Georgetown Township rolls out Touch-a-Truck in outreach event of public safety jobs

JENISON — Sirens and horns sounded in Jenison as local police, the fire department, mail delivery, towing services, construction companies and more showed off their various vehicles at the Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday, Sept. 6.
"The goal of the event is to get families, kids and parents, involved with understanding what types of equipment is used for different types of jobs in the township," Dan Mesman said.
Mesman is a firefighter with the Georgetown Township Fire Department, and was wearing his turnout gear — the protective coat, pants and helmet firefighters wear when combating structural fires.
He said he signs up for as many community events as he can.
"I love being out in the community to let them know we're here — we're here to help," Mesman said.
Georgetown residents Justin and Liz brought their two kids to the event. Justin said their kids love the events, and it gives them a chance to experience trucks that they're normally expected to stay away from.
For Liz and Justin, it was a chance to see the famous Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, a staple of their own childhoods.
"My kids have no idea what it is," Justin said.
