HOLLAND — The City of Holland has been awarded a "Gold" seal of achievement by the Michigan Green Communities program, marking significant local progress in energy efficiency, climate resilience and environmental stewardship.

The recognition comes as part of the annual MGC Challenge, a statewide benchmarking initiative that evaluates municipal performance across categories such as renewable energy, recycling, environmental justice, and community engagement.

Holland secured its high-tier status through several successful local campaigns, including the Home Energy 101 initiative and the Holland Board of Public Works Rebate programs.

City officials also highlighted a recent pilot program utilizing artificial intelligence to better educate residents on proper recycling practices — a project that has since become a model for other Michigan municipalities.

"To be a Certified Gold Michigan Green Community is a high achievement," said Dan Broersma, sustainability manager for the city. "Achieving the gold status shows that all departments within the city, and its residents, find value in sustainability."

Other Ottawa County municipalities recognized by the Michigan Green Communities program include Ferrysburg (bronze) and Grand Haven (gold).

The MGC program, which offers free technical assistance and networking to all local governments in Michigan, uses its tiered system (bronze, silver, gold and platinum) to guide communities as they upgrade public infrastructure and adapt to climate challenges.

According to program organizers, the ultimate goal of the challenge is to foster long-term economic and environmental sustainability across the state while simultaneously improving the daily quality of life for residents.
