Police: Father killed wife, 6 children before setting Grand Haven Township home on fire
Authorities have officially ruled the July 24 deaths of eight family members inside a burning Grand Haven Township home as a murder-suicide, confirming that a father shot and killed his wife and six children before taking his own life and setting the residence on fire.
GRAND HAVEN TWP. — Authorities have officially ruled the July 24 deaths of eight family members inside a burning Grand Haven Township home as a murder-suicide, confirming that a father shot and killed his wife and six children before taking his own life and setting the residence on fire.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office released the updated findings following forensic autopsies conducted at Corewell Health-Blodgett Hospital.
The victims, cause of death
Investigators identified the deceased adults as married couple Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39.
The couple’s six children — four biological and two adopted — were also killed. Authorities are withholding the names of the children, who include four boys (ages 15, 12, 11, and 5) and two 11-year-old girls.
However, friends and family of the victims named them as Keegan, Bennett, Teddy, Smith, Caroline and Ella. The children ranged in age from 5 to 15.
Medical examiners determined that all eight victims died from gunshot wounds. The deaths of Amanda Karolkiewicz and the six children have been ruled homicides, while Kristopher Karolkiewicz’s death was ruled a suicide.
The family's pets also perished in the blaze from fire and smoke inhalation.

Incendiary evidence, ongoing investigation
Emergency responders originally discovered the victims on July 24 after arriving to suppress a fire at the family’s Riverside Trail residence.
While Michigan State Police arson investigators continue to review the official cause and origin of the fire, preliminary evidence indicates the blaze was intentionally set in multiple locations throughout the interior of the home shortly after the shootings took place.
Sheriff’s Office detectives emphasized that there are no outstanding suspects and the public is not in danger. Officials have scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. Monday, July 27, at the county offices in West Olive.
