From lunch-break inspections to awards: How one sanitarian has redefined public service
Ottawa County has officially recognized Environmental Public Health Specialist Sam Bode for his outstanding dedication to public service, highlighting a commitment to community care that extends well beyond his standard job description.
GRAND HAVEN — Ottawa County has officially recognized Environmental Public Health Specialist Sam Bode for his outstanding dedication to public service, highlighting a commitment to community care that extends well beyond his standard job description.
The Department of Public Health inspector recently made headlines within the administration after sacrificing his own lunch break to cover a colleague's pre-inspection, a move that kept a local food service establishment’s opening schedule on track.
A proven track record of service
According to county client experience data, Bode’s proactive approach is par for the course. He received a 92% approval rating for his customer service skills and respondents consistently described him as knowledgeable, respectful and supportive — even during strict regulatory enforcement.
Bode's contributions also extend internally.
In addition to assisting his peers, he developed multilingual communication tools to better serve the county's diverse population, and he regularly pursues advanced training for complex assignments.
His dedication is already recognized across the state; last year, the Michigan Environmental Health Association named Bode its Sanitarian of the Year.
"Whether it’s writing laws, inspecting crime scenes, or inspecting just a kitchen like me, it’s all about service," Bode said. "It’s all about service to the public, so I think as long as you can always remember that, you’re going to be doing right by the people."

Fostering a culture of trust
Bode’s recognition comes as part of Ottawa County’s broader Customer Service Initiative. Launched in 2012, the program empowers county staff to actively solve problems, ensuring residents feel valued and respected during daily interactions.
By publicly celebrating employees who exceed expectations, county officials aim to reinforce a culture of excellence and strengthen public trust in local government.
