What does it mean to be gluten-free? 

A gluten-free diet eliminates foods containing gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. In the past 20 years, being gluten-free has become much more popular, as more people have made the choice for various health reasons. 

Finding restaurants and eateries that accommodate a gluten-free diet, however, can be a challenge, but Ottawa County boasts several.

Here's a list of restaurants in Ottawa County that are not only gluten-free but are tasty: 

• Porto Bello, Grand Haven: This restaurant is the perfect spot for not only great food but also great views. In the heart of Grand Haven Porto Bello is a classy cute spot perfect for a night on the town. Not only that but they serve gluten-free pasta (you just have to ask!) and a gluten-free cauliflower crust. They also have a flourless chocolate torte for anyone with a sweet tooth. 
• The Derby Tavern, Hudsonville: Derby Tavern is the perfect spot to visit if you're ever in Hudsonville. This restaurant has it all for gluten-free folks, with gluten-free buns for sandwiches and burgers, gluten-free fries (a rarity in the gluten free world) and gluten-free pizza. Each gluten-free item is marked clearly.
• One Eyed Pete’s, Coopersville: One Eyed Pete’s has all the good gluten free bites. Located at Coopersville Brewing Co., it has popular items like wings and chili that are gluten free. Not only that but they offer gluten free buns for an additional charge. 
• Anna’s House, Grand Haven and Holland: Any gluten free person knows that if it already says on the menu the gluten free options its almost guaranteed to be safe. Anna’s House does just that with gluten free options marked as well as gluten free option.This breakfast spot has it all with gluten free bread, pancakes, cinnamon roll and more. Not only that, but it's a chain restaurant so you can find an Anna's house wherever you go.
