FERRYSBURG — Northbound traffic on US-31 was restricted to a single lane Friday afternoon following a roadside incident involving a large vessel and a trailer failure near the Van Wagoner Road exit.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene at 4:19 p.m. Nov. 6, after receiving reports that a large boat had broken free from its towing vehicle.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found that a mechanical failure in the trailer caused the 31-foot boat to disconnect while in transit. The sudden detachment forced the towing vehicle and trailer to jackknife, sending the watercraft off the trailer, through the guardrail face, and into the roadside ditch.

Crews worked at the scene to manage the wreckage and clear the area. Northbound US-31 traffic was reduced to a single lane as authorities managed the cleanup and investigation.

No injuries or further details regarding potential blockages were immediately released. Motorists traveling through the area were advised to expect delays.
