Clear your cabinet: Community medication takeback returns

OTTAWA COUNTY — On Saturday, Oct. 24, Ottawa County residents will have an opportunity to clear out their medicine cabinets and safeguard their homes during a community-wide Medication Takeback event.
Organized by Ottawa County Community Mental Health alongside several regional partner agencies, the drive aims to address two critical safety concerns: curbing prescription drug misuse and preventing harmful chemicals from contaminating local water supplies.
From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., drive-up drop-off stations will operate simultaneously at two area hospitals:
- Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital, 8333 Felch St., Zeeland
- Holland Hospital, 602 Michigan Ave., Holland

The service is free, anonymous, and open to all community members. Organizers welcome a wide range of unused or expired items, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, controlled and non-controlled substances, pet medications, and vitamins. Sharps and needles are also accepted, provided they are safely sealed inside a puncture-proof container prior to arrival.
By providing a secure disposal option, officials hope to remove potential hazards from local households before they lead to accidental poisonings or drug diversion.
Residents with questions regarding accepted items or drive-through logistics can contact event coordinator Daniel Gardner by phone at 616-416-0860 or via email at dgardner@ottawacmh.org.
