Herrick District Library names Ron Suszek new library director

HOLLAND — Herrick District Library has named Hope College graduate and veteran library professional Ron Suszek as its new library director. Suszek returns to Holland following a distinguished 20-year career in public library service. 

Most recently, Suszek served as director of the Muskegon Area District Library for four years. Earlier in his career, he held several roles at the San Antonio Public Library in Texas after completing graduate studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. 

In his first weeks leading Herrick District Library, Suszek says he has been energized by the community’s strong connection to the library while recognizing opportunities to broaden its reach. 

“HDL is a great place to be because many people already utilize the library,” Suszek said. “At the same time, we have an opportunity to deepen our connections across the entire community, especially with those who may be underserved. Returning to Holland, I see that while the community has evolved, what makes it special has remained the same.” 

Suszek brings a strong commitment to early literacy and the role libraries play in lifelong learning. 

“The impact of early literacy on a person’s life is immeasurable,” he said.

“Libraries can be a consistent, trusted presence in that space. It’s important for us to champion literacy early and often.” He also emphasizes the importance of keeping libraries both relevant and inviting. 

“Libraries are not only essential; they are also fun places to be,” Suszek said. “While we may expand services and programs, we remain grounded in our core mission. That foundation will always guide our work.” 

Outside of his professional role, Suszek volunteers for a local cat rescue, enjoys cooking, and is both an avid cyclist and tennis player.
