HOLLAND — Beyond the stacks of paper and print, the Herrick District Library is launching a new public awareness campaign designed to showcase the full, modern scope of what a library card provides.

The fall initiative, dubbed "Books and ________," plays on a fundamental idea: while literature remains the library’s bedrock, the services inside its walls have expanded far beyond traditional borrowing.

Residents across the Holland area will soon see the campaign across social media, inside library branches, and throughout the community. Featuring photographs of more than two dozen local figures — including staff, community leaders, partner organizations, and everyday patrons — the project captures the diverse ways neighbors use the facilities to connect, build, and learn.

"Books are the foundation of everything we do," said Sara DeVries, community relations manager for Herrick District Library. "At the same time, many people are surprised to learn just how much a library card can unlock. We hope this campaign encourages both longtime users and first-time visitors to discover something new."

A central element of the push is highlighting the library's "Library of Things," a curated collection of nontraditional items housed at both the Main Library and the North Branch. Patrons can check out high-end household and technical gear — including KitchenAid stand mixers, telescopes, Wi-Fi hotspots, GoPro cameras, Roku devices, and inspection cameras. The collection also extends to youth resources, offering programmable robots, Magna-Tiles, American Girl dolls and Tonie audio figures.

The campaign also highlights Groundworks, the library’s dedicated DIY maker space. Designed to give residents access to specialized manufacturing and creative tools, the facility houses a podcasting and recording studio, 3D printers, laser engravers, vinyl cutters, heat presses, large-format poster printers, and a full suite of sewing, embroidery, and serger machines.

Beyond physical items, campaign materials bring attention to educational outreach and local partnerships. Imagery highlights the library’s Makers-in-Residence program — which pairs professional artists and craftspeople with community members for hands-on workshops — as well as bilingual programming and ongoing work alongside area nonprofits, including the Community Action House, Kids' Food Basket, Outdoor Discovery Network, and Renew Therapeutic Riding.

Funding for the "Books and ________" initiative was provided through donations from the Friends of Herrick District Library. Community members interested in participating in future campaign pushes or learning more about available media, board games, and specialized equipment can visit herrickdl.org or stop by the main branch.
