OTTAWA COUNTY — Several local municipalities will participate this evening, Aug. 5, in a night of celebration, camaraderie and connection with law enforcement and community residents.

National Night Out events locally include communities gathering in the city of Holland and Holland Township, the city of Zeeland, Allendale and Georgetown Townships. Many events are organized by neighborhood groups with support from local law enforcement.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan DeVries said historically deputies get involved with the municipal events and deeply enjoy getting to know residents on another level.

“We are so grateful to be part of it,” DeVries said.

National Night Out is an annual event that strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Held on the first Tuesday of August in most places, it brings neighbors together through local events, like block parties and festivals, to create safer, more connected communities.

DeVries said this year his team will be focusing on water safety at the events they attend.

“We just love going to these events,” he said. “We just love it.”
