HOLLAND — Hundreds of Ottawa County residents turned out en masse to celebrate Holland's annual Juneteenth celebration, marking the holiday with advocacy, education and fun.

A blend of "June" and "Nineteenth," the day commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation that effectively ended slavery in the United States.
Although the state of Michigan designated Juneteenth as a holiday in 2005, Holland has celebrated the milestone since 2000.

Hosted by the I AM Academy, the event featured live music, community speakers, food vendors, informational booths and family-friendly activities.
I AM Academy’s theme this year is “I AM H.O.P.E.,” which focuses on helping students see and achieve their goals, according to the group's website.
The Holland-based nonprofit organization works to empower Black and multiracial youth.

“I AM H.O.P.E” challenges us to reflect on the kind of love that uplifts communities, breaks down barriers, and gives voice to the unheard. It’s the type of love that sees potential in every young person, celebrates identity, and stands firm in justice and truth," the organization said.
