Velo Kids, Park Twp. team up for annual Halloween ‘Wheelie Scary Ride,’ costume parade

PARK TWP. — Costumes, handlebars, and autumn trail rides are set to converge once again as Velo Kids and Park Township host the annual Wheelie Scary Ride on Saturday, Oct. 10.
Building on last year's turnout of more than 500 attendees, the free event will run from 4-6 p.m. at the Cooper VanWieren Trail. This year's festivities feature traditional favorites — including music, trail rides, food, and local activity zones — alongside a newly added costume parade.
Designed for cyclists of all ages and skill levels, the event encourages families to suit up in Halloween attire and hit the trails. To ensure accessibility for all participants, the Velo Kids Bike Library will offer complimentary bike and helmet loans for children who need gear.
"Wheelie Scary is one of those events that reminds us how much fun it can be when a whole community gets outside together," said Emily Bierma, Communications and Development Manager for Velo Kids. "You see little kids on balance bikes, older kids flying around the trails, parents riding alongside their kids, and everyone showing up in the most creative costumes."
The partnership between the non-profit organization and the township aims to foster youth activity, outdoor confidence, and healthy community engagement.
"We want kids to have the chance to be kids... to get outside, enjoy the awesome trails at Cooper VanWieren, ride with their friends, and have a whole lot of fun," said Ann Blizzard, Park Township Parks and Recreation Director. "Wheelie Scary is a pretty great excuse to do all of that in a Halloween costume."
