4 flee scene after Zeeland Twp. crash leaves 1 in critical condition
A two-vehicle crash late Monday night led to a multi-agency manhunt after the occupants of a pickup truck fled the scene on foot, leaving a 23-year-old driver critically injured.
ZEELAND TWP. — A two-vehicle crash late Monday night led to a multi-agency manhunt after the occupants of a pickup truck fled the scene on foot, leaving a 23-year-old driver critically injured.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection of Byron Road and the eastbound I-196 exit ramp shortly after 10 p.m. on Sept. 14, following an automated iPhone crash notification.
According to preliminary findings by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, a Chevrolet Silverado towing a trailer was exiting I-196 and attempting to turn westbound onto Byron Road when it turned into the path of an eastbound Porsche. The resulting collision left the 23-year-old male driver of the Porsche with severe injuries. He was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Following the impact, the 22-year-old male driver of the Silverado and his three passengers — aged 36, 20, and 16 — abandoned their vehicle and fled the area on foot.
Deputies deployed drones alongside K-9 units from both the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Holland Police Department to track down the group. Authorities located and apprehended all four individuals shortly after.
The driver of the Silverado was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The three passengers were evaluated at the scene for minor injuries and released without requiring further medical attention.
Zeeland Township Fire, AMR Paramedics, and the Zeeland Police Department assisted at the scene. Byron Road was closed for roughly three hours while investigators documented the crash site and cleared debris.
The incident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
