Gordon Clark Hayes
January 16, 1937-October 16, 2026
Gordon Hayes, age 89, went to be with his Lord and savior on Friday, October 16, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Clark Hayes; mother, Grace Gordon Hayes; son, Bill Poteete; brother-in-law, Keith Lawrence; nephew, Jahvar.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Jean Weddle-Hayes; children, Kathryn (Russell) Holden, Dana (Jeff) Nelson; Deborah (Jimmy) Nelson; grandchildren, Brad, Becky, Kristy, Marie, Eric, Ian, Anthony, Tricia, and Bethany; daughter-in-law, Gale Poteete; sister, Beverly Lawrence; brother, James (Venoice) Hayes; nephews and niece, Steve, Jeff, Scott, Terry, and Javette; and many other extended relatives and friends.
Gordon was a kind, gentle, and thoughtful man whose love and devotion to his family made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
When Gordon married Peggy Hayes, he became an instant husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. At 55, he suddenly found himself surrounded by grandchildren, and he embraced them with remarkable patience and good humor. He even let them rappel down from the loft in his living room! Gordon was willing to do just about anything with his family — except go to the zoo, which became a running family joke.
Gordon adored Peggy and devoted himself to making her happy. When she was feeling down, his favorite suggestion was, “Let’s go to Macy’s!” He loved shopping, but most of all, he loved seeing Peggy smile.
Gordon had a curious mind and enjoyed studying history, world events, and classical literature. He loved motorcycle trips with his good friend Charlie, eating chocolate, and enjoying a good meal — always properly, with a knife and fork!
He also had a tremendous love for animals, especially his dogs, who were among the most loved and well-cared-for pets on the planet. His daily walks with them were both a responsibility and a labor of love.
Perhaps Gordon’s most endearing quality was his unfailing kindness and courtesy. Even in his final days, he found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. A glass of orange juice, root beer, or ginger ale would bring an enthusiastic compliment about how delicious it was. He had a wonderful way of appreciating the little things.
Gordon made people feel special. He was a devoted husband, a patient and loving family man, and a genuinely good human being. He didn’t need grand gestures to show his love. He demonstrated it every day through kindness, generosity, patience, and devotion.
We were blessed to have Gordon in our lives. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever appreciated for the wonderful man he was.
Per Gordon's wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Humane Society of West Michigan in Gordon's honor. The family welcomes memories and messages at cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.

James "Jim" Lavern McDaniel
April 7, 1940-October 17, 2026
James "Jim" Lavern McDaniel, age 86, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Robbinswood Assisted Living.
Jim was born on April 7, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late James and Thelma (Guess) McDaniel.
Jim proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966. He served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and he earned a National Defense Service Ribbon during his time in the military. He served on the USS Bainbridge, the world's first nuclear destroyer, making three round-world trips while on board and receiving medals for each trip. After his years of service, he began and ended his career working for Steelcase as an automatic press operator, and in the last 10 years of service working for Steelcase, he traveled around the world doing set-ups.
Jim's pride and joy was his cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a special place he built with his own hands and where he could truly enjoy the things he loved most. An avid outdoorsman, Jim cherished his time hunting, fishing, camping, and simply being outside. The cabin became a place of peace, adventure, and countless memories—a reflection of Jim's love for the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. He truly loved sharing his special place with his children and grandchildren.
Jim also had a deep appreciation for the finer things. He loved fine dining, music, and dancing, and he took great pride in always looking his best. He was impeccably dressed and had a knack for wearing the best of everything. Yet, beyond his impeccable style, Jim's greatest treasures were the people in his life. The friendships he made were not casual — they were friendships for life. Once you were Jim's friend, you were family.
Nothing, however, compared to the love Jim had for his grandchildren and one beloved great-granddaughter. They held a very special place in his heart, and he made each of them feel uniquely loved by giving them their own special nickname: Justin was "Mouch," Joey was "Bald Eagle," Dena was "Gracie," and Bradley was "Walleye." These names, filled with Jim's personality and affection, will forever be a cherished part of the memories they carry with them. Jim's love for his grandchildren was unmistakable, and the bond he shared with each of them will live on for generations.
Jim is survived by his children, Dawn Marie (Jay) Bos and Kevin (Marcy) McDaniel; grandchildren, Justin (Michele) Rohloff, Joseph (Steph) Rohloff, Dena (Cameron) Boylan, and Bradley McDaniel; one great-granddaughter, Raevyn Kai Rohloff; siblings, Sharon Barrett, June McDaniel, and Don (Ruth) McDaniel; and several nieces and nephews.

Troy "Dan" Wassink
January 4, 1965-October 15, 2026
Troy Daniel "Dan" Wassink, age 61, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on October 15, 2026.
Dan lived with appendix cancer for many years, but it never kept him from fully embracing life. Up to his final days, he pursued work he loved, spent time with close friends and family, traveled to places he loved, and looked forward to his next adventure.
Dan was kind, helpful, humorous, and a bit mischievous-qualities that brought laughter to every gathering. He was inquisitive, loved gaining knowledge, and thoroughly enjoyed a good debate on nearly any topic. Dan also had a deep love for music, especially live music, and enjoyed attending concerts. For more than 30 years, he attended Summerfest in Milwaukee with friends, making it a favorite tradition where he could experience nearly every genre of music in one place.
Dan had a lifelong passion for technology, computers, and electronics, and he was a true trendsetter in that world. He was fortunate to make that passion his life's work and to share it with others: from his early days at VandenBerg Stereo, to overseeing IT at Shoreline Creations, to serving as an Apple Genius. In the final chapter of his career, Dan became an educator, helping thousands of people through his tutorials on Apple products and software. His members and online community will truly miss him.
For Dan, Beth was his person-his "Chik" — and he was, and will always remain, the love of her life. Their shared adventures began with their beach wedding in the Keys and continued through annual visits to Disney World, Dan's favorite place on earth; road trips; and recent journeys to New England in 2025 and the national parks of the West in spring 2026. They could almost always be found together, sharing the experiences and adventures they loved.
Dan's family was at the heart of his life. He loved them deeply and was deeply loved in return. As the family's memory keeper, he captured both small and significant moments in photos and videos that his family will always cherish and that future generations will enjoy.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Carl Wassink; stepmother, Ruth Wassink; stepfather, Robert Lanning; mother-in-law, Sharon Noteboom; and infant sister, Wendy Wassink.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Wassink; mother, Phyllis Ann Smith; brother, Nick and Jo Ann Wassink; sisters, Whitney and Ed Gasper, and Melissa and David Tatlock; brothers-in-law, Robert and Susan Noteboom, and William and Carolyn Noteboom; sister-in-law, Rebecca and Dennis Shelp; father-in-law, Richard Noteboom; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A celebration of life open house will be 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, with an honorary toast at 5 p.m. at the Moose Lodge 1116, 106 S. River Ave., Holland, MI 49423.
