Harbor Humane marks 70th anniversary of animal rescue with retro 'Ales for Tails' fundraiser

WEST OLIVE — Harbor Humane Society is throwing it back to 1956 to mark a major milestone: 70 years of serving West Michigan’s animals.
The shelter's flagship annual fundraiser, "Ales for Tails," returns Thursday, July 23, with a retro theme celebrating seven decades of animal advocacy and care.
The 12th annual event promises an evening of live music, local brews, food trucks, and auctions, with proceeds directly supporting the thousands of pets that pass through the shelter's doors each year.

What began as the Ottawa Shores Humane Society in 1956 has evolved into a vital community hub. Today, Harbor Humane takes in over 4,000 animals annually across Ottawa County — nearly 60 percent of them strays.
"This year feels extra special — we're celebrating our 12th year of Ales for Tails and Harbor Humane's 70th anniversary all in one night," said Marketing Director Jen Nuernberg. "We can't wait to celebrate our wins with the community, share what's been happening at the shelter, and have a blast doing it."

Radio personalities Rachel Gray and Rob Sparks from 105.3 HOT FM will host the event, which features live entertainment from popular local band Brena, a lineup of five food trucks, and a large silent auction.
Guests can also participate in wine, bourbon, and gift card raffles while sampling craft beverages from regional favorites like New Holland Brewing, Long Drink and Tito’s.
