Lee Edward Alman

June 2, 1947-September 13, 2026

It is with both sadness and gratitude that we announce the passing of Lee Edward Alman, age 79, who left this world peacefully at his home on September 13, 2026.

Born on June 2, 1947, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to Paul and Bonnie (Sandel) Alman, Lee lived a life full of love, adventure, and service. A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he honorably served for four years, including a deployment in Vietnam where he was recognized as an excellent marksman and earned a Purple Heart.

Lee married the love of his life, Maxine Dazey, on October 22, 1966, and together they raised two children, Sheila and Anthony. After Maxine's passing in 1999, Lee found love again with Gail Dolbow Rezny, marrying her on June 4, 2018. Lee and Gail enjoyed a beautiful life together, filled with joy and cherished trips, especially to Reno for Keno, where laughter and love were abundant. During Lee's last year, Gail's devoted care brought him comfort and companionship.

Known for his skill as a sheet metal journeyman, Lee dedicated 23 years to his craft, working first at Bastian-Blessing and then at Haworth in Holland, Michigan. Beyond work, he was a passionate outdoorsman who never missed a deer hunting season and organized numerous fish fries at the Grand Haven VFW, sharing his love of fishing with friends and family.

Lee's generosity knew no bounds. He had a compassionate heart and was always ready to lend a helping hand and financial assistance, often moved to tears by the challenges faced by others. His support of St. Jude's Children's Hospital exemplified his commitment to making the world a better place.

A celebration of Lee's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter, and joy in remembrance of a remarkable man who touched so many lives. Interment will take place at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery, where Lee will rest.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail Alman, and son, Anthony Alman. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine; daughter, Sheila Arnold; and brothers, Tom and Brad Alman.

Elida Hernandez Almanza

November 15, 1934-September 10, 2026

Elida Hernandez Almanza, 91, was born in Mercedes, Texas, on November 15, 1934, and passed away on September 10, 2026.

Born to Genaro Sanchez and Lucia (Zamora) Sanchez. Elida was one of eight children and grew up in Mercedes, Texas, where family and responsibility shaped the earliest years of her life. Called at a young age to help support her family and younger siblings, she left school early to pick produce in the fields of California in the spring and summer.

When her family stopped the seasonal work in California, she proudly landed a job as a cashier, then bookkeeper, at Hanshaw’s Drug Store in Mercedes. Elida was extremely proud of her role at Hanshaw's and cherished the work she did there.

As a teen, Elida met Tony Almanza, who was in the Navy at the time. Their friendship grew into a lasting courtship, and, in 1956, they were married. Soon after, they began their family and welcomed four daughters.

They raised their girls in Mercedes before moving to Toledo, Ohio, where Elida worked at various organizations including The Guadalupe Center and Planned Parenthood. In 1974, the family moved back to Mercedes and Elida began working at the Mercedes Independent School District (MISD). She often talked about the great friendships she made while working there and how much she enjoyed the work.

In 1979, Elida decided to move to Michigan to join her daughters. With only a sixth-grade education, she earned her GED and subsequently enrolled at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). One of her fondest memories was going to college at the same time as her two youngest daughters. Elida was at Eastern Michigan University, Dalia at Michigan State University, and Blanca at the University of Michigan. She loved when they traveled to see each other and study together on weekends. After her time at EMU, she became Executive Director at Michigan Economics for Human Development (MEHD), a nonprofit that served the Latino community. In 1984, she ran for a seat on the Holland Public Schools Board of Education.

After her time in Michigan, Elida decided to return to Mercedes to spend time with her mother. She often said that enjoying this time with her mom was extremely special to her. They would sit on the porch swing, talk with the neighbors, drink her mom's very sweet iced tea, have lunch together every day, and play their favorite games such as “Yahtzee" and “Aggravation.”

While in Texas, she met Ruben Hernandez, a proud Marine. They were married on January 21, 1994. They were happily married for 28 years. They both loved family, friendships and travel. They hosted many gatherings and enjoyed taking friends to South Padre Island for seafood and drinks at Claytons on the beach.

Some of their travel highlights included trips to Washington D.C., New York City, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cancun, and the list goes on. Two of Elida's most memorable trips were her trip to Rome with her sisters, where she was able to shake the hand of Pope John Paul II. She heard him sing her favorite hymn, “Pescador de Hombres (Fisher of Men), in Spanish! Her second trip of a lifetime was when she visited the Holy Land in 2006. Central to Elida’s life was her family and her faith. She was a loving grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic and volunteered at her church. She participated in religious retreats and became a Guadalupana at St. Francis de Sales Church in Holland. Elida spent her final years in Holland with her daughter Rose.

She was known as a woman of strength, courage, style and spirit—forthright and loyal, quick in wit and generous in love. Many will remember her friendship and their personal connection. Her loss will be felt by all who loved her, and by the many whose lives were made better through her example.

Elida was preceded in death by her father, Genaro Sanchez; her mother, Lucia (Zamora) Sanchez; her brothers, Gilbert Sanchez and Joe Sanchez; her sisters, Lydia De Hoyos, Maria Fletcher, and Janie Sanchez Solano; and her daughter, Diana Almanza.

Elida is survived by her sister, Dr. Dora Dominguez; her brother, Tony Sanchez; her daughters, Rose Hernandez, Dalia (Ron) Almanza Smith, and Blanca (Becky Ross) Almanza; her grandchildren, Aaron Hernandez, Julian Hernandez, Philip Speer, Anna Edfors Van Oss, and Kristen Edfors; her great-grandchildren, Santi Hernandez, Beni Hernandez, Maite Hernandez, Lucia Speer, and Ella Speer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at Our Lady of the Lake, 480 152nd Ave., Holland, Michigan 49424, on October 1, 2026.

Matthew E. Dalman

May 4, 1995-September 14, 2026

Matthew E. Dalman, age 31, was called home to be with Jesus in the early morning hours of Monday, September 14, 2026.

Born May 4, 1995, Matt was a true "Gift of God." Matt's passion for life was a light to those around him. He enjoyed taking family vacations, going to the races and car shows, fishing, gaming, and talking about just about anything. During the summers, Matt would look forward to going to Camp Sunshine, participating in the talent show where he would share his love of music and singing.

Matt enjoyed going to Compassionate Heart, where he was able to hang out with friends and share about the most recent video game he was playing. Matt loved staying active, walking his dog Shelby, taking bike rides with his family and competing in Special Olympics as an athlete in bowling, track, softball, and volleyball. Matt volunteered at the Critter Barn. His bright smile, full belly laughter, and giant bear hugs are treasured memories to those who knew Matt. Somewhere up in heaven he is shining his light on all of us.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wayne and Jackie Glass; and grandmother, Shirley Dalman.

He is survived by his parents Eric and Julie (Glass) Dalman; sister, Morgan Dalman; brother, Tyler (Kenzie) Dalman; sister, Kathryn (Brian) Kingsley; nephew, Cooper Dalman; nephew, Benjamin Kingsley, and niece, Kaylee Kingsley.

Visitation with the family is 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland, MI 49423.

Judith Ann Deck

September 26, 1942-September 13, 2026

Judith Deck, age 83, beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Phyllis Burrell, and sister, Patsy Hice.

She is survived by her brother, Ben (Debbie) Burrell; sister, Dorothy (Mike) Dzierzyc; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind two dear friends, Merete Penick and Lynn Dee.

Judy was born in Detroit, Michigan, and later moved to Chicago, where she resided for many years. After training as a legal secretary, she followed her dream and put her natural artistic talents to use working in advertising. She traveled the world with family and friends, loved a good laugh, a story well-told and being with those she held dear.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Rivertown Ridge – Memory Unit for the wonderful care given to Judy.

William Giller

September 1, 1952-September 11, 2026

William (Bill) Giller, 74, of Saugatuck, passed away on September 11, 2026, following a brief illness. He was a hardworking, fun-loving, curious, and kind man.

Bill was born around Chicago, Illinois, but developed a lifelong love for the Saugatuck area from childhood vacations. He moved to Saugatuck immediately after graduating from Rockford College and began his career at Tower Marine, where he worked for 43 years doing a job he loved. Bill had a perpetual love of being on the water. Boating, especially sailing, was something that gave him much happiness, whether it was on Lake Michigan, the Kalamazoo River, or the Florida Keys. He also loved music, nature, and reading, and had a boundless curiosity. Bill found great joy in getting together with friends for any reason.

Bill is survived by his wife, Dena (Cannady) Giller; his mother-in-law, Jessie Cannady; and brother-in-law, Vaughn (Janie) Cannady. He also has two sisters, Gayle Anning and Cherie Giller (Phil Bryant), three nephews and three nieces, several great-nieces and nephews, as well as many loving friends and his beloved dog, Mya. He will be greatly missed by everyone.

Michael John Hanophy

May 10, 1949-September 11, 2026

Michael "Mike" John Hanophy, age 77, of Grand Haven, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2026.

He was born on May 10, 1949, in Poughkeepsie, New York, to the late John and Florence (Gilday) Hanophy. Mike married Pamela Goven on November 3, 2012, in Muskegon.

Mike attended St. Francis Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio, and later graduated from the University of Toledo. He dedicated 30 years of his career to the field of IT, working as a senior systems analyst for IBM before retiring from the IT department at Munson Medical Center. He also proudly served his country for six years in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Above all, Mike was a devoted family man who treasured the time he shared with his children and grandchildren. He and his wife, Pam, attended First Lutheran Church in North Muskegon, where they worshiped together for many years. Mike had a generous spirit and enjoyed giving back to his community. He volunteered with READ Muskegon and was involved with First Tee-West Michigan, helping young people build strength of character and empowering them through the game of golf.

In his younger years, Mike enjoyed playing baseball, and later in life, he found great pleasure on the golf course. Whether spending time with family, pursuing his favorite hobbies, or simply enjoying the everyday moments that made life special, Mike brought warmth and dedication to all that he did. His love of family, community, and the simple joys of life will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Mike will be forever remembered and missed by his loving wife, Pam; daughters, Casey Crayne, Jenny Richards, Jamie (Michael) Philibin, and Kelly Goven; sons, Michael (Kim) Hanophy, Chris (Amy) Hanophy, Nicholas (Kelly) Hanophy, and David (Bryenne) Goven; 19 grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wendy (Brian) Hanophy; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Hanophy.

The celebration of life for Mike will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at First Lutheran Church of North Muskegon, with Pastor Bill Uetricht officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Karen Jean Herman

Karen Jean Herman, age 83, peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord and savior on Friday, September 11, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Smith; mother, Maxine Smith; and sister, Marlene Koetsier.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn Herman; daughter, Susan (Gordon) Toering; son, Robert (Lori) Herman; grandchildren, Stephanie Nichols (Tyler), Sarah Holey (Jon), Ryan Toering (Lauren), Zachary Toering, Stacie Toering, Kaylee Herman, Jordan Herman, Joshua Herman; and great-grandchildren, Levi Nichols, Riley Nichols, Greyson Nichols, Aiden Holey, Micah Holey, and Abram Toering.

Karen was a devoted wife and was married for over 63 years to her high school sweetheart, Lynn. She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and received her teaching degree from Michigan State University. She enjoyed teaching first and second grade for many years at Northview. She absolutely loved working with children and building relationships with each of them and their families.

Karen found joy in making lifelong memories with family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought so much happiness and laughter to her life. She had a huge heart and was always committed to helping others by making them feel loved and cared for. She enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, horseback riding, sewing, flower arranging, and playing games. She also loved singing - she found comfort in hymns, especially during the last few years of her life.

It was important to Karen to be a part of her grandkids' childhood, including taking the time to create fun crafts, game nights, and holiday parties. The most memorable event she planned was the annual construction/decorating of gingerbread houses with her husband and grandkids, where they took over the dining room table for hours with creativity and laughter. Spending time with family and friends meant so much to her.

Visitation will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026, at Cook Memorial Chapel, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Diana Lee Lewis

Diana Lee Lewis, age 70, of Grand Haven, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital.

She was born on August 21, 1956, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, to the late James (McClelan) and Alice (Burgess) Hartranft. Diana married James Lewis on October 25, 1975, in Wheaton, Illinois.

Diana graduated from Glenbard West High School and later received her nursing degree from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. She worked as an RN for her entire career in various hospitals in medical-surgical and hospice. She had a booth with The Porch Company in Muskegon in her retirement.

Diana was a member of All Shores Wesleyan Church in Spring Lake for many years, and she enjoyed reselling, thrifting, and going to estate sales. She was also a great cook who enjoyed baking, sewing, and traveling with friends.

Diana is lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her loving husband of 50 years, James; her daughter, Emily Lewis (significant other, Cory Brown); her son, Michael Tidel-Lewis; two grandchildren, Jimmy Charmelo and Charlotte Brown; two sisters, Pam (Scott) McCorkle and Christine Thompson; brother, Dan (Krista) Hartranft; sister-in-law, Jackie Pippel; and brother-in-law, Chuck (Sally) Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Amy Lewis; brother, Jim Hartranft; and sister, Ginny (Rudy) Hallmer.

William Taylor Martinez

William Martinez, age 23, of Zeeland, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

William graduated from West Ottawa High School in 2021 and embraced various roles at Nature's Market, Taco Bell, and Simpatico Coffee. Most recently, he found his niche at LG Chemical.

William had an appreciation for life's finer things, with a particular love for cars. He was always up for an adventure, and his infectious sense of humor enriched countless conversations wherever he went. William was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his mother, April Maher; father, Matthew Martinez; brother, Alexander; brother, Ryan; and sister, Lillian; grandparents, Rebecca and John McConville, Roy and Angela Martinez; as well as aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends.

Jacob 'Jaap' Renger de Blecourt

November 26, 1930-September 12, 2026

Jaap de Blecourt, a distinguished horticulturist and longtime Holland, Michigan, resident, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2026, at the age of 95. He was born on November 26, 1930, in Garnwaard, Netherlands.

Jaap devoted his life to horticulture, a profession that reflected his deep appreciation for nature, beauty, and craftsmanship. His education and training took him across Europe, earning degrees in horticulture and floriculture in the Netherlands, France, and England, followed by an internship in Switzerland. His international education and experience would become the foundation of a remarkable career.

After coming to the United States in 1957, Jaap served as Head Gardener at the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, where he helped establish and care for the hotel's renowned gardens, grounds, and golf course. He later became the original manager of Windmill Island Gardens in Holland, Michigan, and for 30-plus years contributed his knowledge and expertise to the development of one of the city's most treasured attractions.

Jaap made Holland his home and remained closely connected to the work he loved throughout his life. Even into his later years, he could often be found outdoors gardening or caring for his lawn. Tending plants and maintaining a beautiful landscape were not simply hobbies for Jaap — they were a lifelong expression of who he was.

He also treasured the simple pleasures of life. Jaap looked forward to spending time with his family and friends, enjoying meals at local restaurants, and sharing good company. In the evenings, he could most often be found with a book in hand. He was an avid reader and, famously, had little use for television.

Jaap was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlotte Kay de Blecourt, who passed away on December 14, 2000. Jaap and Charlotte were married for 40 years. After her passing, he traveled the world, including taking each of his three children on a dream vacation and making new friends wherever he went.

He is survived by his children, Lillian de Blecourt; Jahn (Kim) de Blecourt; and Ann (Ken) Waker; and his grandchildren, Jacey de Blecourt, Emma Waker, Alex Waker, and Jacob de Blecourt.

Jaap will be remembered for his extraordinary knowledge and dedication to horticulture, his love of the outdoors, his appreciation for a good book and good food, and, most importantly, his devotion to his family and friends.

Jaap's hands spent a lifetime cultivating beauty. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to grow in the people and places he touched.

An evening visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on September 25, 2026, at Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 W. 32nd St., Holland, Michigan.

A funeral service, officiated by Sam Butler, will take place at 1 p.m. September 26, 2026, at Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 W. 32nd St., Holland, Michigan.

Susan Mary Sisto

November 25, 1957-September 13, 2026

Susan Mary Sisto, age 68, of Grand Haven, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2026, at home.

She was born November 25, 1957, in Muskegon, Michigan, to James and Claudette (Sears) Rushcamp. Susan married John Anthony Sisto on September 22, 1984, at Samuel Lutheran Church in Muskegon.

Susan loved photography, especially nature; butterflies, birds, and animals were some of her favorites. She never missed an opportunity to photograph an old house or barn. Along with being a great mother and mother-in-law, she was a great sister to all her seven siblings, a wonderful wife, and friend. She was a fantastic grandmother to her grandchildren, whom she absolutely adored, and vice versa. 

Susan loved Jesus with all her heart and shared her faith boldly. Her love and compassion touched so many lives. Susan ministered in the inner city, where the neighborhood children affectionately called her "Momma." She and her husband, John, regularly blessed the elderly residents of the Hume Home with homemade food and desserts. Susan ministered at the mission, holding a deep heart for broken and abused women. She also cared deeply for young people struggling in life. She and John always opened their home to anyone in need.

Susan was a pillar of faith to her family. She was strong, prayerful, hilarious, and brought so much laughter and positivity. Susan was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Until we meet again.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sadie (Robert) Rogers; her son, James (Amber) Sisto; six grandchildren, Jonathan (Abbie Eppinga) Rogers, Ryan Rogers, Rocco Sisto, Vincent “Vinnie” Sisto, Cole Sotzen, and Elisha Croff; three sisters: Martha Rushcamp, Jackie Yacub, and Elizabeth (Tom) Kine; two brothers, James (Sue) Rushcamp and Matthew (Sharon) Rushcamp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Sisto; and her sister, Yvonne “Vonnie” Rushcamp.

Pauline Stepanek

Pauline Stepanek, 86, of Grand Haven, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026.

She was preceded in death by Warren Stepanek, her loving husband of 50 years; her parents, Frank and Margaret Merle; and her brother-in-law, Chuck Barbier.

She loved her family with all her heart and is survived by her children, Joel, Greg (Sally), and their children, Sarah and Alex (Brittany); her sister, Barbara Barbier; her brother, Frank Merle (Suzette); and nieces and nephews.

She was born and raised in Muskegon Heights. She graduated from Western Michigan University, where she earned her degree while raising two small children, while her husband was out of state for work. She loved to travel and attend the theater. She remained active with friends and clubs until her passing.
