Holland Language Academy welcomes students back to school with block party energy

HOLLAND — Confetti cannons, a live DJ, and a cheering tunnel of educators transformed the first day of school into an energetic block party at Holland Language Academy last week.

Students returning to the two-way bilingual immersion school were met with balloon arches, music, and food trucks as staff lined up to high-five children entering the building — a high-energy welcome designed to reframe the start of the academic year as a festival of learning.

Redefining the first-day jitters

For veteran educators, the high-octane celebration stood out as an unprecedented twist on traditional back-to-school routines.

"I am beginning my 20th year of teaching, and I’ve truly never seen anything like it," said Kristin DeYoung, HLA resource room teacher.

"It honestly brought tears to my eyes to see our students being welcomed and celebrated in such an amazing way, and to see education uplifted as something fun, exciting, and cool that kids want to be part of."

The event was spearheaded by Principal Iliana Vasquez, who conceptualized the festivities to build immediate rapport with families and cultivate enthusiasm for the upcoming school year.

The celebration reflects the vibrant culture at Holland Language Academy, a dual-immersion school where students develop fluency in both English and Spanish through integrated academic instruction.

School leaders hope the joyful launch sets a positive, inclusive tone for the months ahead as staff work to foster bilingualism and community engagement across West Michigan.
