Frederick Joseph Bartunek

April 4, 1944-March 19, 2026

Frederick "Fred" Bartunek, 81, of Grand Haven, Michigan, passed away on March 19, 2026.

Born on April 4, 1944, in Grand Haven to Frank and Josephine (Babcock) Bartunek, Fred was a lifelong West Michigander whose life reflected the virtues of quiet routine, practicality, and steadfast independence.

Fred graduated from Grand Haven High School and went on to work in manufacturing, including time with Harbor Industries. After a serious shoulder injury, he transitioned to disability, but he remained characteristically self-reliant and organized. Those who knew him remember a home kept for comfort and function: a favorite recliner, an exercise bike, and everything in its place.

Though private by nature, Fred enjoyed the simple satisfactions of everyday life. He took pride in a well-kept truck, kept birdseed on hand for the backyard visitors, and maintained a boat, suggesting peaceful hours on the water. He had a soft spot for dogs, especially a cherished collie remembered in small statues around his home.

Fred was a member, at one time, of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 925 in Grand Haven. He didn't seek the spotlight, preferring to keep to himself, a trait common in his extended family. Yet his careful planning spoke volumes about his consideration for others: Years ago, he made arrangements to ensure his final wishes would be simple and in order.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Josephine, and by his brother, Frankie, who passed the same year as their mother in 2005. He is remembered by extended family, including his first cousins once removed, Julie Mast and Steve Vander Ploeg, and by those who appreciated his steady, unassuming way.

In keeping with Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place with no formal services. Interment of ashes will be at Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven alongside his parents. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so in their own time and manner. Please visit clockfuneralhome.com to leave a memory or sign the online guestbook.

Ramon Gaytan Sr.

February 1948-March 12, 2026

Ramon Antonio Gaytan, 78, of Fennville — affectionately known to many as "Tony," "Ray," "Gate," "Jr.," "Tio I," and "El Rey" — passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family as the cherished patriarch of the Gaytan home.

A man of profound faith, iron discipline, and an enormous heart, Ramon's life was a testament to the power of steadfast love and hard work. A devoted member of Pan de Vida Church, Ramon's faith was the compass of his life. Throughout the years, he served as a deacon in several churches, viewing his role not just as a title but as a calling to serve. His service to the Lord was a partnership; alongside his beloved wife, Angelica, Ramon spent countless hours as a custodian, meticulously caring for the house of God. Together, they labored side-by-side to maintain the sanctuary, and it was one of their greatest joys to serve together in the church of their son, Jeremias. Whether he was serving as a deacon or quietly fixing a broken pew, Ramon led by example, showing his family what it meant to serve with a humble heart.

When he wasn't at church or with his family, Ramon could almost certainly be found at a local hardware store. A talented welder and handyman, he was never without a project and was constantly adding to his collection of tools. He found joy in fixing what was broken and helping others maintain their homes. On Sundays, however, his focus shifted to his favorite team; he was a lifelong and avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Ramon was a guiding light who led his family with integrity and protected them with fierce devotion. His legacy of service, his discipline, and his quiet strength will live on in the hearts of those he loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Angelica Victoria Gaytan; his children, Elias Gaytan, Jeremias (Maribel) Gaytan, Priscilla Gaytan, and Ramon Gaytan Jr.; and a large, loving family who will miss their patriarch dearly.

Ramon's legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Dominic (Gladis) Gaytan, Martin Gaytan, Angelina Gaytan, Jacob Gaytan, Evan Gaytan, Reyna Gaytan, Benjamin Gaytan, Carissa Gaytan, Jasmin (Josue) Gaytan Guillen, Jeremias Gaytan Jr., Jacqueline Gaytan, DaZani Gaytan, Aaron Gaytan, Romeo Gaytan, Amaya Gaytan, Jiovannii Alejo Gaytan, Isaiah Gaytan, Mercedes Gaytan, and Cattaleya Gaytan; as well as his three cherished great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his great-furbabies, who were his constant companions.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Guadalupe Gaytan; sisters, Claudia Ruiz and Olivia Rios; sons, Aaron Gaytan, Obed Gaytan, and Raymon Gaytan Sr.; and grandson, Raymon Gaytan Jr.

Funeral services are planned for noon Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Trinity Reformed Church, 712 Apple Ave., Holland. The Rev. Jeremias Gaytan and the Rev. Johnny Bonilla will lead the service. Burial will take place at Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland. Memorial contributions may be made to his wife, Angelica Gaytan, via this link: app.giftcrowd.com/app/join-occasion/-CypVCo0zGXiSI2z. Condolences may be left at langelandsterenberg.com.

David Jay Klaassen

July 21, 1941-March 17, 2026

David Jay Klaassen, age 84, a lifelong resident of Grand Haven, went home to be with his Lord and savior on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, with his wife by his side.

Dave was born on July 21, 1941, in Grand Haven to the late Peter and Jane "Nina" (Casemier) Klaassen.

Dave attended Grand Haven Christian School and graduated from Grand Haven High School in the Class of 1959, where he was active in both football and basketball. He went on to attend Muskegon Community College before continuing his education at the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science, where he met his wife while on a double date with his roommate, Doug Clark, who later became his brother-in-law. On September 20, 1963, he married Sandra Wierengo in Muskegon, beginning a devoted partnership that would span more than six decades.

Dave began his career as a licensed funeral director with Kammeraad Funeral Home in 1965, launching what would become a lifelong calling to care for families in their time of need. In 1968, he purchased the Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven and later added a Spring Lake location. In 1977, Van Zantwick, Bartels and Kammeraad Funeral Home was formed, where Dave served as a senior partner until 1992.

After a few short years of an ill-fated attempt at retirement, and after spending more seasons wintering in Florida than he wanted to, Dave, along with his sons Scott and Kurt, fulfilled one of Dave's greatest dreams by purchasing the former Klempel's Dairy Property and redeveloping the prominent corner into Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Dave firmly believed that serving families meant going beyond the funeral itself and developing lasting relationships with so many of his clients and their families. This was a mission he instilled deeply within the family business. He built his work on a foundation of trust, honesty, and a steadfast commitment to always "do the right thing."

Dave's faith was central to every aspect of his life. A lifelong member of Second Christian Reformed Church, he faithfully served as both a deacon and elder, and he often encouraged many to remain active in their church, faith and community. He and Sandy enjoyed traveling to third-world countries and islands on mission trips with International Aid to help spread the word of the Lord.

Dave believed in the dreams of Grand Haven and helped make them a reality by devoting his time, labor and support to make those dreams a reality, in such projects as the construction of the Boardwalk, saving the Cat Walk effort on the South Pier; lighting the Cat Walk and Bridging-The-Gap between the boardwalk and the south pier which became, Grand Haven: "Lake Michigan's Bright Spot". Dave proudly served as a City Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem from 1979 to 1987. Alongside his wife, Sandy, they donated the first home to Habitat for Humanity in Grand Haven, which was moved from Lafayette Street to Waverly Avenue in the late 1980s. The Salvation Army held a special place in Dave's heart, where he served on its advisory board for more than 45 years, including time as chairman.

A dedicated servant to the Tri-Cities area, Dave gave generously of his time and leadership to many organizations. He was a member and chaplain of the Grand Haven Area Jaycees, a charter secretary of the Grand Haven Lions Club, and a former member of the Ottawa County Board of Health. He also served as Past Vice President of the Tri-Cities Council of Ministries, President of Michigan Funeral Directors Association District #4, and president and board member of the North Ottawa Chamber of Commerce. His community involvement also included leadership roles with Tri-Cities United Way, Love, Inc., the North Ottawa Council on Aging, Kiwanis Club, International Aid, and the Charter Lions Club. In addition, he found great joy in coaching many local Little League football and baseball teams in his younger years and enjoyed making ice rinks out in the funeral parking lot so the kids could learn how ice skate and play hockey. He enjoyed golfing in his later years with the Wolverine's Senior Group, boating (once traveling from South Florida with friends all the way to Michigan on a boat keel), and spending Wednesday nights with his buddies in the Garden Club.

One of the organizations closest to Dave's heart was the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. He served as both chairman and former board president for several years and led the sesquicentennial committee from 1982 to 1985. His dedication to the U.S. Coast Guard and the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival for many decades led to Dave receiving the Coast Guard's highest civilian award, the "Medal of Honor."

Throughout his life, Dave was honored for his service to the community, including being named the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award Man of the Year in 1976, receiving the Grand Haven Eagles' Community Builder Award in 2015; being inducted into the Grand Haven High School Hall of Fame in 2019, and receiving the Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023; among many others.

While Dave dedicated much of his life to serving others, he also took great pride and enjoyment in maintaining beautifully landscaped yards with lots of flowers at his home and at the Funeral Home. Above all, Dave treasured time spent with his family. He was a constant presence at his children's and grandchildren's sporting events, concerts, and activities, always showing his unwavering support.

Dave's life reflected deep and abiding faith, and he now rests in the presence of his Lord and savior. While his absence will be deeply felt, his family finds comfort in knowing that his life was lived with purpose, love, and service to others. His example of faith, humility, and compassion will continue to guide all who were blessed to know him. He was generous with his time, talents, and treasures for anyone in need. He was known to be only a phone call away, and he meant it!

Dave is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sandy; children, Scott Klaassen (Jeri Ashcraft), Kurt (Jennifer) Klaassen, and Tammy Klaassen (Michael Byington); grandchildren, Ashley (Michael) Jankoski, Jordan Klaassen (fiancée, Sydney VanZee), Lauren Klaassen (Jake Kammeraad), Deacon Poole, Hanna (Andrew) Hulings, Molly Poole (fiancé, Morgan McGrew), and Lance Poole; great-grandson, Ezra Jankoski; brother, Dann (Sharon) Klaassen; sister-in-law, Georgia (Doug) Clark; brother-in-law, Jim (Jackie) Wierengo; one aunt; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Susan Morton.

The funeral service for Dave will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Second Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Tim Blackmon and Pastor Doug Bytwerk officiating. Visitations will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2026, and 4-6 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, both at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mulligan's Hollow Ski Bowl Capital Campaign Fund c/o the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation and Love in Action of the Tri-Cities.

James "Jim" Porenta

February 24, 1946-March 14, 2026

James “Jim” Porenta, age 80, of Grand Haven, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2026. He was born February 24, 1946, in Grand Haven to Joseph and Alice (Engle) Porenta. On April 24, 1982, he married Valerie Ernst, and together they built a life rooted in family, service, and community.

Jim was a graduate of Grand Haven High School and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Enterprise, a chapter of his life he held in deep respect and gratitude and one that shaped his enduring commitment to fellow veterans.

That commitment was most visible through his years of service at the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28, where Jim was not just a member but a steady presence and leader. He had the honor of serving as the Post’s 100th Commander, as Sergeant at Arms, and as a dedicated member of the Building and Grounds Committee, helping ensure the Legion remained a welcoming and well‑kept home for veterans. Jim could often be found helping with burger nights — doing whatever job needed doing, including collecting cash — or collecting holiday gifts for the Goodfellows, where his deep roots in Grand Haven meant he knew nearly every stop and story along the way. It was especially meaningful to him to serve with the American Legion Honor Guard, where he helped provide hundreds of veterans with a dignified and honorable final tribute.

In addition to the American Legion, Jim was also a longtime member and supporter of VFW Post 2326, where he valued the camaraderie, service, and shared commitment to honoring those who served.

Jim retired in 2008 from the family business, Porenta’s Grand Haven Furniture. Jim loved the Grand Haven community and gave back in numerous ways, most recently serving on the board of Park Place Community Center. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed riding his motorcycle, camping, fishing, learning about history, and caring for his dogs. Above all else, Jim loved his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Valerie; his son, Joseph (Shannon) Porenta; five grandchildren, Ryan, Corinne, Colin, Maureen, and Simon; sisters, Virginia (Mike) Nielsen and Judith Porenta; and brother‑in‑law, Mike (Jan) Ernst. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Alice Porenta.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will take place 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2026, at The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven. Interment will follow at Lake Forest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28 – Honor Guard. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services.

Tino will be remembered for his selflessness and his willingness to help anyone in need. Together, he and his wife opened their home to foster children through the Department of Health and Human Services foster care program, as well as to exchange students. Their home became a place of refuge not only for those formally placed in their care, but also for friends of their children who, at different seasons of life, needed a place to stay. All were welcomed and made part of the family.

Bede Aidan Roper Robertson

September 6, 1935-March 11, 2026

When the measure of a man is made at the end of his life, what stands out is his character. Did he live a life of integrity, of love toward others, of selflessness, and as a gentleman, treating people as he would want to be treated himself? It can be said without contradiction that Bede Robertson was just such a man, and his departure from this life to the arms of his savior, Jesus Christ, is a loss for all who knew him, while we rejoice at his memory.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Bede Aidan Roper Robertson, age 90, of Grand Haven, was called home to eternity in Heaven, where he is reunited with his wife, Judy, and other beloved members of his family and circle of friends.

He was born on September 6, 1935, in the village of Cotherstone, England, to the late Rev. George Richard and Emma (Hurst Roper) Robertson.

Bede grew up in the town of North Marston, not far from a World War II airfield, where young Bede watched countless aircraft training for battle. The family moved to Canada in 1945 when he was 12, and eventually settled in Livingston County, Michigan. He graduated from Howell High School and then went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, where he was stationed in Korea.

After his discharge from the service, Bede returned to Michigan, where he met the love of his life, Judy Perroud. Years later, when asked about the highlights of his life, no matter the subject he was asked about, Bede always turned the conversation to how much Judy meant to him and brought joy to his life. Marriage followed on December 6, 1958, and later, Bede and Judy welcomed three beautiful daughters, Dawn, Lisa, and Gail to their family.

Bede and Judy created a warm and loving home in Fowlerville as Bede earned a reputation for excellence and professionalism as an electrical estimator for Glover Electric and Crampton Electric — a career he would hold for the rest of his working life. Their daughters were each married and brought grandchildren, and eventually, great-grandchildren, into Bede and Judy's lives.

A move to Grand Haven meant a large home near the lake and boundless opportunities for family get-togethers and summers with Judy making sure the kids always had something fun to do. When Judy faced a chronic health situation in her later years, Bede showed uncommon and commendable love and care for his bride. There was no sacrifice too large, no task too difficult if it meant caring for and helping her. It was a perfect example of selflessness and unconditional love. On March 13, 2017, Judy went home to her Lord Jesus. Bede bravely faced life without her but never lost his peaceable nature nor his ability to make friends and show love to others.

Bede will always be remembered for his warm smile, his gentle demeanor, and his readiness to laugh. He loved Michigan State sports, a friendly game of golf when the score was an afterthought and mulligans were plentiful, and he definitely had a sweet tooth. Bede never turned down some ice cream, and if a slice of pie happened to be around, he wouldn't say no to that either. He was a character in the best sense of the word, a decent, loving man, the type of whom you rarely encounter. He will be missed.

Bede is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Steve) Varcoe of Louisville, Kentucky, and their son, Michael (Joanna) of Mt. Washington, Kentucky; daughter, Lisa (Scott) Lockwood of Saranac, Michigan, and their children, Greg of Tucson, Arizona, and Tera (Jamie) of Clinton, N.Y.; daughter, Gail (Doug) Nick of Gilbert, Arizona, and their children, Abby (Mike) of Gilbert, AZ, and Chandler (Kellie) of Mesa, Arizona. He deeply enjoyed the blessing of six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren who also survive him.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 67 years, Judith Perroud Robertson, and his precious granddaughter, Courtney Macheile Varcoe.

Bede was a good man; one of the best. Anyone would do well to be the kind of person Bede was. He will rest in peace in the presence of his savior, Jesus.

The celebration of life for Bede will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Grand Haven Community Baptist Church, time to be announced. Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Haven Community Baptist Church.
