Terence "Terry" Edward Cowan
August 1, 1943-December 3, 2025
Terence "Terry" Edward Cowan, age 82, of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at home.
He was born on August 1, 1943, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Edward and Marion (Johnson) Cowan. Terry married Linda Buckner on January 28, 1988, in Grand Haven.
A lifetime can be measured in a million different ways: the number of breaths we take, the beats of a heart, the deeds we've done, fleeting conversations we have with strangers standing in line at the grocery store, the way we make people feel when we're not around. Some people navigate their lifetime quietly, simply, and gently. They grace us with their presence like a soft nudge, a subtle kindness; the kind of person who could be a cozy blanket on a winter day. Terry Cowan was rarely one of those people. Instead, he was a hurricane of a man. Wherever he went, he left raucous laughter in his wake. Where some people are a candle, Terry was a bonfire. Too full of vim and vigor to be contained, he was mischief incarnate, forever chasing the next bit without a single moment of hesitation.
As a young man, Terry did what many other young men were doing at his age: he enlisted with the United States Air Force, where he would become an aircraft mechanic. He believed in the American Dream and was fiercely proud of his service to his country, having been in active duty from 1961 to 1965, during the Vietnam War.
Once Terry returned to start living his own dream, he made sure he didn't waste a second of it. Every opportunity was approached with curiosity, a can-do attitude, and an engineer's affinity for taking things apart and putting them back together. Nothing was beyond his aspiration. He learned to do autobody work; every aspect of construction; large-scale gardening, hunting, and fishing; and in the midst of it all, he also learned how to be a husband and a father.
Terry moved back to Grand Haven in 1967, after his first daughter was born. He would raise his family here, where both of his daughters would also learn to do their own vehicle maintenance, to change a tire, to catch a fish or hunt deer, and to be good stewards of their community through acts of service.
Whether Terry was stomping around the garden in his iconic cowboy boots and timeless handlebar mustache, or doing a crossword puzzle with a John Wayne movie playing in the background, time spent relaxing was rarely time spent idle.
As with many who are bitten by the urge to wander young in life, Terry never lost his adventurous spirit. He and his wife took many road trips across the country and even took an RV to Alaska with his mother-in-law and grandparents-in-law. Later, he found a home away from home on St. George Island, Florida, where he would spend many winters on the sunny Gulf Shore, fishing pole in hand, making friends with anyone fortunate enough to walk past. Terry was someone people found themselves drawn to, and these chance Gulf-side meetings became the basis for many lifelong friendships.
If we commit ourselves to learning from those who came before us, let us all be a little more like Terry. Pick up a saw, drive across the country, spit your teeth out at a toddler, tell a story for the 57th time, greet a stranger like a long-lost friend, pierce your ear because it's funny, help your neighbor because it's the right thing to do.
Even though he isn't here to see his legacy in action, he can live on in each of us, striving to be the best version of ourselves, not only to those we know, but to those we don't know and those whom we might come to know. After all, every moment is an opportunity begging to be seized. Toodle-oo, sayonara, ta-ta for now, Terry. The next crossword is for you.
Terry will be forever remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 37 years, Linda; his three daughters: Chris (John) Helder, Tina (Bob) Bunker, and Catherine (William) Hegedus; six grandchildren: Britney Helder, AJ (Logan) Bunker, Michael (Allie) Hegedus, Dylan Hegedus, Meranda (Justin) Szymanski, and Lauryn Bunker; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers: Paul (Linda) Cowan, Robin (Annette) Cowan, and Timothy (Susan) Cowan; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Lois and Wesley Buckner, and many in-laws.
In accordance with Terry's wishes, there will be no services held.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or the American Cancer Society of Michigan.

Bradley "Brad" Thomas Fritz
May 25, 1970-December 22, 2025
Bradley “Brad” Thomas Fritz, age 55, of Spring Lake, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, December 22, 2025.
He was born on May 25, 1970, in Pontiac, Michigan, to William and Claire (Roussel) Fritz. Brad began dating Kathryn “Kathy” McLain on February 13, 2014, and they were married in June of 2022.
Brad graduated from high school and went on to graduate with his bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University, where Kathy attended at the same time, but they never met. He spent the majority of his career working for Porter Corp. in Holland, developing rep networks across the country for architectural steel structures. To grow his network further, Brad obtained his Associate DBIA with the Design Build Institute of America in 2024. He worked and enjoyed bringing the pinnacle steel structure for the Lynn Sherwood Waterfront Stadium in Grand Haven to the community. He was a member of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28 (SAL), where he loved to go and socialize with his crew.
Brad was a no-duck Jeep owner who enjoyed riding with the top down in the summer, sitting on his deck at home with his wife, Kathy, and going out for pizza at Clover Bar. Music was Brad’s passion, and you could almost always find him streaming something; he especially loved the Foo Fighters, The MTV Unplugged Nirvana Set from 1993, Grateful Dead, and Zach Brown Band. He loved to boast that while attending Ferris State, he was a D.J. at the Alibi Bar.
Brad was the most honest person you would ever meet, and you always knew where you stood with him. His spirit and faith were the driving forces in his life. His best ability was to help others see the good within themselves and to never take no for an answer. He never believed in an easy path but was always willing to take a bumpy road if it was the right way and lead the way fearlessly. Brad did not understand how to be in a room without making people laugh with his quick wit and humor and by night's end at any event, he had made contact with everyone in attendance.
Brad’s greatest accomplishment of life was being a “self-proclaimed girl-dad” to his three daughters, Abby, Emma, and Lexi. He was present in every aspect of their life, whether it was being their coach for soccer, becoming the PTA president of every school the girls attended to keep the beloved “Buc Blasters” to their standards, such as finding room in the school budget for a mechanical bull, taking them to Grand Rapids Griffins games, driving to school in the jeep with the top down beginning in March, and so much more that cannot be put into words. Brad instilled in his girls to live life every day like it's your last, to fear nothing, and to chase their dreams, just as he did.
Family was of utmost importance, and every year this blended family would get together for the Forced Family Fun Weekend, aka FFF, which he always looked forward to. He discovered his true calling in being “Pops” to his grandson, Scott. The family even extended to the dog, “The Good Reverend” (Rev), and his former dogs: Natty, Goose, and Max. Brad adored, cherished, and reveled in the life he lived and considered himself to be blessed.
Brad will forever be remembered and deeply missed by his loving wife, Kathy; his children: Abby Fritz (significant other, Aaron Senor), Emma (Grant) Norris, Lexi (Connor) Herbert, and bonus kids Gavin (Taylor) Cobb, and Kylie Cobb; his much loved grandson, Scott Herbert; his mother, Claire Fritz; two sisters, Teresa (Dave) Dissett and Sherette (Bob) Mickles; brother, Billy (Dawn) Fritz; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Fritz, and uncle, Bruce Fritz.
A private celebration of Brad’s life will be held at a later date.
Donations can be made in honor of Brad to the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan or Pound Buddies Animal Shelter in Muskegon, Michigan.

Jack Johan Jansma
February 23, 1935-December 21, 2025
Jack Johan Jansma, age 90, of Coopersville, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, while his dear granddaughter Haleigh was holding his hand.
Jack J. was born to Jack and Mary (VanZytveld) Jansma on February 23, 1935.
He was predeceased by the mother of his children, Joan G. (VanderHeide) Jansma, his eldest daughter, JoAnn Dubridge and his sons, Jelte and J.D. Jansma.
Our beloved father is survived by children, Jane Hofstra (Norm Browe), Jennifer Sanborn (Chad), Judy Rau (Danny), James Jansma (Stacy), and Jessica Jansma (Mark Richard).
He is also survived by one sister, Harriet Jones (Gordon). Many nephews, nieces, family and friends share in our grief.
Jack started building houses with his father when he was still in high school, and as a young husband and father, Jansma Builders Inc. was how Gabrielle Hills, a neighborhood on the N.E. side of Grand Rapids and many other houses, including some in Kalamazoo, Michigan, originated. Eventually, he turned to commercial housing and built both Breton East Apartments and then Greentree Apartments, a Section 8 housing project for the elderly in Kentwood, Michigan. Dad believed in making his hobbies into how he made a living, and that’s how his fishing and hunting charter businesses came to be.
Captain Jack of the Flying Frisian plied the waters of Lake Michigan for years, always giving the “fishing report” for Andy Rent and Bruce Matthews of WOOD Radio. Wingshooting Adventures took Dad, his clients, colleagues, and dear friends to far-off places like Hungary, Mexico, Bolivia, and Scotland to hunt birds, the “Sport of Kings”. Since Dad never retired, he enjoyed returning to his roots and farming at his property near Coopersville. Just in the last few weeks, he was tickled pink to see two baby calves had dropped! He farmed corn, hay and the cattle with the loyal help of Chris Staup (a close friend of our brother J.D.) and his family.
Dad had so many special qualities! He was charismatic and when his children were asked in school what did their dad do for a living — the answer given was “talk on the phone!” He was musically gifted and could play any instrument that found its way into his hands: piano, banjo, ukelele, baritone and even the bass viol. He sang beautifully, adding his melodious voice to various church choirs over the years, including at his home church, First Presbyterian of Grand Haven. Dad had extraordinarily beautiful handwriting and anything written out in longhand looked like stylized calligraphy.
Despite the health problems that challenged Dad in these last three years, he religiously hosted his Monday night suppers with a close-knit set of buddies, which always included his beloved grandson, Steve Ophoff. He also cherished his Thursday night suppers with Carole (the “flower lady”) as well as his weekend breakfasts with his friend Jerry. He loved to entertain and his annual Christmas Tree Trimming party was a festive event in the community for years. The baby grand piano he bought for our mother when they were young and could barely afford it is now silent.
Not long before he died, he told us that he dreamed about our mother, Joan G., and he said that he had seen her so clearly in the dream, smiling at him. When he asked, “Is it possible that she is my angel?” the answer we gave was a resounding “Yes”! He has now gone home to find her.
A service in celebration of Jack’s life will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 28, at the VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services in Grand Haven, with the Rev. Dr. Troy Hauser Brydon officiating. Military honors will be accorded to Jack under the auspices of the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post #28 Honor Guard.
Visitation will take place at VanZantwick Chapel one hour prior to services. Private interment will be at Oakgrove Cemetery in Grand Rapids at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Calvin Alumni Choir (Calvin Alumni Choir Giving Page), the Wounded Warrior Project (Wounded Warrior Project ) or Mel Trotter Ministries of Grand Rapids (Mel Trotter Ministries). Arrangements by the VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at sytsemafh.com.

Ronald Robert Richards
March 27, 1953-December 9, 2025
“It’s All About the Journey, Kiddo.”
Ronald “Ron” Richards, born in 1953, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy rich in love, adventure, and unforgettable stories.
A private man who placed his family above all else (Ron’s favorite saying internal to the family is “it’s all about the team, kiddo”), Ron lived his life with the philosophy that experiences far outweighed material possessions. He cherished the love, camaraderie, and tales woven from shared moments, often reminding his sons, “It’s all about the journey, kiddo.” Ron approached life as if it were a book in the making, ensuring no chapter lacked excitement.
From his early days as an aggressive, hard-driving young man with little patience, Ron evolved into a soft-spoken, well-lived grandfather whose repertoire of stories could captivate over a shared beer. He lived for those precious times spent with family, swapping tales, always with a smile and immense pride in the life he had built.
Ron’s passions reflected his zest for life: he loved snowmobiling through winter landscapes, skiing down slopes, playing tennis with vigor, and pursuing his dream of learning to sail. These pursuits were more than hobbies — they were avenues for creating the memories he held dear.
Ron is survived by his sisters, Debi Emmer and Susan Anderson; his brothers, Sheldon Richards and Michael Bailey; his sons, Justin Richards and Travis Richards; and three beautiful grandchildren, who were the light of his later years.
In honoring Ron’s spirit, we celebrate not an end, but the extraordinary journey he shared with those he loved.

After earning his master’s degree in education, he served in a variety of roles across the district, ultimately as principal of White Pines Intermediate School. A warm-spirited, kind-hearted leader, Mike had a remarkable ability to bring smiles to those around him and to make every student feel seen, valued, and supported. He believed deeply in putting kids first and worked tirelessly to build school communities rooted in belonging, joy, and care.

He was born on July 28, 1938, the sixth of seven children, to Adam and Mary (Duda) Siemion at their family home on Johnson Street in Robinson Township, Michigan.
Ed attended North Robinson School through eighth grade. Over the years, he did truck farming for Al Veenema, worked at MichiGreen Nursery, Challenge Porcelain, and retired from the Ottawa County Courthouse, where he worked as a custodian for many years.
Ed was a multi-talented man who sketched, painted, wrote poetry, composed songs, played various musical instruments, and even patented a couple of inventions. However, he was most well-known for his amazing, carved, wooden fish.
He enjoyed golfing and fishing with his many friends and participated in Church activities at St. Patrick's and St. Anthony's, where he was a member for many decades. With his extended family, he often took fishing and camping trips to the U.P. and Canada. In later years, he and his sister, Doris, took trips to casinos, festivals, and flea markets.
Ed was a generous man who spent years caring for his mother and helping elderly neighbors and friends with their chores and errands. While working at the courthouse, he often bought shoes and clothing for youthful offenders who needed such items.
Ed's final years were spent living at MediLodge at the Shore in Grand Haven, where staff described him as the "cool kid." He loved socializing with other residents, passing out cards on Valentine's Day, giving away candy at Halloween, attending church services, and playing BINGO!
Ed's family would like to thank the wonderful MediLodge staff for the amazing care he received there over the last three years, and they would also like to thank Corewell Health Hospice for the care they provided during his last week.

John Oren Snoek
October 8, 1938-November 29, 2025
John Oren Snoek, age 87, of Robinson Township, passed away at home on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
His wish was to have his last days at the home he loved so much. He was born on October 8, 1938, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to the late Clarence and Ana (Samargia) Snoek. John married Patricia Lou Miller on September 21, 1974, in Grand Haven. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2020, after 46 years of marriage.
John grew up in Grand Haven and graduated from Grand Haven High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard as a cook, which he loved. After his time in the service, he worked as a plant manager at Midwest Pipe Co. in Grand Haven, the site where Home Depot is currently located. John retired from Midwest and shortly after that, he began working for his brother at Snoek Inc. It was a family affair.
John was the epitome of a hardworking man, and he worked full-time while running a farm and beekeeping for many years; his honey was always in high demand. He was a man who people knew they could count on to give them his time, advice on farming, bees, and many other things. Those who really knew him knew he was one of a kind!
John raised many animals, including beef cattle, which he processed, and he was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting during deer season. One time, he even brought a donkey home in the back seat of his convertible. John continued to hay, process beef, and harvest honey until his 87th birthday. His goal was to hit the 90-year mark, but cancer took that from him.
John was an avid bowler for over 60 years, who even bowled one 300 game in his bowling career, which he was pretty proud of. He surrounded himself with many close friends: Mike McCaleb, Mike Ott, John "Johnny O" Olechnowicz, Chet Stolarz, Ron Klop, Paul Smeenge, Jody Ryder, and many more. Oh, the stories these men can tell about their time in the barn with Farmer John. Drinking his homemade wine, cutting up beef, and tossing a piece into the "frying pan" to cook up when all is done.
