PORT SHELDON TWP. — A 73-year-old man was hospitalized Thursday afternoon after being struck by a motorcycle while retrieving his mail along Lakeshore Drive, local authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Olive Shore Drive around 1 p.m. Aug. 13 following reports of a vehicle-pedestrian collision.

According to preliminary findings from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the elderly man had just collected his mail from the side of the road and was attempting to walk back across Lakeshore Drive when he stepped directly into the path of a northbound 2006 Harley-Davidson.

The motorcycle was operated by a 34-year-old Muskegon man, who suffered minor injuries in the crash. First responders transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital with injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation by local law enforcement.
