Judith Ann Fischer
June 24, 1940-March 29, 2026
Judith Ann Fischer of Grand Haven, Michigan, a devoted and caring wife, loving and supportive mother, treasured grandmother and great-grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at the age of 85.
She was born in Grand Haven on June 24, 1940, to Dorothy (Buitenwert) and A. Paul Fochtman.
Judy spent countless hours throughout her childhood in Grand Haven and Oconto, Wisconsin, creating incredible memories with her six siblings. Their stories are many, and their love is deep. Judy graduated from Grand Haven Senior High School in 1958 and later attended Muskegon Community College.
On a summer day in 1957, Judy met Larry Fischer, a young man from Muskegon, as he cruised “The Oval” with friends. They were married on May 28, 1960. Together, they raised three children. Judy worked as a teacher’s aide for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, followed by years at Dunewood Pediatrics, First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven, and Bowen-Fischer Motors.
A woman of faith, unconditional love, and selfless compassion, Judy was beautiful inside and out. She was kind in spirit, gentle in heart, and full of enthusiasm and grace. She was known for her eminently caring character and her affectionate smile. Judy dedicated her life to her family, her friends, her faith community, and serving others. An endless source of comfort throughout her life, she used her gifts to provide care for many family members and friends.
As a mother, Judy was actively involved in her children’s activities, leading Cub Scouts and attending school events, concerts, and every one of her children’s athletic events. She baked Texas Sheet Cakes for the birthdays of members of the cross country team, and affectionately earned the name “Mother Fischer” for her kindhearted support of the team. Judy loved her family beyond measure, and especially cherished all of the precious moments she shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was everyone’s No. 1 cheerleader, and our adored Gigi!
With the heart of a passionate volunteer, Judy was a longtime member of the Memorial Day Association and chairperson of decorating graves of deceased veterans at Lake Forest Cemetery — a family-held role of over 100 years. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, and also a member of the Veterans Memorial Committee, and Post 28 American Legion Auxiliary, where she had served as Chaplain. Judy was a longstanding, very active member of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven. She served as an Elder, Deacon, Stephen Minister, committee chair, Circle member and leader, and was designated a Life Member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association.
Gatherings with her siblings and their spouses — taking cruises throughout the Caribbean and spending time in Arizona in the winter — were treasured times for Judy. Her adventurous spirit led her to travels in Ireland, Scotland, England, Mexico, and many places throughout Michigan and the United States.
Judy was a welcoming people-person who put others first, loved organizing events and get-togethers, was first to sign up for fun, and had the best laugh. She enjoyed many hours spent with her book club and craft and quilting groups. Planting beautiful gardens, running with friends, boating with family, providing Grandma Camp for her grandchildren, attending concerts with her brother, Bill, hosting parties, feeding the birds, and cheering on her favorite sports teams, especially the University of Michigan, made her heart happy. She lived her life story, and she lived it well!
Judy is lovingly remembered, and dearly missed, by her children, Larry II (Kristin) Fischer of Vicksburg, Michigan, Melinda (Christopher) Mendels of Grand Haven, and Greg Fischer (Pat Muskovin), of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Lindsay (Dr. David) Arboleda, Aly (Ethan) Meyer, Nicholas (Morgan) Mendels, Cody (Emma) Fischer, Mycah Fischer (Eli Hartwig), and Alison (Nick) Staib; great-grandchildren, Marlowe, Macklin, and Merrick Meyer, Mason Fischer, and Camila Arboleda.
Judy is also survived by brothers, Bill Fochtman and Edward Brandel; sisters, Madelyn (Jack) Bauman, Marian Cox and Bobbi Ely; brother-in-law, Bruce Williams; sisters-in-law, Anita Fischer and Margarete Fochtman, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 62 years, Larry; brother, Paul Fochtman; sisters-in-law, Beverly Fochtman, Linda Brandel, Joyce Witt and Jean Williams; and brothers-in-law, Ken Ely, David Cox, Jerry Fischer, and Melvin Witt.
Judy leaves her family the enduring gifts of a legacy of love, a smile to remember, and a lifetime of memories to hold dear.
A private family service and interment will take place at Lake Forest Cemetery. A celebration of Judy’s life will be 1-3 p.m. at Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Central Park Place in Grand Haven.
Thank you to Waterford Place in Jenison for providing Judy with the very best, highly skilled, and loving care, and to Kathy and the Faith Hospice team for their expertise and compassion.
Memorial contributions in Judy’s honor may be made to Waterford Place-Sunset Senior Communities Resident Benevolence Fund.

Elaine Mildred Teall
December 12, 1947-March 31, 2026
Elaine Teall died on March 31, 2026, of pancreatic cancer, and the world is a darker and emptier place without her.
After raising three children, teaching for 42 years, caring for her mother and then her husband as their health declined, she had earned the right to simply enjoy her life on her own terms for a few years — but, as it does for so many people, cancer stole that from her.
Elaine was born in Freeport, New York, on December 12, 1947, to Margaret and Edwin Carlin. She had an older brother, Eddie, who died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 30, and two younger sisters, Cynthia and Dorothy. Her parents claimed that she started out as an impossibly stubborn child, but they managed to turn her into a perfect young lady.
As a teenager, Elaine attended Moravian Academy in Pennsylvania and then headed to Hope College (Class of 1969). Her parents hoped she would get her degree and return home to New York; Elaine dreamed of becoming an airline stewardess and traveling the world. Neither happened — instead, she met and married Gary Teall, the love of her life and her total opposite in almost every way, and settled down in Holland. She started teaching in Coopersville Area Public Schools, where she would remain for the next 42 years. Her fellow teachers became lifelong friends, and she became the favorite teacher of literal generations of middle school students. Elaine and Gary raised three children, Eric, Maggie, and Kathy. Elaine made teaching all day and parenting all night look so easy that her children all became teachers and parents as well — and only then did they realize how positively heroic their mom was.
At age 40, while her children were still very young, Elaine was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She suffered through a year of brutal treatments, which the doctors warned her would each take a year off of her life, but she persisted. Nonetheless, she was diagnosed with a relapse of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2004 and pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2025.
In her retirement, Elaine attended nearly every recital, concert, and athletic event her eight grandchildren (Alissa, Graham, Robbie, Lila, Grayson, Charlotte, Blake, and Kai) participated in, and swooped in to save the day any time her three adult children needed her. She volunteered in many capacities at First United Methodist Church of Holland, where she was a faithful and lifelong member, spent time with her Coopersville retiree friends, and kept fit and made wonderful new “Zumba friends” at Evergreen Commons. These friends rallied around her over the past year, driving her to treatments, rushing her to the emergency room, bringing her meals, and keeping her company until the very end.
Elaine loved waterparks, swimming in the ocean, Les Misérables, and mystery novels. She traveled to Japan, Alaska, Portugal, Austria, and England. She was calm and refined in a rowdy family — when it was her turn to choose what tape (yes, tape) to listen to on family road trips, she often chose thirty minutes of silence. She was Michigan Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2010. She gave great advice. She was fiercely loyal. Her patience and kindness were legendary. No obituary could adequately capture the life she led and the gaping hole that is now in the hearts of those who loved her.
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Edwin Carlin, her brother Eddie Carlin, and her husband, Gary Teall.
She is survived by her sisters, Cynthia Drake and Dorothy Carbone, her lifelong friend Mary Miller, her three children and their spouses: Eric Teall (Jenni), Maggie Teall (Mark Beaver), and Kathy Teall (Nick Vartanian), and eight grandchildren: Alissa and Robbie Teall, Graham, Lila, and Charlotte Beaver, and Grayson, Blake, and Kai Vartanian, and countless others whose lives she touched in her 78 years on Earth.
A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. on April 24 at First United Methodist Church in Holland. In lieu of flowers, donations to Faith Hospice or The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research are welcome.
