved and helped those she loved.

Fast forward to a more recent time — Mom married Peter, and they were married for 39 years. After retirement, they moved to Florida and enjoyed their house in the warm Florida sunshine. Well, most of the time. Mom would tell everyone Hurricane Irma was a "piece of cake," compared to Hurricane Ian. They had many caring neighbors in Palm Island. They spent significant time at a wonderful Hungarian club, the Petofi Club, and at the local Am Vets and VFW clubs.

Mom enjoyed fermented water (wine), dark chocolate with hazelnuts, and Richie’s salmon. After Pete's passing in 2023, Mom's health declined. Mom had several falls in her Florida home, which precipitated our bringing her to Michigan in March 2025. She was living in a nearby assisted living community to allow us to help care and visit her. It was the right decision because over the next 18 months, Mom had multiple hospital visits and rehab stays from breaking her left hip, then her right hip, several UTIs, COVID-19, and an irregular heartbeat.

Rich and I were able to spend time and help motivate Mom to get back on her feet, which she grudgingly supported during these 18 months. I cannot say Mom enjoyed the cold weather in Michigan, but she did relish the attention of having Rich, her favorite Polish son-in-law, and myself, the Boss, spending time with her daily. On Sept. 9, Mom, with me by her bedside, decided it was her time to join her father, Sandor Gorog, daughter, Linda Andre, mother and Peter.

Mom will be interred with her daughter, my sister, Linda.

Rosemary Dorn

December 14, 1943-September 6, 2026

Rosemary Dorn, age 82, of Holland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Christopher Dorn, Matthew and Ania (Waz) Dorn, and Anne (Dorn) and Dante DiVitto, and her four grandchildren, Josephine and Nicholas DiVitto, and Gabriel and Antonina Dorn. She will also be missed by her brother, Bill (Peggy) DeJonge; brothers-in-law, David Dorn and Bob Balfoort; and sister-in-law, Barbara Dalman, along with many nieces and nephews who also loved her very much.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Albert DeJonge, and her beloved husband of 49 years, Steven Dorn, who passed away in 2015.

Rosemary was born in Holland in 1943 to Charles and Hilda DeJonge and graduated from Union High School in Grand Rapids in 1961. After a few years of professional life, she married Steve in 1966 and devoted her life to being a loving wife and mother to her three children. She spent many hours volunteering as a room parent, driving to Little League and dance classes, sewing doll clothing, then marching band color guard costumes and flags, and in retirement spent 10 years as an active volunteer with Hospice of Holland. More recently, she also took on volunteer roles at her final place of residence, Covenant Living of Grand Rapids.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, Dykstra Funeral Home, Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Ave., Holland, MI 49423. Visitation starts at 10 a.m.; Dr. Christopher Dorn will officiate. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Covenant Living Benevolent Fund.

Jack Duthler

January 20, 1951-September 5, 2026

Perhaps you knew him as Jack Duthler, or perhaps you knew him as The Crusher if you were a fan of the Grand Rapids Christian wrestling team, or perhaps you knew him as The Big Dutchman if you were hanging out at Jocko’s Bar in Saugatuck, Michigan, for the better part of several decades.

Whatever you called him (and he would say he has been called worse), Jack Herman Duthler passed away surrounded by family on September 4, 2026, having lived his 75 years full of practiced values, well-timed jokes, deep connections to family, and unquenchable curiosity.

Born January 20, 1951, Jack was the middle child of five siblings. He had an upbringing in Ada, Michigan, that anchored him with a strong moral compass, gave him plenty of opportunities to question authority, and instilled in him an unshakeable sense of integrity. Jack’s lifelong practice of respectful skepticism gave him the courage to stand up for values he had earned.

Jack rambled a bit before he met his wife, Sue. He once moved to California and arrived with only $5 in his pocket. In 1975, his best friend Bob set him up on a blind date with Sue, and they married astonishingly soon after that. Jack used to joke that he knew he had to marry her when he learned her father owned a bar. Their marriage was authentic, and the years they shared demonstrated their deep respect for the commitment they made to each other and their shared values.

They raised four children. Jack taught them to respectfully question authority, to honor veterans and other public servants, to fetch him a beer when it was empty, to drive with unparalleled presence and precision, to read the newspaper, to listen to literally every genre of music that exists, to listen to their mother, to time the punchline, to find within themselves relentless stamina for long road trips, and to take their responsibilities seriously to their own families.

Perhaps his and Sue’s greatest legacy for their children is the ferocity with which those children show up for each other as adults. Quite literally, the four of them would do anything for each other if the circumstances demanded heroics.

Jack knew what bird was on the feeder. He was sometimes surprisingly sentimental. He studied the Founding Fathers. He cried at Memorial Day parades. He scared his daughters’ boyfriends. He had a great singing voice. He made the world’s finest grilled chicken. He loved his children’s friends. He got donuts for the grandkids. He coached softball. He demanded good morning hugs. He would shake your hand and look you in the eye whether he agreed with you or not. He was a good friend. He was a good man.

He leaves behind a loving and connected circle of friends and family. His wife, Susanne Duthler; children, Sarah Duthler, Jill Thompson (Steve Vandenbussche), Jonathan (Holly) Duthler, Kate Thomsen (Mike) Savina; and his grandchildren, Alex Thompson, Marleigh Vandenbussche, Jack Thompson, Avery Vandenbussche, Simon Thompson, Elle Thomsen, Lyla Savina, Natalie Duthler, Sullivan Thomsen, and Noah Duthler, who brought him tremendous joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Jeanette Duthler.

The celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Douglas, Michigan. The prayer service will be at 11 a.m.; lunch will follow. John Caleb Haight

May 29, 1945-September 2, 2026

John Caleb Haight — loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend to many — passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at his home, surrounded by those who loved him best.

John was born in Denver, Colorado, on May 29, 1945, to Ludwig and Lucille Haight. He spent his childhood in Burley, Idaho, exploring all that the high desert and the great Snake River had to offer. From an early age, John enjoyed reading adventure novels, and he called himself "Captain John Haight." The name stuck, as did his lifelong spirit of curiosity and adventure.

John graduated from the University of Idaho, proudly leading the way as a Vandal for three of his siblings. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. During the summers, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a wildland firefighter, helping protect the Idaho landscapes he treasured throughout his life.

After graduation, John returned home to work for his father at Haight Motor Sales, the family's Ford dealership. He eventually headed east to begin a nearly thirty-year career with Andersen Windows, where his sales position took him to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Living near Lake Michigan sparked a love of sailing in John. He spent countless days on his boat, Appaloosa, accompanied by friends and family, along with his trusty golden retriever serving as first mate.

But John was never someone who was content to experience the world from just one place. He loved traveling: the long drives, the new landscapes, the stories collected along the way, and especially the people beside him. For John, the destination was only part of the point. The real joy was in seeing what was out there, asking "what's next?" and having someone he loved along for the ride.

And John loved his people ever so deeply.

When he met his wife, Mary, John's life became richer. Together, they created a home — and a life — that was unmistakably theirs, filled with dogs, conversation, humor, music, and adventure. Mary was his partner through it all. They found great joy in traveling, sailing on Lake Michigan, days on the ski slopes, bike rides, taking in live music, and holidays with family.

But some of John's greatest pleasures were beautifully simple: morning coffee, walks with the dogs, ice cream, good music, and quiet evenings at home with Mary. In the end, those wonderfully ordinary moments were among the ones that mattered most.

If you knew John well, you knew he had a way with words. He could tell a story, turn a phrase, make an observation, or deliver a perfectly timed line that could lighten an intense moment. His humor was clever, often unexpected, and entirely his own. Conversation with John was rarely dull. He was curious about the world and its people. He loved his country — not blindly, but hopefully. He believed deeply in human dignity and equality and in what this country could and should be. He paid attention. He thought deeply.

And through it all, the boy who called himself Captain John Haight never really left. He always carried that same curiosity and spirit of adventure, eager to see what might be waiting around the next bend — and grateful to have those he loved along for the ride.

John was predeceased by his parents, Ludwig and Lucille Haight; brother, Jim Haight; sister-in-law, Pam Nordaune; and sister, Kathryn Haight.

He leaves behind his wife, Mary Haight; and dog, Yuki; his siblings, Christine Haight Johnson (Dale) and Marjorie Haight; nieces, Sally Johnson, Tina Johnson, Katherine (Mike) Flume, Alice Johnson, and Sarah Haight; nephew, Ryan Haight; and grandnieces, Penelope Johnson-Walker and Birdie Flume; along with many friends and extended family.

A celebration of life for John will be held this fall. Additional details will be shared at a later date.

Carole Ann Hilbrands

February 23, 1937-September 6, 2026

Carole Hilbrands, age 89, went to be with her Lord and savior on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Rollin Hilbrands, and three siblings.

She is survived by her children, Kim (Tom) Glashower, Pat (Eric) Stickel, and Nancy (David) Brouwer; grandchildren, Anna (Alex) Merrill, Joel (Sheila) Glashower, Luke (Alyssa) Glashower, Micah (Alison) Glashower, Seth (Cambrie) Brouwer, Ben Brouwer; great-grandchildren, Charlie, Max, Eleanor, and Everlee Merrill, and Ella, Levi, Crew, Carolina, Thomas, and Alessandra Glashower; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Carole took care of Ron's "hobby farm" for years. She drove a bus for Hudsonville for 14 years. Carole took many trips over the years, with Germany being a favorite. She spent the last eight years at Sunset Villages and Manor where she made friends with many residents and staff. She loved watching Tigers baseball.

A celebration of life gathering will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Grace Bible Church, 3715 Wilson Ave. SW, Grandville, with visitation from 9:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Margaret Ann Landheer

Margaret Ann Landheer, age 89, of Wyoming, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 7, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Kathryn Upthegrove, and her son, Ted Landheer.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Landheer, Steve Landheer, Christine (Tim) Gochenour, Sandra (Scott) Loomis, and Brian Landheer; siblings, Fred (Suzie) Upthegrove, Jane (Bill) Kipp, Tom (Janet) Upthegrove; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Joey.

Margaret enjoyed having everyone over for the holidays. She took pride in her home and yard. Reading, Bingo, and taking a drive on the country roads made her happy.

Per Margaret's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service for Margaret will be held at a later date. Mattie Jayne (Nelson) LaRose

Mattie Jayne LaRose, age 50, of West Olive, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 4, 2026.

She was born on January 10, 1976, in Holland, Michigan, to Richard and Nadene (Slayer) Nelson. Mattie married Patrick LaRose on September 7, 2002, in Holland, Michigan.

Mattie graduated from West Ottawa High School and worked as a surgical coordinator at Trinity Health. She was a very crafty, talented artist and a generous, faithful servant and member of St. Patrick - St. Anthony Catholic Parish for many years.

Mattie had a huge heart and loved helping her community and others in need. She was especially passionate about helping children in need, which inspired her to start a toy drive for Helen DeVos Children's Research Hospital, as well as an adopt-a-family donation drive.

Mattie loved flowers, gardening, wildlife, and going to the beach. Her family was most important to her, and she loved them more than anything, especially her two boys.

Mattie is lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her loving husband of 24 years, Patrick; their two sons, Cade and Sean LaRose; her parents, Richard and Nadene Nelson; her mother-in-law, Mickey LaRose; sister, Jamie (Dennis) Muller; her brother, Lee (Laura Myers) Nelson; brothers-in-law, Mike (Keri) LaRose and Vince (Jennifer) LaRose; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Vincent LaRose.

The funeral Mass for Mattie will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, at St. Patrick Church of St. Patrick - St. Anthony Parish, with Fr. Dan Schumaker officiating. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home, with Rosary recital beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Interment will be at West Olive Cemetery.

Thomas Lee Lewis

Thomas L. Lewis, age 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Heartwood Lodge in Spring Lake, Michigan.

He was born to Marvin and Sandra (Lockard) Lewis on February 5, 1960, in Grand Haven, Michigan. In his early years, Tom was a free spirit and loved to roller skate, play guitar and was a talented artist. He also spent time hitchhiking around the country.

Tom worked as a roofer for many years and retired from a machine shop at 62. After retiring, he started his own business in window cleaning, and his passion was in renovating his home.

For the last two years of his life, he lived at Heartwood Lodge, where he was president of the Resident Council and was loved by all his fellow residents.

He is survived in death by his children, Sara Lewis, Kourtniy Bo-eve; grandchildren, Christine, Emylie, Brookelyn, Ameis, Malachi; brothers, Marvin Lewis, John Lewis, Jeff (Jodi) Lewis, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Sandra Lewis; brother, Mark Lewis.

Kristina Machiele

Kristina A. Machiele, age 79, of Zeeland, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Kris grew up in Muskegon and moved to Holland in her 20s. She worked for Hudsonville Celery Co-op and Plant Growers for more than 30 years. She was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Zeeland.

Throughout her life, Kris found great joy in singing praises to the Lord and was a longtime member of the Faith Church choir. She also enjoyed playing bingo, visiting the casino, working crossword puzzles, and playing volleyball.

Above all, Kris treasured her family. Time spent with those she loved was among her greatest joys, and her grandchildren held a particularly special place in her heart. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

Kris was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Erickson and Elma (Kindy) Erickson, and her daughter-in-law, Kelly (Perysian) Machiele.

Kris is survived by her husband of 55 years, Elton Machiele; children, Dirk (Kelly) Machiele, Dawn (Randy) Van Klompenberg, Daniele (Jason) VanDeWege, and David (Lynn) Machiele; grandchildren, Pamela (Michael) Tamminga, Tyler (Felicia) Prins, Kaleigh VanDeWege, Parker VanDeWege, Drew VanDeWege, Ethan Machiele, and Noah Machiele; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Fred Erickson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at Yntema Funeral Home. Rev. Jonathan Elgersma will officiate. Burial will be in West Drenthe Cemetery. Barbara Piaget

Barbara Piaget, age 85, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Barb was a lover of animals, nature, and camping. All throughout her life with her husband, Tom, they maintained a beautiful yard and garden and enjoyed 53 years of marriage together. She was a member of Third Reformed Church since 1972. Barb was dearly loved and will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Piaget Jr., and daughter, Leslie Piaget.

She is survived by her son, Tom and Misty Piaget; daughters, Susan and Mark Faga, Christina and Jim Trujillo; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Memorial services are at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland, MI 49423, with the Rev. Dr. Ryan Boes officiating.

Elizabeth Rios

Elizabeth “Beth” Rios, age 47, of West Olive, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Beth was born in Alice, Texas, to Arnulfo and Isabel Rios. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. Beth had an adventurous spirit and was always trying something new. She had a great sense of humor and an easy smile. Beth loved to cook for her family any chance she could get. She had a giving spirit and loved to help others. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed by all.

Mrs. Rios is survived by her children, Gabriella (Coty) Koopman, Keely (Erik) Suarez, Alexandria (Mark) Ortiz-Campbell, eight grandchildren; father, Arnulfo Rios; siblings, Arnulfo (Heather) Rios, Michael (Marjie) Rios; and many extended family and friends.

Beth was preceded in death by her mother, Isabel Rios; brother, Danny Rios; nephew, Brandon Rios; and Beth’s furry best friend, Sophie.

The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Friday, September 11, at the Dykstra Funeral Home – Mulder Chapel, 188 W. 32nd St., Holland. A funeral ceremony will be held following the visitation at 4 p.m. at the Mulder Chapel. Pastor Jordan Humbarger will preside.

Donald Michael Rockey

April 30, 1974-September 7, 2026

Don “Rockey” Rockey, age 52, of Allendale, after a courageous battle, was welcomed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 7, 2026.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Melissa; children, Joey, Savannah, and Merissa Rockey; parents, Orville and Kathy Rockey; brother, Dan Rockey; in-laws, Lois (Nick) Bristol; his in-laws, Anne (Dave) Nutall. Don was blessed to have his lifetime and closest cousins who God gave as honorary brothers and sisters. Amongst these, Don was blessed with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Some people are given a smooth path, but Don was given a mountain — and he climbed it with unmatched grace. At just 15 years old, Don became a childhood cancer survivor, beginning a lifetime marked by battles that would test him physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Thirty years later, he would face another extraordinary challenge as a heart transplant recipient, followed by years of battling lung and kidney failure. Through every mountain, every setback, and every uncertain day, Don kept climbing.

His earthly body endured more than most could imagine, but his spirit remained strong. The road was incredibly hard, yet Don never gave up. He kept fighting physically, and just as importantly, he kept fighting spiritually. His faith in Jesus Christ remained steadfast through every trial. He didn’t just believe in Jesus when life was good — he trusted him when life was at its hardest. Because of the incredible strength he showed through every battle, we began calling him “Rockey Strong.” It was more than a nickname — it became a way of describing who Don was. Like Rocky, he kept getting back up. No matter how hard the fight became, Don kept standing, kept moving forward, and never surrendered.

Don had a genuine love for people. His family and close friends were always at the center of his world, and above all, he loved his wife, Melissa, and his three children, Joey, Savannah, and Merissa. They were his heart, his greatest source of love, and a constant reason to keep fighting.

Over the last six years, as Don faced some of his greatest health challenges, his circle of people he loved grew in ways none of them could have expected. Along the way, he formed many newfound friendships with the doctors, nurses, caregivers, therapists, and healthcare workers who walked beside him through his fight. They became more than people caring for him; they became friends, part of his journey, and part of his story. Don had a way of connecting with people, and even in the midst of his own struggles, he could make those around him feel valued and appreciated.

Again and again, Don found the strength to face whatever came next. He fought, and he won. Then another battle would come, and he fought again. Physically and spiritually, he refused to give up.

Don’s life became a testimony of perseverance, courage, faith, and love — a reminder that victory isn’t always found in never being knocked down, but in refusing to stay down. Through every battle, Don never walked alone. He carried his faith with him, and that faith carried him through.

His earthly body may have been broken by years of battles, but his soul remained untouched. And now, after a lifetime of climbing mountains and fighting battles, Don has finally laid his burdens down. His earthly fight is over. He is resting safely, breathing easily, and whole in the presence of his savior, Jesus Christ.

While those who loved him will miss him more than words can express, his legacy will live on — in Melissa, his children, his family, his friends, the healthcare friends who stood beside him, and in everyone whose life he touched.

Rockey Strong to the very end.

A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Resurrection Life, 5100 Ivanrest Ave. SW, Grandville, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. The family will also receive relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday, September 14, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville.

Carl Slotman

March 6, 1953-September 9, 2026

Carl Slotman, age 73, of Bentheim, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathie, his children and grandchildren, Cory and Ellen Slotman (Jack, Cole, Luke, and Reid), Marcy and Eric Yonker (Reese, and Cambry), Michael and Erin Slotman (Ava, Emma, and Lucy); his mother, Frances Slotman; his brother, Don and Mary Slotman; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gloria and Jake Toering, Al and Mary Berens, Wanda Schout and Gene Bobeldyk, Linda and Wayne Harmsen, and Duane and Sue Berens.

Carl was preceded in death by his father, Paul Slotman; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Johanna Berens; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Schout.

Carl graduated from Hamilton High School and Michigan State University. He proudly served in the Air National Guard for six years. Carl married Kathie Berens, and they raised their family in the Bentheim area and were members of Bentheim Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, and cadet leader. In 1997, he started his own business, Long Drive Farm Trucking. Carl found the most joy in watching his grandkids in their sports and activities, family vacations, and riding cycles and trips with dear friends.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at Bentheim Reformed Church, 3997 38th St., Hamilton. The funeral service to honor the life of Carl will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2026, also at the church. Interment will be in Bentheim Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland.

John "Smo" Smolenski

May 13, 1953-September 7, 2026

John Joseph Smolenski, “Smo,” 73, filled with faith, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2026.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mildred Smolenski; his sisters, Janet Irene and Joanne Mary Smolenski; and his in-laws, Thomas and Rae Anne Bednarek.
 
John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sue Anne Smolenski; his sons and daughter-in-law, Matt Smolenski (girlfriend, Shelby Green) and daughter, Liv; Tim and Kellie Smolenski and their children, Nolan and Kennedy Smolenski; his brother, Thomas William Smolenski; his sister, Susan Mary Smolenski; sister and brothers-in-law, Frank and Kary Cinder, Jill Summit, Phil and Maureen Bednarek; several nieces and nephews; close long time friend, Wayne Ritchie; Highland Park friends; the “Jetty Rats,” Ocean Village, and many close friends.
 
John had a deep and committed love of his family. He was especially proud of his two sons — father extraordinaire. He referred to his daughter-in-law, Kellie, as “perfect” — “Best DIL in the world.”
 
The grandchildren lit up his life. He was especially close to them. He supported their every effort, whether it be school or sports. 
 
John was a busy man and adventurous soul. John had a passion for many things.  He had a 37-year career at AAA of Michigan. John was president and volunteered at CheapStacks Bookstore at Loutit Library. He was a voracious reader. He wanted everyone to have access to inexpensive books.
 
He loved cars and the water — founder of Bob’s Yacht Club, avid surfer, the beach, the Ft. Pierce Jetty, and the Grand Haven pier. He had a passion for kayaking, especially the Indian River in Florida. 
 
The Photogenic Grand Haven Facebook page, now followed by 14K members. He had a knack for catching the sunrises and sunsets just at the right moment.
 
Music was special to John. He knew every band and the lyrics to their songs, especially Motown, Rock, and English Rock. 
 
John loved the people he met. He brought joy and laughter to everyone. You couldn’t talk to John and not know his sense of humor.
 
John loved life.

Cassondra "Cassie" A. Swinehart

July 5, 1968-August 18, 2026

Cassondra "Cassie" Ann Swinehart, age 58, of Grand Haven, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, leaving behind family and friends who will remember her for her bright spirit, laughter, and ability to bring fun wherever she went.

She was born on July 5, 1968, to Joann Russo and the late Daniel Swinehart, in Grand Haven.

Cassie graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1987. She was a fun-loving, positive person who loved to laugh and enjoyed life's simple pleasures. Cassie especially loved playing games and spending time at the casino. Her laughter and personality will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Cassie shared a particularly special bond with her late twin sister, April Rodgers. The two of them were two peas in a pod, sharing a connection and a lifetime of memories that only twins can understand. Though April preceded her in death, the love and bond they shared will remain a cherished part of Cassondra's story. Cassie did not have children of her own, but she was a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

Cassondra is survived by her mother, Joann Loman; her stepfather, Jim Loman; her sisters, Gina Hardin, Leslie (Matthew) Thompson, Melody (Brian) DeJohn, and Michelle DeJohn; her brother, Stephen Swinehart; her brother-in-law, Rick Rodgers, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister, April Rodgers; her biological father, Daniel Swinehart; and her stepfather, Eugene White.

Cassondra will be remembered for her positivity, her love of laughter and games, and the joy she brought to the people around her. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will miss her dearly.

Connor Zachary Weaver

August 20, 2009-September 6, 2026

Connor Zachary Weaver, 17, of West Olive, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Connor was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2025, and he fought through treatments all of 2025. Connor rang the bell cancer-free in December of 2025. His cancer was found to have returned on August 5, 2026. Connor received his Make-A-Wish gift in April. It was a blessed and profound experience for Connor and his family.

Connor was born August 20, 2009, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is the oldest of the three children of Justin and Sara (Barendse) Weaver. Connor liked mowing grass. He mowed the family lawn, mowed for his grandparents, and anyone else who needed their grass cut. Connor also enjoyed many science and engineering toys, and especially Lego projects. Connor and the Weaver family attend Life Church Grand Haven.

Connor is survived by his parents, Justin and Sara Weaver; his sisters, Ella and Aliya; grandparents, Steve and Donna Barendse, Scott and Carlene Weaver; great-grandparents Neil and Elaine Jacobsen; aunts, uncles, and cousins: Darrin and Rachelle Geurink (Jacob, Eli), Jonathan and Amy Barendse (Sebastian).

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at Life Church Grand Haven, 1000 Waverly Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Visitation will be 5-p.m. on Thursday, at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland MI 49464. Interment will be in Olive Township Cemetery. Chad Eugene Zylstra

January 25, 1968-September 3, 2026

In loving memory of Chad Eugene Zylstra.

He was an amazing husband, dad, and papa. He was the kind of man who would give anyone the shirt off his back if they needed help. He had a big heart and was always willing to lend a hand. At the same time, he was never one to hold back if you pissed him off — he would make sure you knew it.

He loved working as a mechanic and took great pride in helping family, friends, and anyone who needed a hand with their vehicle. He spent many years doing that before moving to factory work at Blackmer, until his back problem forced him to retire. Even after retiring, his love for working on cars and helping others remained a big part of who he was.

Family was everything to him, from camping to yearly vacations.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kim; children, Nicole Desero and Jon Zylstra; grandchildren, Kyle, Austin, Bailee, Skylee, Declan, Gabe; brother, Matt (Jen) Zylstra; sister, Denise (Dan) Reynolds; sisters-in-law, Kelly (Larry) Barton, and Karrie (Jeff) Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers; in-laws; and grandson, Ethan. He will be deeply missed by all those lucky enough to have known him. Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our husband, dad, and papa.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. Funeral services will be at noon on Friday, September 11, at Cook Memorial Chapel, with visitation from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service.
