PORT SHELDON TWP. — A massive cleanup effort caused extended traffic delays Friday after a semi-truck carrying 40,000 pounds of sand rolled over in an Ottawa County roundabout, local authorities said.

Deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Port Sheldon Street and 120th Avenue on Oct. 2.

An initial on-scene investigation revealed the loaded gravel truck was navigating the roundabout when its heavy cargo shifted, causing both the semi and its trailer to flip onto their side.

First responders from Olive Township Fire/Rescue were called to the scene to extricate the driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by emergency personnel to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Crews worked for an extended period to clear the spilled sand and right the overturned rig, forcing partial closures of both the roundabout and the surrounding intersection throughout the day.

The cause of the rollover remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
