GEORGETOWN TWP. — A multi-vehicle incident on westbound I-196 left a motorcyclist with significant injuries Thursday evening after loose cargo triggered a severe traffic backup.
Just after 6 p.m. on June 4, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office responded to a motorcycle vs. car crash on westbound I-196 just west of Kenowa Avenue.
A 39-year-old man from Elkhart, Indiana, was traveling westbound and towing a rented trailer with cargo. The cargo then came off the trailer and spilled onto the highway, causing traffic to back up.
In the left lane was a 42-year-old Walker man driving a Chevrolet Equinox that was traveling at a very low speed due to the backup. A Honda CBR motorcycle driven by a 25-year-old Hudsonville woman was also westbound in the left lane. The motorcyclist did not slow enough for the traffic backup and rear-ended the Chevrolet Equinox.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and suffered significant injuries. The Equinox driver and four passengers were not injured.
