CHESTER TWP. — Law enforcement units remain on the scene of an active, critical standoff involving an armed and dangerous suspect following a domestic assault call late Tuesday afternoon.
While three individuals trapped inside the home have been safely evacuated, the suspect remains at large and is believed to be armed.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office has advised neighbors in the 4700 block of Sherman Street to shelter in place and urged the public to completely avoid the area.
The incident began at approximately 4:37 p.m. July 7 when sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence on Sherman Street following reports of a domestic assault.
As deputies responded, dispatchers received critical updates indicating that a male suspect at the scene was armed with a long gun and that at least one shot had been fired.
A volatile hostage situation quickly materialized inside the home. Initial reports stated that a pregnant woman and an 18-month-old infant were taking shelter inside.
Authorities later learned that a third adult female was also trapped in the residence and that the suspect might have been inside the home.
In response to the escalating threat, the OCSO Critical Response Team and crisis negotiators were dispatched to the scene. The operation quickly expanded into a multi-agency response, drawing in tactical resources and personnel from the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office, the Michigan State Police and area fire and emergency medical services.
Shortly after 6 p.m., tactical team members successfully established contact with the individuals trapped inside. In a rapid intervention, officers safely evacuated both women and the infant from the residence.
