LAUP to host free back-to-school bash, supply giveaway
Designed as both a resource fair and a family celebration, the evening will feature free ice cream, children's games, giveaways, and opportunities to connect with various regional support organizations.
HOLLAND — As the new academic year approaches, Latin Americans United for Progress is preparing to ease the transition for West Michigan families with a free Back to School Community Bash on Friday, Aug. 14.
The event, which will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. at LAUP’s headquarters, 512 S. Waverly Road, Ste. 100, will provide local students with free backpacks and essential school supplies, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Designed as both a resource fair and a family celebration, the evening will feature free ice cream, children's games, giveaways, and opportunities to connect with various regional support organizations.
"This event is about more than school supplies — it's about making sure every family feels supported and connected as they head into a new school year," said Alejandra Guillén, executive director of LAUP. "We're grateful to our partners for helping us bring free resources, fun, and community together in one place."

Adding to the back-to-school offerings, LAUP’s Pop-Up Shop will open earlier in the afternoon from 2-7 p.m., giving parents a chance to pick up gently used children's clothing at no cost. Attendees are encouraged to browse the shop prior to the main festivities.
The community drive is backed by several local sponsors, including Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU), Children’s Advocacy Center Holland, CarePortal, Sun Title, Community Action House, Boar’s Head, EnviroClean, and Doug and Ketzi Zylstra. Community members looking to contribute can also support LAUP's online Amazon Wish List to help purchase remaining classroom supplies ahead of the event.
