GRAND HAVEN — As Michigan wrestles with a persistent shortage of skilled labor, one local student is getting a financial boost to help bridge the gap.

The SET SEG Foundation announced that Grand Haven High School senior Brad Schmoekel has been awarded a $1,000 Skilled Trades Scholarship to pursue his education in welding.

Schmoekel is one of only 20 public school students statewide — and the sole recipient in the West Michigan region — selected for the honor this year.

The annual scholarship program aims to revitalize interest in vocational careers by easing the financial burden for students entering high-demand fields.

“The skilled trades are a critical part of Michigan’s economy,” said Molly Mellema, executive director of the SET SEG Foundation. “The foundation recognizes the importance, and we know that by investing in students entering the trades, we are making an impact on the state of Michigan and bolstering support and interest in these career paths.”

The funding comes at a critical time for the state's workforce, as industries face an urgent need for qualified trade professionals, from advanced manufacturing to infrastructure.

Founded as an employee benefits association, SET SEG has expanded into a comprehensive risk management organization. It currently provides member-owned property/casualty and workers’ compensation insurance to more than 550 public schools, intermediate school districts and community colleges across Michigan.

Operating as the philanthropic arm of the organization, the foundation funds grants, service initiatives, and scholarships designed to help public school students pursue advanced learning, leadership and civic enrichment opportunities.
