Calvary Schools of Holland kicked off the new academic year with a major reveal at its annual Back-to-School Celebration on Aug. 21, officially introducing the Great Horned Owl as the institution’s new mascot.
HOLLAND — Calvary Schools of Holland kicked off the new academic year with a major reveal at its annual Back-to-School Celebration on Aug. 21, officially introducing the Great Horned Owl as the institution’s new mascot.
The "Calvary Owl" was selected to reflect the school's regional roots and core values. Native to Michigan, the bird of prey was chosen as an embodiment of patience, wisdom, strength, and quiet conviction — traits school leaders aim to foster across their student body.
Beyond local ecology, administrators noted that the Great Horned Owl aligns naturally with the school's educational methodology. Calvary operates under the philosophy of 19th-century educator Charlotte Mason, emphasizing nature study, careful observation, and immersive learning through "living books."
"A living education invites students to pay attention, observe carefully, ask meaningful questions, and remain awake to the beauty and wonder of the world," the school shared in a statement detailing how the nocturnal hunter mirrors their academic ethos of deliberate, purposeful action.
The new mascot is set to be integrated across all campus operations, student life, and athletic programs starting this fall.
Founded in 1978, Calvary Schools of Holland serves junior kindergarten through 12th-grade students. As the sole affiliate of Ambleside Schools International in Michigan, the Christian institution maintains class sizes of 16 or fewer to deliver a faith-integrated, relationship-focused curriculum.
