Week 10
The Michigan high school football playoffs delivered another thrilling weekend of high stakes, major upsets, and explosive offenses, as local teams punched their tickets to the next round of the postseason.
The biggest shocker of the weekend belonged to Grandville. The Bulldogs pulled off a stunning upset to upend previously unbeaten Howell, keeping their playoff run alive. Grandville’s reward is a date with Portage Central in the next round.
Portage Central secured its own spot after surviving a hard-fought battle against Hudsonville, edging the Eagles 21-14 and bringing Hudsonville's otherwise stellar season to an abrupt end.
Meanwhile, Coopersville continued its impressive march through the postseason. Leaning on a balanced attack and stingy defense, the Broncos secured a 24-14 victory over East Grand Rapids. The win advances Coopersville to a highly anticipated matchup against perennial powerhouse DeWitt.
Zeeland West made the loudest statement of the weekend, unleashing a relentless offensive attack to rout Niles. The Dux hung 60 points on the board in a lopsided blowout, showcasing why they are a terrifying draw in November. Zeeland West now sets its sights on Battle Creek Central in the regional round.
For Unity Christian, the drive for redemption remains perfectly on track.
Following a heartbreaking, narrow loss in last year's state finals, the Crusaders took care of business by dispatching Spring Lake. Unity Christian will look to take another step toward Ford Field when they face off against Forest Hills Eastern in their next test.
While several local teams celebrated advancement, others saw their postseason journeys come to a close.
Saugatuck, which put together a remarkably strong regular season, ran into a buzzsaw against Springport. Springport's potent offense proved too much to handle, handing Saugatuck a 46-10 defeat to end the year.
As the field narrows, the surviving teams will spend the week preparing for a slate of regional matchups that promise to bring even more high-stakes drama under the Friday night lights.
