GRAND HAVEN — If you’re a fan of barbecue, margaritas and downtown Grand Haven, you’re in for a treat.

Smokey Jose’s, a restaurant previously operated on Mackinac Island, is expected to open within weeks in the former Copper Post building, 100 Washington Ave. The Copper Post closed on Jan. 1, 2024, after six years in business, due to a leasing disagreement.

Several restaurants have attempted long-term stability in that space, but for one reason or another, they shutter.

Grand Haven Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Chandi Pape said she’s hopeful that Smokey Jose’s will be a crowd pleaser and have a lasting footprint on the popular Washington Avenue strip.

“We are excited to have them here,” Pape said. “I think they are a good fit. I’ve seen the transition in that building, but Smokey Jose’s has a pre-established following from Mackinac Island, and I’m excited about that.”

Businessman and experienced restaurateur Jack Armstrong owns Smokey Jose's with partner and co-owner David Saenz, who served as general manager for the restaurant when it operated on Mackinac Island.

Pape said the owners are invested in the growth of Grand Haven.

“The owners seem interested in investing in Grand Haven in the bigger picture, not just with a restaurant in town.”

The owners are waiting on the approval of some permits yet, but everything seems on track for them to open at the end of May, Pape said.

According to Smokey Jose’s Facebook page, the cuisine is described as “a unique combination of tacos and tequila alongside BBQ and Bourbon.”

Menu items include sandwiches, wraps, salads, platters, tacos, and homemade sides like baked beans, coleslaw, waffle fries, mac and cheese and cornbread.
