HOLLAND — Downtown Holland will host a free, family-friendly Día de los Muertos celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at The Holland Armory, located at 16 W. Ninth St.

Día de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday — celebrated primarily on Nov. 1 and 2 — where families welcome back the souls of deceased loved ones for a joyful, temporary reunion. Rather than a time of mourning or a spooky occasion, it is a celebration of life, family, and remembrance that treats death as a natural continuation of the life cycle.

The community event, organized in partnership with Downtown Holland, Latin Americans United for Progress, CultureWorks and Holland Museum, offers an afternoon of live music, traditional dance performances, local vendors, and cultural activities.

The main stage schedule showcases a lineup of local vocalists and dance troupes:

  • Noon: Singer Kenia Cruz
  • 12:25 p.m.: Monarcas Ballet Folklorico
  • 12:50 p.m.: Singer Hector Estupiñan
  • 1:15 p.m.: Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca
  • 1:40 p.m.: Danza Mictlan De Grand Rapids

In addition to live stage performances, the event will feature community-crafted school ofrendas, or "offerings," created by students from Holland West, Holland Heights, Jefferson, Hamilton High School, Holland Language Academy, and Black River.

An ofrenda is a temporary, decorated altar or collection of items created during Día de los Muertos to honor, welcome and nourish the returning spirits of deceased family members, friends or icons.

Attendees can also explore offerings from featured vendors — including Creaciones Martinez, Es Tóxica Creations, Isis Ropa Típica Oaxaca, Kookies, and Munay — alongside food served by the Tamales Mary food truck and live sets by DJ Mark B.

Interactive family programming includes face painting and hair braiding provided by LAUP, as well as hands-on art activities hosted by CultureWorks.
