Ottawa County honors off-duty public defender staffer for helping distressed resident

WEST OLIVE — For Ottawa County Public Defender’s Office staff member Chris Langholz, going the extra mile for the community isn’t just a job requirement — it’s something he does even when he’s off the clock.
The county recently honored Langholz with its Customer Service Award after he stepped up to help a distressed resident on his day off, exemplifying the municipality’s commitment to public service.
The incident occurred on April 2, when an elderly resident walked into the lobby of the Ottawa County Administration Building seeking guidance regarding a family member’s upcoming court proceedings. Confused and searching for details about local jail and court operations, the man was visibly concerned about what lay ahead.
Although Langholz was off duty at the time, he noticed the resident’s distress, introduced himself, and immediately offered assistance. He walked the man through the arraignment process, provided details on the assigned judge and courtroom location, and explained what to expect in the coming days.
County officials commended Langholz for responding with compassion and professionalism during what was a stressful moment for the family.
"What makes his actions especially meaningful is that Chris was not working that day," county officials noted in a statement. "Even while off duty, he recognized someone in need and took the time to help."

The recognition comes as part of Ottawa County’s Customer Service Initiative. Launched in 2012, the program aims to empower municipal employees to solve problems proactively and ensure residents feel respected and supported during their interactions with local government.
