MUSKEGON — The Actors Workshop of West Michigan, in partnership with Muskegon Pride, will present "Play It Straight," a new play about the repercussions of how a conservative school district policy affected a high school drama teacher and his students.

Mr. Ross urges his advanced drama students to embrace the chaos of creativity, to dig deep, and speak from the heart. He routinely admits his philosophy doesn’t exactly mesh with the administration’s idea of an orderly classroom, even on a good day. When a new conservative district policy comes along, personal morality and ethics clash. What if the student is 11 weeks from being 18? What if that student has been keeping some very personal information from their parent for a reason?

"Play It Straight" explores the human element that inevitably comes into play when parents, principals, teachers and students are pitted against one another as pawns on the political chessboard.

The cast includes local theater veterans and students/alumni from MCC and one student from the Poppen Programs at Muskegon High School in the student roles. AWWM founder Adam Bell is directing the production.

"Play It Straight" was written by three California playwrights: Richard Winters, Kerri Yund, and Gary Wright and was produced twice by theater companies in Sacramento last year.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. March 20-21 and March 27-28 at The Stage at the Corner, 280 West Muskegon Ave., Muskegon. Tickets are $18 for adults and $10 for students and can be purchased in advance at awwm.ludus.com or at the door. All opening night proceeds will be donated to Muskegon Pride.
