Michael Oscar Anthes, age 77, of Grand Haven, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, October 24, 2025.
After courageously facing complications from Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Michael was called home to the Lord. He was born on February 11, 1948, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Oscar and Mary (Thomson) Anthes.
Michael married his college sweetheart, JoAnn Dostal, on November 8, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan. They built a life centered on faith, family, and service, raising their two children in Grand Haven and sharing nearly 56 wonderful years of marriage.

He started his professional career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, moving to executive roles at Howmet and The Challenge Machinery Company until he founded Anthes & Associates, where he worked for over 25 years as a business and financial consultant.
Michael was a man of great character, known for his integrity, wisdom, and unwavering kindness. People trusted him for many reasons, most of all his compassionate approach to life and others. Michael was a sailor at heart and enjoyed time on Lake Michigan on his own boats and others. He also cherished boating and spending time on Torch and Elk Lakes with family and friends.
Michael was well-known for keeping an immaculate yard, but found even greater joy in helping his neighbors with his Cub Cadet tractor.
Michael's faith guided every aspect of his life. He served as a longtime financial advisor to the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church, sat on the board of Clark Methodist Retirement Home, and was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes in Grand Haven, where he humbly filled roles ranging from Sunday School teacher to chair of the finance committee.

March 24, 1944-September 26, 2025
Mary Jo Morgan, age 81, of Grand Haven, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 26th, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born on March 24, 1944, in Bay City, Michigan, she was welcomed into the world by her parents, Joseph and Beulah La Mere. On January 23, 1965, Mary was united in marriage to Richard Morgan in Essexville, Michigan. Together, they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. He preceded her in death on February 1, 2025.
Mary devoted her life to raising her four children and caring for her family. She worked alongside her husband in building their homes over the years, contributing her creativity and skill through designing, staining, painting, and decorating. Her dedication helped create a warm and lasting foundation for the future.
Mary found joy in being near water, whether splashing with her family for countless hours in the backyard pool, relaxing on the beaches of Lake Michigan under the sun, or soaking in a quiet bath at the end of the day.
She also held a deep appreciation for flowers, tending to her yard with care; however, she truly appreciated it when friends and family would offer flowers as gifts, which she would display with pride for all to enjoy.
Above all, Mary's greatest passion was caring for others. She dedicated herself to ensuring that those around her were comfortable, supported, and loved. She cherished her lifelong friend, Robin Spegel, as well as her many hometown friends, who remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Mary had four beautiful children: Michael (Karin) Morgan, Anne Morgan, Steven (Marlo) Morgan, and Kevin Morgan; eight wonderful grandchildren: Kailey, Lauren, Jared, Justin, Jessica, Jeremy, Jason, Jordan; and two sisters, Ann (Larry) Van Tol and Lynne (Dale) Wilson.

Mary Isabelle (Prelesnik) Nelson
May 9, 1926-August 30, 2025
Mary Isabelle Nelson, age 99, a lifelong resident of Grand Haven, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, surrounded by family.
Mary's "Celebration of Life" began when she was born on May 9, 1926. The second daughter born to James "Jim" and Beatrice "Bea" (Nelthorp) Prelesnik of Grand Haven, Mary graduated from Grand Haven High School, Class of 1944.
Upon briefly relocating to Grand Rapids, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Cadet Corps, and the pattern was set; a powerful desire to be of service to others. After graduating from St. Mary's Nursing School, she returned to Grand Haven, having narrowly missed the chance to join in the war effort. As if determined to compensate, Mary embarked on a career of caring that included full-time work as a nurse at North Ottawa Community Hospital.
After the war, Mary married her high school sweetheart, George Nelson, and the couple had two children: Patrick and Vicky Lynn.
No one would confuse the Nelsons of Grand Haven with that other (television) Nelson family synonymous with the conformist 1950s. Unlike Ozzie and Harriet, these Nelsons wouldn't be caught lounging at home on weekends. They preferred life at their cottage on Harper Lake in Northern Michigan. An outdoor life, with plenty of fishing, hiking, water skiing, canoeing and four-wheeling in the warm weather months. Winter ushered in the family's favorite outdoor pastime, downhill skiing, at Big M and Crystal Mountain ski areas. Spring Breaks alternated between Anna Maria Island in Florida and Colorado's Winter Park Ski Resort. The Nelsons' characteristic spontaneity manifested itself one day when they were strolling the banks of the Grand River. Suddenly, a beautiful wooden Chris-Craft zoomed by. Boating sounded like a whole lotta fun, so they went home and purchased a wooden speedboat kit, which they proceeded to assemble in their garage.
To most neighborhood kids, winter fun in Grand Haven meant the Nelson's House on Leggatt Street. Always the center of activities, it boasted a sledding hill, snowball fight range, and large skating rink that Mary, George, and the kids would faithfully reconstruct each season, so their neighbors had somewhere to skate and play hockey.
Fast forward several decades. Even in retirement, Mary's days were equally filled with purposeful activity. After catching the morning news, she made sure the TV was shut off until evening. Her free time was spent under God's roof, not her own.
To the end of her days, Mary's favorite place to be was outdoors, hiking the woods and dunes with her little dog, Nikki, savoring lakes big and small, or in her garden improving on nature.
Mary remained in many ways, the skillful, empathetic nurse she had always been. Only now, she had an entire community for a patient — as a member of the Church of the Dunes in Grand Haven, a volunteer Hospice Nurse, and active participation in dozens of other local charities. Mary fostered her love of reading as a docent at Cheap Stacks at Grand Haven's Loutit Library, an institution she dearly loved.
Did we mention she was ageless? Shortly after her 97th birthday, Mary was looking in the mirror, marveling at the elderly face staring back at her. Asked, "but how old do you feel on the inside?" Mary thought for a moment and replied, "Oh, I'd say 20." At the time of her passing, she was indeed the youngest near-centenarian around. To the end, Mary was always up for an adventure. Now, her faith and her fearlessness have prepared her for the greatest adventure of all.
Surviving Mary is her son, Patrick Nelson of Wayland, Michigan; brothers, Jim and Ron (Gail) Prelesnik, all of Grand Haven; and grandsons, Erik Nelson of Grand Rapids, and Nathan (Heather) Farkas of Grand Haven (and their daughters, Katelyn and Alayna). Mary also leaves behind several nephews and nieces with whom she was very close and dearly loved.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George; her daughter, Vicki Lynn; sister-in-law, Isla Prelesnik; and her older sister, Lillian Mae, who passed away in 1931 at the age of six.
Everyone is invited to a true Celebration of Mary's Incredible Life, which will take place 2-6 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28 in Grand Haven. Please come and share your memories and stories with family and friends over hors d'oeuvres and libations. A private graveside service will be held at Lake Forest Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of the Dunes or Harbor Humane Society.

He continued his studies at Wayne State University, receiving his Master of Mathematics. Carl began his teaching career at Grosse Pointe Christian Day School, later dedicating 30 years to Hamtramck High School. He also taught at Wayne County Community College before retiring in 1995.
It was during his time teaching in Grosse Pointe that Carl met the love of his life, Mary Jane Jonker. They were married on December 28, 1962, and shared nearly 63 wonderful years together.

Carl's life was guided by two unwavering pillars: love for others and faith in Christ. He often closed his prayers with the words, “May the Dear Lord Jesus be in the center of our hearts and in the center of our minds.” This legacy of love and faith lives on in his family.

Linda Lee Skodack
February 22, 1945-October 13, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Linda Lee Skodack, who departed this life peacefully at home on October 13, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Muskegon, Michigan, to Charles and Margaret (Juhas) Dethloff, she graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1963. It was there she met the love of her life, Gary, by slipping him a note inviting him to a Halloween party — a sweet, bold gesture that sparked a love story lasting 65 wonderful years. Together, they built a life full of laughter, love, and countless treasured memories.
Those who knew her will remember her quiet strength and deep compassion. Linda lived a life rooted in nature, love, and family. Her passion for horses was lifelong — whether riding, caring for them, or simply watching them run; they brought her a sense of peace and purpose that never faded. She found similar joy with her hands in the soil, tending to her garden with patience and pride. Flowers, vegetables, herbs — whatever she grew; she nurtured with the same love she gave to the people around her.
But above all, Linda cherished being a grandmother. Her grandchildren were the heart of her world, and their laughter, stories, and hugs brought her immeasurable joy. Whether she was cheering them on from the sidelines, helping with school projects, or simply sharing quiet moments under the open sky, she had a special way of making each one feel deeply loved and uniquely cherished.
Linda's warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love leave an enduring legacy. She will be missed deeply by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She left this world more beautiful than she found it.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Gary; her three children, Tammy (Terence) McBride, Mark (Heidi) Skodack, and Jill (Kevin) Niles; and her five grandchildren, Michael, Katelyn, Laura, Keira, and Ava. She is also survived by her brother, Rick (Jan) Dethloff, as well as one niece and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2025, at The Spring Lake Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 213 E Savage St., Spring Lake, MI 49456, with a visitation one hour prior. Laura Straight
Oct 17, 1966-September 28, 2025
Laura Straight, age 58, of Spring Lake, went home to her Lord on September 28, 2025.
She was born on October 17, 1966, in Saginaw to William and Dace (Lusis) Diffin. On March 23, 1990, she married Tracy Straight in Grand Ledge, Michigan.
Laura cherished her Latvian heritage that she learned from her loving grandparents, Omam and Opap. From them, she learned about God and the traditions of faith that shaped her life. She proudly served her country as a Seaman in the United States Coast Guard, stationed in Seattle, where she carried the same spirit of service that would define her throughout life.
Laura’s greatest joy and purpose came from being a wife, a mother, and an Omie (grandmother). She deeply treasured time spent with her husband, her two sons and their families, and especially with her granddaughters. She often said that when her children and grandchildren were visiting, “it was heaven on earth” — those moments brought life and beauty to even her hardest days. Laura loved music and sang about everything. Gardening, animals, cooking — these were not mere hobbies, but expressions of her love. Cooking, in particular, was her way of caring for others. Feeding someone was an act of love and connection in her eyes.
Her faith in God was the anchor of her life. Even as she faced cancer, she trusted Him — believing He had a purpose for her extending days. Serving in the care ministry at her church was a calling she embraced; she considered it an honor to minister to others. In many ways, her illness drew her closer to Christ, deepening her walk with Him.
Laura is survived by her loving husband, Tracy; two sons: Jordan (fiancée, Adriane Benoit) Straight; Owen (Brittney) Straight; her granddaughters, Charlie, and Hadley; father, William Diffin; siblings; sister, Terri Pollack; brother, William Diffin Jr.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Dace. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. October 8, 2025, at All Shores Wesleyan Church. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at sytsemafh.com.
