GRAND RAPIDS — High-energy disco beats and theatrical comedy are taking the stage in Grand Rapids this September as Circle Theatre at Aquinas College presents its production of "Sister Act."
Based on the hit 1992 film, the stage musical features an original score by eight-time Academy Award and Tony Award winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater.
The story follows disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, played by Cece D., whose life takes an unexpected turn after she witnesses a murder. Forced into witness protection, she finds refuge in the unlikeliest of hiding spots: a local convent.
Disguised as a nun, Deloris immediately clashes with the rigid Mother Superior, portrayed by Karen Ambs.
However, as Deloris uses her musical talents to breathe new life into the convent's choir, her rising notoriety threatens to blow her cover and bring dangerous pursuers straight to the church doors.
