M. Arley Bouwma
October 25, 1947-October 29, 2026
Mr. M. Arley Bouwma of Ferrysburg passed away on October 29, 2026, at home, lovingly cared for by his family.
He was born October 25, 1947, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Martin and Alice (Brock) Bouwma. On June 12, 1970, he married Joan (Jo) Van Gilst in Leighton, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jo; his children, Andrew (Jana) Bouwma-Gearhart, Peter (Denise Akob), and Laura (Andrew) Vanden Heuvel; his grandchildren, Sol Bouwma-Gearhart, Gabriele Bouwma, Leo, Penny, and Louisa Vanden Heuvel; sister, Susan (Philip) Grefe and Roger Bouwma. He is also survived by Jo’s siblings and their spouses and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Mary Bouwma.
Arley and Jo met as camp counselors at Camp Roger in the summer of 1968 and shared several years in camp leadership positions both at Camp Roger and Camp Tall Turf after their marriage. Camp was a place where Arley could combine his love for nature and working with young people.
Arley always wanted to be a biology teacher, and after graduating from Calvin College, he was hired at Western Michigan Christian High School and spent the next 40 years teaching biology and environmental science. After receiving his master’s degree in guidance and counseling, he also served as the guidance counselor. Coaching cross country and track was another way for him to connect with and mentor students, to become better athletes and grow as individuals. He played many roles at the school over the years, including athletic director, National Honor Society sponsor, bus driver, and anything else that needed to be done.
Arley and Jo joined First Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven in 1970 after their marriage. Arley thoroughly enjoyed weekly worship and connecting with his church family over coffee and cookies. He served as an elder and deacon and was always ready to volunteer for church ministries. The Recycle ministry was especially close to his heart.
Upon retirement from teaching, Arley sought out ways to volunteer in the community. He spent time at Love In Action, serving as a client advisor and driving people to medical appointments. As the local senior center, Four Pointes, also needed drivers, he spent several years driving seniors to medical appointments.
Arley perceived God the creator in the wonder and mystery of the world around him and spent his life trying to inspire curiosity about that world in others — his students, his children, and grandchildren. Family camping trips always involved visiting national parks to experience the wonder of the natural world. Arley was happiest being outside and spending time with his family.
Arley was devoted to his three children and five grandchildren, supporting them in their varied musical and sporting interests and attending every event that he could. This dedication to family continued even when his disability due to multiple sclerosis made it difficult. If his kids or grandkids were involved in something, he wanted to be there. Arley fought his disability to the last, always maintaining a positive outlook. Anytime anyone asked him how he was doing, he would reply, “Great."
A memorial service for Arley will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2026, at First Grand Haven Christian Reformed Church, 516 S. Ferry St., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2026, at The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417.
Memorial contributions in memory of Arley may be given to Western Michigan Christian High School. Interment will take place in Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services.

Dianna Lee Harrington
September 26, 1948-October 29, 2026
Guided by faith, Dianna Lee (Lengkeek) Harrington, 78, of Holland, Michigan, walked into the light of heaven on October 29, 2026, leaving a world made brighter by her love.
Known as Mom, Marmie, Grandma, Grams, Grammy and of course, Lady Di, Dianna was deeply loved by all who knew her throughout her full and beautiful life. Born in Volga, South Dakota, to Deane and Lorraine (Houtman) Lengkeek, she moved to Holland, Michigan, as a young child. She fondly remembered returning to the family farm each year to visit her grandparents, especially her grandpa Hessel, whom she adored.
After graduating from West Ottawa High School, Dianna pursued teaching at Grand Valley State College. She loved telling the story of meeting a very tan, handsome veteran at the grocery store back home — Stanley. Well, she thought that was his name, but Stuart didn’t mind. Their whirlwind romance blossomed into a lifelong love, and Dianna and Stuart Harrington married on June 14, 1969.
Dianna and Stuart were devoted to each other and their family. They built a loving home where they raised their four daughters: Heather, Heidi, Laura and Jessica. An artist at heart, Dianna treated her home as one of her many canvases. She loved gardening; her many beds evolved over the years with inspiration from books and magazines. She especially treasured a patch of her grandpa’s rhubarb and delighted in sharing the tasty summer treat with a bowl of sugar and her grandchildren.
Dianna loved the fiber arts and was a gifted knitter, weaver, quilter and seamstress.
She sewed Dutch costumes for all four daughters and, years later, for her granddaughters. She blessed her family with hand-knit socks, sweaters, and shawls.
She wove rugs and tapestries. Each Christmas, she and Stuart worked together on special handmade gifts. Among the most treasured are her knitted birds, one for every child and grandchild, each as colorful and unique as the birds that visited her feeders.
Genealogy was one of Dianna’s special gifts. She spoke of ancestors long since passed as if they were family, because they were. She traced lineages, pieced together family histories, and generously shared her discoveries. As a librarian at Herrick District Library, she shared her love of books and learning. The library and the close friends she made there remained important to her long after retirement.
Dianna’s faith in the Lord was strong. She treasured her Bible study group and rarely missed a gathering, valuing both the friendships and the opportunity to deepen her understanding of the Word and its place in the world. She prayed faithfully for others, had a tender heart, gave generously, and reflected Christ’s love in the way she lived.
Dianna is survived by Stuart, her husband of 57 years; their four daughters, Heather Minnebo, Heidi Harrington, Laura Knott (Dan), and Jessica Gonyou (Ben); her sisters, Pat Overway (Dave) and Pam Hartman (Scott); her brother, Butch (Marcia); her sister-in-law, Kathy Lengkeek; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives in South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorraine and Deane Lengkeek, and her brother, Michael Lengkeek.
Dianna had eight grandchildren whom she adored, and who adored her: Anna (Tom), Jonathan (Annika), Lillian, Tyler, Joel, Faith (Jarret), Ryan (Krissa), and Sophia. Dianna was able to welcome her first great-grandchild, Robin, this spring, who brought smiles and joy into her final days.
Dianna is at peace in her eternal garden, where flowers always bloom, weeds never grow, and a hummingbird’s whispering wings remind us that love never ends; it simply takes flight.
Visitation will be noon-2 p.m. Saturday, October 31, at Dykstra Funeral Home – Mulder Chapel. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m.
Burial will take place at Graafschap Cemetery in Holland.

Harold Leroy Koorndyk
March 5, 1935-October 21, 2026
Harold L. Koorndyk, age 91, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, died peacefully on October 21, 2026.
Harold, more affectionately known as “H,” was born on March 5, 1935, at home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Harold and Johanna Koorndyk; he was the eldest of their four children. His strong work ethic began at an early age, first with a paper route, then working in a neighborhood dry-cleaning business. Later, his uncle introduced him to the world of insurance. He started selling State Farm Insurance in 1966, forging lasting relationships with customers over the next 33 years through his dedication to service. After retiring in October of 1999, he continued to be close friends with a few of his State Farm colleagues and their families, enjoying weekly breakfasts with his buddies well into their 80s.
After graduating from Ottawa Hills High School in 1952, Harold enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves at age 17, with special permission from his father. He reached the rank of sergeant and excelled as a sharpshooter. On September 17, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Jean. During their marriage, they enjoyed many activities together. They were both members of the Jaycees, volunteers at Frederik Meijer Gardens, and Harold was a member of Ambucs. For years, they enjoyed square dancing, playing cards with friends, and traveling to their favorite getaway, St. Maarten.
Harold also enjoyed playing tennis and golf with his friends and family. He coached baseball when his sons were younger and was always up for a game of driveway hoops or blooper ball in the backyard. He was also a self-taught chef, known for his tuna melts and anything that could be cooked on the grill. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Lions. If he wasn’t attending a game at the Big House, he could be heard shouting “Go Blue” most every Saturday afternoon in front of the family room television.
Harold and Jean were faithful members of East Congregational UCC for over 50 years, where they taught Sunday School and Harold was a deacon. “H” was a surrogate father to many of his children’s friends, always meeting them with a heartfelt “Hey, Hey!” He loved Elvis and could be seen dancing in the living room to "Blue Suede Shoes" or "I’m All Shook Up."
Harold is survived by his wife of 71 years; children, Cathy, Dan (Mary), Dave (Judi), Chris, and Jackie; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Kellie, Meghan, Nicole, Jackson, and Spencer; four great-grandchildren, Eleanora, Madelyn, Kacie, and Cecelia; sister, Sandy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mark Meurer
October 22, 1956-October 19, 2026
The world grew quieter on October 19, 2026, when Mark Jay Meurer, beloved husband, brother, father and friend, passed away at the age of 69, just three days short of his 70th birthday.
Born on October 22, 1956, in Zeeland, Michigan, to Bonnie (Zuverink) Meurer and Henry Meurer, Mark was a force of nature from that day forward. Early in Mark’s life, the Meurer family relocated from Zeeland to Holland, Michigan, the city he called home for most of his life before moving to Salmon, Idaho, in 2015.
Mark spent his formative years at the family home on Lake Macatawa, swimming, ice skating, and playing ice hockey with his friends. He always made sure to also clear sections of the frozen lake, creating figure eights and designs for his three younger sisters to skate on so they would not be left out of the fun. After graduating from West Ottawa High School in 1974, Mark enlisted in the United States Army as a 13E, a Field Artillery Fire Direction Specialist. His duties included deciphering, generating, and relaying target information to firing batteries. While stationed in Augsburg, Germany, Mark took advantage of his time abroad and toured as many countries as he could.
He loved telling stories about how he and his friends turned hitchhiking into a competition, placing bets on who could make it across France first. Following his honorable discharge in 1981 at the rank of Sergeant (E-5), Mark began working in municipal forestry in Holland, trimming trees away from power lines for the Holland Board of Public Works (BPW). He began working directly for the Holland BPW in 1982 and held many positions over the years. He first worked as a cleaner at the power plant, then spent many years in the water department repairing water-main breaks, before eventually transitioning to his long-sought-after position on an electric line crew. Mark retired from Holland BPW in 2013 after dedicating 31 years of service.
Mark was always an exceptional athlete and loved watching and playing nearly every sport. Basketball, volleyball, softball, and golf remained his long-lasting passions. He played in recreational basketball, volleyball, and softball leagues and participated in Gus Macker basketball tournaments throughout Michigan for many years. He approached every sport and game with talent, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor that made playing alongside him nothing short of unforgettable. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Mark was a dominant force on the basketball court — difficult to block, stop, or outjump. While playing shortstop in a softball game, he once dove for a line drive and caught it in midair for the out. After barrel-rolling and landing on his rear end, he still managed to throw the ball to first base for a second out. It was quite the spectacle, but with Mark, everything always was. Mark was also a loyal and devoted lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Pistons, as well as University of Michigan football, only missing a televised game under extreme circumstances. That competitiveness resonated throughout the Meurer family and was ultimately inherited by the subsequent generations.
At every family get-together, there were Euchre, Hearts, Spades, cornhole, ping-pong, Nintendo Wii bowling, croquet, badminton and Bingo tournaments, depending on the weather. By the age of 10, Mark’s children could all build, manage, and maintain various tournament brackets. Everyone sought the mystery Dollar Store grand prize purchased for the day’s festivities, and everyone wanted their name on the coveted Wii Bowling Pin for bragging rights. Competitions and tournaments aside, every family gathering was filled with immeasurable joy, loud and boisterous laughter, and a deep sense of closeness, belonging, love, and support.
Mark was also a natural artist in both drawing and writing, whether creating a simple sketch on a scrap of paper, composing an eloquent letter, or writing a note inside a birthday card. His notes and letters were always the highlight of the gifts he sent for special occasions.
Throughout his life, Mark was humble, handsome, charming, kind, and wonderfully funny. He kept everyone laughing and gave the best hugs. It was impossible not to love him. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie Meurer in 2010 and Henry Meurer in 2014, and his brother, Perry Meurer, in 1994.
He leaves behind a legacy of humor, love, and competition that will be carried on by his beloved wife of 10 years, Barbara; his four treasured daughters, Lane (Adam) Fall, Leigh (Bill) Hook, Andrea Meurer, and Gabriela Meurer; his nine cherished grandchildren, Addison, Juniper, Rene III, Jason, Markus, Sonny, Karma, Charlie, and Gabriel; his sisters, Rhonda (Greg) Baker, Beth Alford, and Pam (Dustin) Harris; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St., Holland, Michigan. The funeral service will be the following day, Friday, November 6, at 11 a.m. at the same location.

Allen Jay Riemersma
October 17, 1938-October 29, 2026
Allen J. Riemersma, of Zeeland, finished his race on the morning of Thursday, October 29, 2026, and heard the words he had spent a lifetime longing for: "Well done, good and faithful servant." He was 88.
Allen was born October 17, 1938, in Byron Center, to George and Julia Riemersma. As a young man, he enrolled at Grace Bible College in Grand Rapids, where he met a young woman named Ethel Adeline Crane. He married her on June 29, 1963, and for the next 63 years they walked through life side by side — raising a family, serving their church, and growing old together.
By trade, Allen was a pharmacist, and a good one. He owned and ran his own pharmacies in Huizenga Food Centers, where customers knew him by name and trusted him with their families' care. When the stores were sold, he carried that same care to Meijer Pharmacy, where he worked until he retired.
But if you asked Allen what was important to him, he would have told you about the Word of God. A faithful member of Parkside Bible Church for 83 years, Allen taught Sunday school and led Bible studies, opening Scripture week after week for anyone willing to listen. His Bible was well worn, his notes were many, and his door was always open to anyone with a question. Nothing brought him more joy than seeing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren come to know and love the Lord. That was his life's work.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, George and Julia, and his brother, Larry.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Ethel; his children, Cindi (Randy) Arendsen, Amy (Mike) Cooke, and Jay (Cara) Riemersma; 10 grandchildren, Kaiti (Nate) Oppenhuizen, Christian Arendsen, Kirby (Ricardo) Angulo, Kinsey (Aidan) Van Singel, Olivia (Caleb) Akins, Alex Cooke, Aaron (Hannah) Cooke, Sophia (Jake) Swyers, Trip Riemersma, and Nick Riemersma; 10 great-grandchildren, Cleo, Olly, Hattie, Jett, Leo, Skylar, Marcel, Elias, Samuel, Mabel; and his sister, Sharon Hoogendoorn.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Friday, November 13, at Parkside Bible Church, 14461 James St., Holland.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, at Parkside Bible Church, 14461 James St., Holland. Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Parkside Bible Church.
Arrangements are entrusted to Lakeshore Memorial Services. Memories and condolences may be shared at dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/holland-mi/allen-riemersma-13097626.

Sarah Unzicker
July 20, 1936-October 26, 2026
Sarah Unzicker, 90, of Holland, Michigan, died on October 26, 2026.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, the Reverend William Unzicker; their children and families: David Unzicker and Barbara Hettle, and their son Cyrus; Steven and Christina Unzicker, and their sons Dominic and Axl; and Melissa Unzicker and Mac Liu, and their daughters Nami and Kyra. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Born in Franklin, Indiana, Sarah graduated from Franklin College and the Methodist School of Nursing. She moved to Casper, Wyoming, where she worked as a nurse before attending missionary training in New Jersey in preparation for an assignment to India. It was there that she met Bill. They married and soon afterward moved to Japan, where they served as missionaries on the northern island of Hokkaido for 30 years. Through English classes, Bible studies, and social gatherings, Sarah quietly connected women from different walks of life, helping to build a community that might otherwise never have taken shape. She also served faithfully as church organist for many years and introduced countless Japanese friends and neighbors to the delights of Midwestern cakes, cookies, and pies.
Upon returning to Holland, Sarah resumed her nursing career, working at Resthaven Care Center until her retirement at age 75. She and Bill were faithful members of Third Reformed Church. Throughout her life, Sarah gave generously of her time and talents, volunteering for a wide variety of organizations, whether cooking for Community Kitchen or serving as a docent at the Holland Museum.
Sarah's generosity extended well beyond her professional and volunteer work. She was always ready to lend a listening ear, bake a batch of muffins, or simply help wherever she was needed. She loved playing games with family and friends at Freedom Village, and whether the game was bridge or Continental, she always brought joy and laughter to the table.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Third Reformed Church, 111 W. 13th St., Holland. A memorial service celebrating Sarah's life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2026, also at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mission Memorial.
