OTTAWA COUNTY — Ottawa County recently recognized two employees with its Exemplary Customer Service Award.

Deputy Evan Potter, of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, was nominated for his calm leadership and quick action during a high-risk medical emergency.

While working in Holland Township, Potter responded to a call involving a baby being delivered at home in a breech position, with medical assistance still several minutes away.

"Without hesitation, he responded to the scene in Zeeland and safely delivered a healthy baby girl. His calm under pressure, willingness to step in, and commitment to service made a meaningful difference for the mother and child. His nomination also highlighted the many ways he serves the community beyond emergency response, including simple acts of kindness that build trust and connection with residents," said Sheriff Eric DeBoer.

Tavia Renkema, of the County Clerk/Register of Deeds Office, was nominated for her compassion and professionalism while assisting a distressed customer who had been targeted by a jury-duty scam.

The customer had been threatened by someone impersonating law enforcement and coerced into sending money through a QR-code payment.

"Tavia immediately verified that no jury summons had been issued, gently informed the customer that she had been scammed, and guided her to a private space to help her regain composure. Seeing that the customer was overwhelmed, Tavia took the lead in contacting the sheriff’s office and ensuring the matter was escalated for follow-up. Her empathy, calm presence, and willingness to help made a difficult situation more manageable for someone in need," DeBoer said.

Initiated in 2012, Ottawa County's Customer Service Initiative strives to empower employees to solve problems, ensuring that every resident leaves an interaction feeling valued and respected.

The County’s Customer Service Award program celebrates employees who go beyond expectations while serving the public. By sharing these stories of exceptional customer service, the County highlights its commitment to a culture of excellence, where every interaction builds trust and demonstrates the positive impact of local government.
