GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Valley State University officially broke ground on Tuesday, Oct. 27, on its new Blue Dot Innovation Lab, transitioning a multi-year collaborative vision into physical reality in downtown Grand Rapids.

Slated for completion in 2029, the facility represents a pivotal expansion of GVSU's overarching Blue Dot Ecosystem — a university-wide and community network designed to integrate digital literacy and emerging technologies across all professional disciplines.

The development combines a 58,000-square-foot addition with a 166,000-square-foot overhaul of the Eberhard Center, GVSU’s original downtown footprint. Once complete, the upgraded complex will also serve as the permanent home for the university's newly established College of Computing.

"This is an exciting milestone for a project that goes beyond a new space to the importance of connecting the people, ideas and emerging technologies that will help activate our vision for the Blue Dot Ecosystem," GVSU President Philomena V. Mantella said during a gathering of university administrators, faculty, students and regional leaders.

Designed to blend tech education with cross-disciplinary industry application, the facility will feature specialized research environments, including a dedicated cyber range and a driving simulator. Key public- and student-facing spaces will include:

  • The Technology Showcase: An interactive venue where students and community members can test drive emerging digital tools.
  • The Immersive Cube: A high-tech environment using virtual simulations and digital visualizations for advanced research and instruction.
  • The X>Studio: A collaborative incubator space focused on rapid prototyping and practical problem-solving.

Regional economic leaders view the investment as a driver for West Michigan's technology sector and talent pipeline.

“Companies evaluating where to locate or expand increasingly look for regions where universities, industry and talent development are aligned,” said Randy Thelen, president and CEO of regional economic development group The Right Place. “Blue Dot sends a strong signal that Greater Grand Rapids understands technology’s role as an enabler across all sectors — and is investing accordingly.”

Beyond technical majors, GVSU leaders emphasize that the ecosystem aims to instill practical digital fluency across every academic department, connecting faculty expertise directly with local businesses, K-12 school districts and nonprofit organizations.

"The integration of digital literacy across academic disciplines is crucial for all of our students," noted Laurence José, professor of writing and director of GVSU's digital studies program, calling the lab a central hub where cross-functional collaboration will come to life.

For students, hands-on exposure to next-generation tech is expected to provide an edge in an evolving job market.

"The Blue Dot Innovation Lab will provide students hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology to learn digital literacy skills that employers are looking for," said GVSU Student Senate President Lukas Hartley, adding that the initiative highlights "the future of Grand Valley as a whole."
