A trajinera makes history in parade, community celebration takes over Kollen Park

HOLLAND — This year, Latin Americans United for Progress marks a historic milestone at the Tulip Time Festival by participating for the first time with its own float in the parade: a trajinera, inspired by the iconic boats of Xochimilco in Mexico City.

Decorated in vibrant colors and flags from every Latin American country, the trajinera represents far more than cultural expression. It is a symbol of identity, resilience, and belonging for a community that is an essential part of Holland's present and future. The float was made possible through the generous donation of Landscape Design Services.

Today, more than 25% of Holland's residents are of Latin American heritage. LAUP's participation in one of the city's most iconic traditions reflects an important evolution — a community that honors its history while continuing to open space for all cultures to be seen, celebrated, and valued.

“This participation is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural richness that is already part of Holland and to keep building spaces where all families feel welcome, represented, and part of the celebration. It’s about community, pride, and belonging," said Alejandra Guillén, LAUP's executive director.

A Latin night at Kollen Park

On Saturday, May 9, LAUP invites the entire community to a free outdoor celebration at Kollen Park, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Activities include:

  • Mercadito and food trucks (5:30-10 p.m.): 16 local entrepreneurs and food trucks selected by Prospera, LAUP's small business center supporting Latino entrepreneurs with resources, training and growth opportunities.
  • Children's activities (5:30-8 p.m.): Free family fun for all ages in an inclusive, welcoming environment.
  • Live music with La Furia del Ritmo (7-11 p.m.): Cumbia, Latin rhythms and tropical sounds — made possible by entertainment sponsor MillerKnoll.

The night closes with a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m.
