Peggy was a stay-at-home mother and teacher for her two children, homeschooling them and playing the piano. She loved and took pride in her flower gardens and was especially proud of accomplishing her certification as a master gardener. Peggy was also a people-person who loved to meet new people; lifting them up and making them feel good about themselves. She especially loved traveling to visit family.

Anita Magdelena (Teekens) Bremmer
September 4, 1931-January 1, 2026
Anita M. Bremmer (Teekens), age 94, of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in Grand Haven, Michigan.
She was born on September 4, 1931, to the late Hendrik and Barbara (Hendriksen) Teekens in Gouda the Netherlands.
Anita was born into perilous times of economic depression and war. Her hard-working and resourceful parents made life not only possible, but good for her and seven siblings. Anita grew up during Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. She personally contributed to the Dutch resistance by smuggling identification papers for Jews under her dress. Following the war, Anita's boyfriend, Bart Bremmer presented a two-part proposal: "Marry me and immigrate to America with me." She said yes and yes! They were married on December 2, 1953.
Newly married Bart and Anita set sail across the North Atlantic on a French freighter called the Black Tomae in February of 1953. Upon landing in New York City, they proclaimed, "Wonderful America!" America was indeed wonderful for Bart and Anita, offering opportunities to both. Bart thrived in his career as a chemist, and Anita as a homemaker, mother and volunteer Christian educator. She served diligently for Midland Reformed Church and Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Congregational. Anita launched the first CROP walk in Midland, Michigan, in 1973.
Anita gave birth to and raised three children, who survive her: Jackie (Russ) Bloem, Randy (Tracy) Bremmer, and Jeff (Carol) Bremmer. Bart and Anita participated actively in the lives of their grandchildren: Michael (Sarah), Mathew (Kristie), Jordan (Megan), and Rachel (Christian) Bloem-Verwys; Daniel, Anna, Natalie, and Grace Bremmer. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Andrew, Joanna, Peter Bloem; and Simon, Archie, and Felix Bloem. Anita is also survived by her sister, Toni Van Luinen; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Bart, on April 21, 2018; her grandson, Nicholas Bremmer; and three siblings.
Anita practiced home-making vigorously with two mottos: "Tummies must be full" and "Everything must be clean." Anita's home was often filled with family and friends, and her tablewas filled with food, producing lively gatherings where both Dutch and English were spoken simultaneously.
Anita was a prolific artist, recreating the beauty of nature on canvas, glass, porcelain, and wood. She even turned a rock into a pretty convincing replica of a bunny. Anita enjoyed the company and creativity of her art class held weekly in her basement.
Anita and Bart kept friendships all over the U.S. and Europe, making personal visits on their many travels. They fulfilled their immigrant dreams of exploring the United States with a station wagon, tent, and later, an Apache camping trailer, but never on horseback, as Anita's western movie-inspired imagination had hoped for.
The foundation of Anita's wonderful life was always that she was not her own, but belonged body and soul to her faithful savior, Jesus Christ. While she was richly blessed in this life and enjoyed her homes in Grand Haven, Midland, Michigan, and Ashland, Massachusetts, she is now at home in the presence of her heavenly Father and many she loved in this life.
The funeral service for Anita will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2026, at First Reformed Church, Grand Haven. Visitation will take place 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, at Klaassen Funeral Home, Grand Haven. Interment will be at Midland Municipal Cemetery.

Kenneth Duane Dunlap
January 29, 1927-January 15, 2026
Kenneth Duane Dunlap, age 98, of Grand Haven, and former longtime resident of Jackson, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Duane was born on January 29, 1927, in Jackson, Michigan, to Glen A. and Mary (Jensen) Dunlap. Duane married Marie Anna (Puffpaff), his beloved wife of 73 years, on October 11, 1952, at Nevins Lake Church in Stanton, Michigan. Afterwards, the two moved into the home that Duane built in Jackson, where they lived together until 2019.
Duane was a proud World War II veteran. He bravely served his country on the Navy ship, USS Chowanoc, a vital fleet ocean tug used for salvage, towing, and logistical support during invasions in the Pacific. In 2015, as a thank you for his wartime service, he had the privilege of participating in an Honor Flight and VIP tour of the memorial sites in Washington, D.C., escorted by his daughter.
Duane’s work after the Navy was as a tool and die repairman until his retirement at the age of 52. Being inventive and self-taught, he had several hobbies, and his early retirement allowed him many years to enjoy them. He was passionate about antique cars, and his perfectionistic attitude resulted in the restoration of several antique cars from junk to mint condition, including his first, a 1924 Model T, affectionately called “Nelliebelle.”
Over the years, Duane and his wife traveled the US, from “coast to coast,” with their restored cars as members of the National Model A Ford Club of America (MAFCA) and MARC Sparton Horn Region of Michigan. They also enjoyed showing them at the Old Car Festival held annually at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. He especially enjoyed the times he drove his Model T around hilly Catalina Island and later around the racetrack at Michigan International Speedway.
Duane was also a talented woodworker, and he used his skill to restore antique furniture, which included many chairs, where he also masterfully weaved cane for the seats. He and Marie built a cabin in the woods near the Au Sable River in Mio, Michigan, where they liked to spend time relaxing with friends and family. Duane and Marie also enjoyed international travel, playing bridge, and gardening. For over thirty years, they split their time between Michigan and Florida, where they made new friends and enjoyed snow-free winters together.
When in Michigan, they were active participants and members of Sandstone Congregational Church. He was financially savvy and followed the stock market, dabbling in investing and stock trading. Duane was a man of integrity, a helpful friend and loving companion. He would chat with anyone and had kind words to say about everyone.
Duane leaves us with many wonderful memories. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Marie Dunlap; daughter, Jeanne Stoddard, and her partner, Tim Lovrencevic; two grandchildren, Cara Stoddard, and Ryan (Kristin) Stoddard; two great-grandchildren, Skya Stoddard and Stellan Stoddard; his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Dunlap; and several dear nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Rick Stoddard, and his brother, Gerald “Jerry” Dunlap.
An outdoor military service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 West Dickman Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sandstone Congregational Church (Jackson, Michigan). Arrangements entrusted to Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven. Please share your memories with the family by signing the online guest book at sytsemafh.com.

He was born on November 28, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Harvey and Mary (Sowerby) Heyer. Brian married Lorna Johnson on May 20, 1995, in Fennville, Michigan.
He leaves behind a legacy defined by his service to his country and his deep love for the quiet beauty of Michigan's woods and waters. A graduate of Spring Lake High School, Brian's journey of lifelong learning took him through Muskegon Community College, Northern Michigan University, and Central Michigan University.
Brian went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Air Force from 1987 to 1992, reaching the rank of Airman 1st Class. He worked for Holland Hospital and Spectrum Health before finishing his career in mechanical maintenance at U.S. Steel and Tyson Foods.
Brian's soul was most at home being outdoors. He cherished the time spent hunting with his son, Matt, and found a unique peace in "rock-hounding and polishing his findings." He was a regular on the shores of Lake Superior, where he spent hours searching for the glow of "Yooperlites." Closer to home, Brian could often be found with a line in the water at his favorite fishing spot: his mom's neighbor's dock along the Grand River. Jon Lueldon Schlukebir
September 5, 1942-December 28, 2025
Jon L. Schlukebir, age 83, of Spring Lake, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2025, and is now rejoicing with his Lord and Savior.
Jon was born on September 5, 1942, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to Russell and Doris (Blade) Schlukebir. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, stationed in Turkey and England, where he both respected and earned the respect of all those who served alongside him.
Following his military service, Jon worked at Brunswick in their air hockey, golf, and bowling divisions, contributing to a variety of projects. He later pursued a career in real estate with Clyde Hendrick Realtors. Known for his dedication, integrity, and friendly demeanor, Jon built lasting relationships and earned the trust of many throughout his career.
Jon enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping, but his greatest joy came from time spent with his family — especially watching his grandchildren grow and excel. He was famously resourceful and had a knack for fixing nearly anything. Family and friends often joked that if duct tape, zip ties, and silicone rubber couldn’t solve the problem, nothing could. His MacGyver-like skills were legendary, whether repairing a leaky faucet, silencing a squeaky door, or devising a clever solution when something simply needed fixing.
Jon also found peace in life’s quieter moments, feeding and watching birds, squirrels, and ducks while enjoying the serene views of Spring Lake from his childhood home.
Jon is survived by his children, Russell (Linda Havel) Schlukebir and Kelly (Josh) Lathwell; grandchildren, Ainsleigh Lathwell, Kylan Lathwell, and Louis Havel; sister, Laurel Wilson; brother, Glenn (Wendy) Schlukebir; sister-in-law, Diane Schlukebir; and many nieces and nephews whom he dearly cherished.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Doris Schlukebir; his brother, Joel Schlukebir; his brother-in-law, Stephen D. Wilson; and his great-nephew, Merrick L. Schlukebir.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Robbinswood Assisted Living in Grand Haven, Michigan, and to Trinity Health at Home Hospice for the compassionate and attentive care they provided Jon.
Following Jon’s wishes, there will not be a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Arrangements are entrusted to The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Guests are invited to sign the family’s online guestbook and share memories at sytsemafh.com.

Lynn Gay Smith
September 14, 1945-January 25, 2026
Lynn Gay Smith, age 80, of Spring Lake, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
She was born on September 14, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, the fifth of seven children born to Helen Irene (Radford) Smith and Bertram George Smith.
Shortly after she was born, the family moved briefly to Charlevoix and then to the greater Lansing area. The summer before she turned five, they bought a home on Lake Lansing, where access to water and water activities became a prevailing theme in her life.
Lynn began kindergarten in the Haslett school system, graduating in 1963. She was a friendly, vivacious young girl, full of energy and known for her bright smile and ready laughter. School friends from those years have remained friends her entire life.
Lynn received her BA in Elementary Education from Michigan State University in 1972 and shortly thereafter moved to the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area in Western Michigan. After a brief stint working for the Story & Clark piano factory, she became the director of an early childhood program in Grand Haven and began taking classes leading to her MA in Early Childhood Education from Grand Valley State University. She spent most of her working life as an Early Childhood Licensing Consultant for the State of Michigan, which, as the state consolidated licensing programs, later included work with adult care facilities.
Lynn retired in 2009 and soon became involved in numerous volunteer activities. With her usual enthusiasm, willingness to give her all to projects and people, and deep love for gardens and gardening, Lynn became an active member of the Tri-Cities Garden Club in 2009 and served in numerous roles. As always, she made lasting friends with other garden enthusiasts. Her other passion was for books. A "night owl" by inclination, and a voracious reader with a fondness for mysteries, Lynn could quite literally "consume" an entire book in one sitting, and several in a week.
Especially after the death of her parents, Lynn became not only a kind of home base for family but also its kin-keeper. Siblings, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and others always knew that she was there for them; that they had a home whenever — and for as long — as they needed or wanted it.
Lynn was "mother" to Tracy, "Grandma Lynn" to Evan, Emma, and Abby (and for others, who loved her and thought of her that way), "Auntie Lynnie" to most everyone else. She knew not only the names and ages of all her 17 nieces and nephews, but also stayed in touch with each of them over the years, providing them with a deep sense of connection. She also was the one who took on the formidable task of researching and maintaining the family's genealogical data, providing us all with knowledge of our family history and the roots we share.
Lynn is survived by her daughter, Tracy (Jeff) Bennett; grandchildren, Evan, Emma (JJ and Baby James), and Abby; siblings, Karen (Timothy) Benally, Larry (Mona) Smith, and Cynthia (Rod) Alspaugh; and nieces and nephews, Steve, Craig, and Kym; Janet and Gary; Jeff and Carol; Lisa; Mike, Dan, Laurie, Shilo and Scott; Bill, Mark and Amy.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents and by her siblings, David, Shirley, and Gordon.
Lynn did not want a funeral. A celebration of life is being planned for mid-May 2026; details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, please support the Tri-Cities Garden Club with donations by mailing to: Tri-Cities Garden Club c/o Robin Lyons, 12988 State Rd., Nunica, MI, 49448.
