Three injured in 2-car crash after power outage changes intersection signal to flashing red
A weather-related power outage early Saturday is believed to be a contributing factor in a two-vehicle crash in Georgetown Township.
GEORGETOWN TWP. — A weather-related power outage early Saturday is believed to be a contributing factor in a two-vehicle crash in Georgetown Township.
Ottawa County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a two-car rollover crash at about 5:45 a.m. March 14 at Chicago Drive and Cottonwood Drive.
Once on scene, deputies found an SUV rolled onto its side, and one occupant was pinned in.
Police said a power outage in the area made the traffic signal at the intersection flash red for both directions.
A 38-year-old woman from Allendale was southbound on Cottonwood Drive in a Chevrolet Traverse, and she came to a complete stop at the flashing red signal, authorities said. When the Traverse continued southbound through the intersection, it was struck by a Ford Flex driven by a 24-year-old Hudsonville man, who failed to stop for the flashing red signal.
In Michigan, drivers are required to make a complete stop if a traffic signal is flashing red or if it is not functioning.
All three occupants of the Traverse were transported by Life EMS to Butterworth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Georgetown Township Fire Department assisted on scene with patient care, extricating the passenger out of the Chevrolet Traverse, and with traffic control. The crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
